I’m sure most of you noticed the distinct lack of ‘zing’ in the past few weeks updates, and might be feeling a bit disappointed, and fair enough, I’m sure not many were interested in the training mode update, and I know I myself was a little down at getting MetaKnight’s moves for a second time, but people are using these updates to complain. “Sakurai should stop this time wasting and show us another character!†or “Jeez Sakurai we saw that at E for All!â€

It’s things like this that bug me, for a number of reasons.

First of all, the updates. There is never going to be enough “omg†updates, and considering what HAS been announced (Subspace: a real single player, Online play, video saving, various newcomers) there just isn’t going to be as many.

<img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/modea02_070803logo.jpg" alt="Sounds so much better than other potential names such as Semi-space and The-space-that's-not-quite-space-but-is" />

Secondly, and this one mainly refers to one type of complaint, the “It was at E for All†issue. The thing is, the majority of people complaining about this, didn’t even go there. Why is that significant? Because those that went weren’t allowed to take photos or videos, but they did anyway, which we’re all glad they did. But Sakurai hadn’t planned on the covert actions of Smashers, so he already had all these updates ready to inform those that couldn’t go, not expecting to have been beaten to the punch.

This leads to my third issue. As mentioned in <a href="http://smashboards.com/blog/2007/10/16/a-glimpse-behind-the-dojo-doors-and-brawl-itself/ ">a previous Blog Entry </a>Sakurai has made all these updates a while in advance and sends them off in bulk, so the translator will get a months worth of updates to translate and release according to the schedule Sakurai has sent him. So us getting information about something before the blog updates on it? Not Sakurai’s fault, he wrote the update for it weeks ago.

<img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/technique06_071102c-l.jpg" alt="Blaming Sakurai for his efforts? That's cold." />

I do not doubt that some updates, well, kinda stink. I know I wasn’t that interested by Wide Screen support. But the fact is, regardless of wether an update sucks or not, it’s still a daily update. How many other games have provided about 6 months of daily updates and news about the game, not to mention the fact that each day we get about 4 or so Screenshots?

<img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/basic01_070522a-l.jpg" alt="And everyone was Smash Bros Brawling, danananana" />

After all this there’s still one last factor to mention, that if anything, shows how much we should really be grateful for Sakurai doing this, is the fact that Sakurai wasn’t even on the team when Brawl was announced. Sakurai had multiple offers before Brawl appeared, and the major reason he accepted was because he didn’t like the idea Nintendo had planned, of what would basically be Smash Bros Melee, but online. A sequel should be more than just the same but online, something Sakurai knew and set forth to show it. He very well could have said “Ugh, I’ll pass on that†but no, he’s not that kind of guy. He jumped in, was allowed to create his own studio full of hand picked employees, who he made sure were dedicated Smash Bros enthusiasts, and has set off to make the best Smash Bros game that ever Brawled.

Sakurai, keep up the good work. We all apreciate it, and are looking forward to the final product, no matter how long it takes.

So true. Sakurai is a freakin' Godsend. I would expand on this but I have little in the way of articulating what I think.

Yes, of course we should be thankful, and yes we're thankful for a non Melee 2.0!

Yet one thing concerns me. Do you think when Nintendo informed of Brawls delay to Sakurai and his team, do you think he had these updates changed in order to fit the time gap (as in, he could've had good and bad updates alternating, but instead had to save them for the New Year), or are all the updates just going as they would've been planned?

Just wondering on your opinions =/

I think a huge part of the "lack of punch" comes from the fact that we haven't had a new character (newcomer or veteran) for over a month and we haven't gotten a stage profiled for a couple weeks. Those ususally give some light to weeks.

Here here, well said Mic, hopefully now people will stop bashing Sakurai for update with new screen shots and new info/music, even if it's a "duh" update...
Who am I kidding, there will still be people bashing, but I hope their numbers will decrease.

I totaly agree man I am extremly grateful for all the updates he gives us. I cant wait for this game and with out the updates the wait would be so much harder. I will admit I do get dissapointed bout some updates but Im am still truly grateful for them. THere are somethings I want to see and hope for the next updates but if doesnt happen Im cool wit it. Im just really tired of whinners sayin like what a horrible update or hey show us a new character aswell. I just wish people would shut up and just be grateful cause trust with out these updates the wait for Brawl would be so much harder.

Yah mon! If you're expecting epic, all-new, and incredible updates every single weekday, then your expectations for this game are far too high.

You're awesomeness Mic.

I hope that in my short blog series people will see there is something good to be found in every update. People need to stop whining and get on the happy Brawl express. Thank you Sakurai!

I don't see why you would complain about the Smashbros.com in the first place. I'm much more interested in what the final product will be then I am in the order in which I get information. Getting more updates doesn't make me play it any sooner. And to be honest, I'd rather have Sakurai spend all his time on Smash instead of worrying about some impatient kids who are whining about what he's chosen to show them.

This is so true.
Sakurai is doing a service for us.
And some people are saying he sucks for crappy updates.
Lies!
Being patient and grateful is the key.
This thread is full of win. ^^b

THANK YOU! Finally, someone who gets it. I see people just about everywhere giving Sakurai flak for the less than desirable updates, but there's one important thing they keep forgetting: These updates are a privilege, not a right, and we shouldn't take them for granted.

Honestly, after having virtually no news after that first trailer for a whole year, I'll take whatever I can get.

I agree, but still...he should know that we'd know it, it's that simple. Why not double or triple update it=??? While that guy Nate Bihldorff puts like 5 week old stuff up, Sakurai should figure it out soon that we know a lot of this stuff. Thankfully, stuff like the Donkey Kong theme and Wario's Final Smash kept the site going good. I'm still confused as to why he doesn't double update old stuff, that still confonds me, seriously.

He's doing us a service, but how hard is it to reveal more stuff when he'll be lucky to reveal 80% of the items, roster, and whatnot=??? Seriously, we're bound to over 100 musical scores, and how hard would that be to add it to updates like Norfair, Ike's Final Smash, etc.=??? NOT VERY HARD!

Anyone with half a brain would know videos at E for All would be leaked (since the only security were those ditzy retarts who kill babies with their loud abnoxious voices), people who go to E for All would talk about everything on forums, stuff would be leaked, everything at E for All would be known, etc. would happen. Sakurai (or rather, the person in charge of the updates) SHOULD HAVE been prepared, and stacked more music updates on it, or something.

Brawl will almost indefinitely have 100+ musical scores (possibly over 150, look at that musician list, how many did Melee have=???)...how hard would it be to have a sample with some of this old news=??? The Fire Emblem theme would have made the update with Ike Final Smash update better. The Donkey Kong theme would have made that Smartbomb update worthwhile, etc. Music updates happening with old news would at least make it more exciting, for reals. In other words, Double Updates with old news=will more then make me happy. We've got like 18 old news to cover, so whoever is running the site as a whole should just clean em' quick, or attach other updates (especially music). Is that too much to ask for=???

That, is my only real complaint about the site. If Sakurai is going to suck away our lives with these weekday updates, a few more double updates wouldn't kill him, or rather the people who are updating the site (since I'm pretty sure someone else is doing the Japanese blog, and Sakurai is probably only doing the characters and other big announcements and whatnot).

But, I have a bigger complaint about Brawl. It isn't even about the site, and it's a problem that we've had since Melee, indefintely.

Japan is overrepped, and the smash series playable roster after SSB64 seems to be based off characters popular in Japan, plus a few random characters. In other words, if characters aren't popular in Japan, they aren't playable. *coughSamuraiGoroh* I think he fails to look at character's popularity outside of Japan.

Look at the stats: 3 Japan only characters (Marth, Roy, and Lucas), 1 Japan only stage (New Pork City), 1 Japan only item (that flower thing in Melee), 1 Japan only assist trophy (the Devil), several Japan-only trophies, from mutliple Japan-only sesries that we've never heard of before (in Melee)! NO WEST-ONLY Characters, items, stages, NPCs, ATs, or trophies...AT ALL! Ya, that's totally not biased. [sarcasm] O ya, and that is why both polls he did were Japan-only polls.

He once even tried to make 2 characters available in the Japan version. He's tried to pull this crap before, although I doubt he'll try to pull it again after SSB64 and Melee's worldwide popularity. The fact is, he's basically focusing on who and what is popular in Japan. Give me a Western-only AT, or give me death. If that were the case, I'd be dead!

Seriously, there should be no more Japan-only playable characters, ever, until we get a West-only playable character, or something. If Sakurai was smart, Wario or Diddy Kong would have been in Melee over Marth and Roy, in which Diddy Kong's 2 games had 4 times the sales of FE series at that point, and Wario's games had like 10 times, and they were gaming icons.

The fact is Diddy Kong and Wario were FAR more desired worldwide, in which Japan is only like 15% of sales, and one country. Most fans would rather have Wario or Diddy Kong over Marth or Roy, that is a FACT! Marth and Roy were nobodies before Melee on a global basis, while Wario and Diddy Kong were two of the biggest icons. If he was so fair with Melee, he should have originally tried to make characters only in the Western-version, like he did with the Japanese version. That would have been fair, and not COMPLETELY BIASED!

Once we see a West-only AT, character, stage or something, I'll stop complaing, but I doubt it will ever happen. Sakurai is overly wayyyy biased to Japan. Nothing against Japan, and no I'm not racist against Japan, I hate each and every one of you equally! :chuckle: I'm just sick of no West reppage, and literally TONS AND TONS AND TONS of JAPAN-ONLY REPPAGE!

Doesn't Nintendo, Koonami, or Sega have any reppage for characters, items, or something that has appeared in a game that isn't out or will be out in Japan=??? That is my biggest complaint about Brawl, seriously. Get it right with Brawl, and rep the world, and not just international or Japan-only. If you include one culture, you should include them all. Seriously, who doesn't want to see a Australia-only AT, after all=???

Those are my two complaints, and the later is the biggest one. I don't mind three Japan-only characters in Brawl, so long as we see a West-only AT, character, NPC, boss, or something. Give us something to rep. I want a North and South America only stage, a Australia-only AT, and a Europe only NPC and item, after all!

GREAT ENTRY MIC, and while I feel there is no need to flame Sakurai (well, I understand people when their favorite characters are cut, deconfirmed, and whatnot), but there is still MUCH that I feel should still be complaned about. Lack of international reppage through basically anything outside of Japan is one of these things. XD

I'm in total agreement with this speech.

It's completely senseless for people to flame Sakurai saying, "omg n0 nu cahractezr he doezn't kAre ab0T uS!" because if he didn't care, then he wouldn't be giving us any updates at all. It's like an orphan complaining that he's getting a bowl of porridge instead of a chef's soup.

Be thankful you're getting anything at all!

Japanese characters in a Japanese game? What's this world coming to!?

Seriously though, the USA might be the bigger market but Japan is still their home turf so to speak. So it makes perfect sense that the game is focused on characters from Japanese games. Nintendo is a Japanese company after all.

Besides, there was some western stuff in there, like the proximity mines from Goldeneye/Perfect Dark.

^ But what about Nintendo of America, Europe, Australia, and of course Antartica=??? I'm not saying there should be no Japanese characters, I'm saying we have ZERO Western-only Characters, Assist Trophies, NPCs, Bosses, and so on! ZERO! NADA! CERO! The proxy mine is a generic item...the only item that was really a western item were the two diffrent ray guns, and Perfect Dark and Goldeneye were both released in Japan. Heck, Goldeneye was released in Japan before anywhere else! XD Out of the 291 trophies, there had to be at least 20 Japan-only trophies, and 0 West-only trophies.

What I'm saying is not to dump the Japan-only, it is that the West needs some reppage, seriously. That is something we can all agree on. I understand naturally there are more Japanese characters and Nintendo is Japanese, and they SHOULD REP THEM MORE, but they've left the west almost completely in the cold in terms of what is repped. In other words, we need more West reppage. That is all; just give the West some reppage, and I am more than happy. :) Is that too hard to ask for=???

I definitely agree. Some updates may suck, its true, but there is really no point in bashing on them. All we can do is absorb as much as we can from it, and wait for the upcoming updates. As for the game itself, I do not care how long it takes as long as it is perfected cuz...
Super Smash Bros. Brawl will kick everyone's azz!

I guess I can understand people groaning a bit about the last few weeks, but yeah, don't take it out on Sakurai. Also, don't even take it out on the updates... just look at them, and than continue with your other daily activities. Just think to yourself, "hmm, well that's a nice little message from Sakurai, I guess I'll just have to wait a bit longer for more character updates."
