. What does Shining Force do different from Fire Emblem? I want to try the franchise out some day
Shining Force allows you to switch equipment in battle(in the strategy rpg's. At least Shining Force 1, 2, the remake of 1, and Sword of Hajya). It also has extremely low stats overall where numbers directly matter. Similar to Paper Mario's stats, in a way. 1 Defense means you'll take 2 damage if they have 3 attack, for instance. It has a vast list of fairly unique enemies and classes. Every class is promotable, although it generally only puts it up to one more similar class. Knights are always Centaurs, and turn into Paladins.
There is no "weapon breaking" or how many times you can use it. Only Magic items can break if overused, but that's fixable. But most importantly, you can always revive a fallen member. This does not apply for many of the spin-offs, though. I haven't played the action rpg's enough to know that for sure, like Shining Force Neo. Shing Soul(1 and 2) are hack-and-slash games, and always fairly mediocre at best. They have a super low attack rate for your attacks... where as every enemy hits dead on. Except magic, which'll always hit, bar immunities. And the classes are more unique.
Also, for the strategy rpg's, it's common that your main character has amnesia. Besides that, your hero always has Egress(which stops the entire set of battles and brings you to the last town right before it. It's basically an escape for the entire battlefield).
