Okay, so I've been SSBM for a long time now, and I'm at a skill level between casual and "advanced noob." I can beat my casual friends easily, but I don't use any real advanced techs except for the occasional short hop. Only recently have I decided to get into the advanced techs. (Wavedash..l cancel..etc.) I have gottan wavedashing...after about 4 days of practice..down to where I can nail it nearly everytime. Sometimes I press R to early or X to late and it screws up. I have taken interest in waveshining as Fox...and have had bad results so far. I can't seem to get out of the shine fast enough to wavedash along with the enemy as they are sliding/falling.

Is learning these moves typically this frustrating/time consuming/seems like I won't get it?

How long does it usually take to get used to all these advanced tricks?

In your head.
Yes it gets very frustrating. One time when I was learning wavedashing, I was really angry that I threw my controller (hopefully it didn't break). Haha. Eventually I got it down by being consistent and not giving up. Oh yeah don't throw the controller. Pretty bad idea. Yes learning all these advanced techniques take a long time to incorporate in your game (you can't just do it, but use it.). So yeah just practice a lot but not like 5 hours straight, more like an hour and a half is good.

Hope I helped.

Sometimes when you fail really hard at something, you just have to keep failing and failing and you'll eventually not fail so hard.

I've been playing competitive melee for about 2 years now, I'd like to beleive i'm slightly above average.

You just have to focus, have a love for the game.

yeah...it gets frustrating, learning new things. For me it wasn't wding (I got that quickly), but rather SHFFLing through shields.

To get used to doing them takes as long as you make it :) it depends on the person. Getting used to doing them at proper times takes much longer.

And some people never get used to them being done to them <_<

and try and practice them for not a long time, but several times a day. Like 2-3 times of 10 or so minutes. Thats better than just doing it a half hour, because after the first 10 minutes of that 1/2 hour you are "in the groove." The point is to get into that groove immediately, so restarting after a long while will help get you there quicker

^^just my thought on it...seems to be true to me.

Hey, good sig.

Okay so I can't really give you an estimate on how much time you will need to learn all of the advanced tactics. It's different for everyone. In my opinion you should learn and understand what all the advanced techs are used for first, then apply them vs. your casual opponents. Then when you start getting the hang of it, test it out on better people, and remember...

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. Don't forget to look at my signature, it's a perfect example of what to do.

yeah i could pretty much go into any characters thread when someone has a question like this and say the same thing.

PRACTICE.

i cant tell you how many times i tried to waveshine and illusioned off the stage. hey, it still happens once in a blue moon. but then you eventually get it and its so satisfying.

keep at it
