For me this also a bit of tough pick... Since there really isn't much game that influence my life.. I think

• Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (I know, I know... Don't laugh... but man this game made me love sports)

I'd be interested in seeing a Smash Bros fanfiction where the characters aren't out of character.

TBH, you'd expect a game as popular and varied as Smash to have a lot of interesting fanfictions, but it's mostly crappy romance between Melee characters and boring standard conversation between multiple characters.

I feel like there's a lot that could be done with Smash, but not much is, all things considered.
Sorry, I already beat you to the genderbending thing.

But did you do the Yuri part of the joke, no? Then I can have that.

Most Smash fanfictions I ended up reading had it set in the Smash Mansion, only a few ever diverged from that spot, and actually had the heroes doing a heroic wide safe the world like event.

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System.

Rarely in my life have I picked up games on a total whim without knowing what they are, but this was one of those times when I was a kid and damn that game was fun, challenging, and hilarious.

But it didn't sell very well and I think Ape Studios got bought out or something and the possibility of a sequel went down the drain.

Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. if we're talking about one-off things.

Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon if we're talking about entries in a franchise.

S.T.E.A.M. was a phenomenal game that bombed in Japan due to being "too American" and falsely accused of jingoism, and underperformed in the US due to strategy games not being as big here. Add in the clunkiness of the demo that was fixed in an update, and you have a masterpiece that deserved much better than what it got.

If they made it more Japanese, I think it would of been a hit.

Shadow Dragon gets too much flack for areas it doesn't really deserve to get flack in. The death gaidens are meant to be a compensation thing for Iron Man runs, not a reward for character deaths. The graphics aren't even that bad save for Medeus himself, and honestly I appreciated the darker atmosphere with the character portraits. No supports was a drawback, yeah, but the map conversations that did exist were great. Add in fun gameplay and great writing and it honestly ranks high on my list of Fire Emblem titles. Lots of the characters may be filler, but the ones they do go into are some of my favorites in the franchise.

I do like dark atmosphere in games, like Brawl. So I see your point. As long as they got good characters, a show / game is fine in that criteria.

I wouldn't know for sure as I don't go looking for Smash fics very often, but I wouldn't be surprised. Crossover shipping seems to be......fairly popular, in many fandoms. Smash no doubt sees a high amount of it because it's a crossover to begin with.

One needs to put thought and effort into the dialogue in general. It might not help that many characters in Smash are largely silent characters in their respective franchises, but just about all of them still have personalities that stand out enough. With all the different characters and the worlds they come from, there's plenty of room for interesting and fun interactions between the characters.

Talking about all this almost makes me want to just go ahead and try my hand at writing a fanfic right now, lol.

Super Circuit was my first Mario Kart game, and I love it! I remember being so happy when the DLC packs for Mario Kart 8 were first announced to have Cheese Land and Ribbon Road.
I remember being pretty ecstatic about it.

I think this game was mentioned earlier, but Billy Hatcher & The Giant Egg is an absolute treasure that didn't get the credit it deserved.

It's certainly a bit rough with its collision and platforming here and there (looking at you, Egg Rails and Giant Palace as a whole), especially in the late-game, but the game itself is just so clever, charming and unique. Beautiful locals, unique gameplay, adorable story and morals, it was an absolute joy to play and remains one of my favorite gamecube games. It's just a shame it's pretty much what solidified Sonic Team never branching out from just Sonic anymore.

Plus, one of the most jamming boss themes ever.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions comes to mind.

It's a very solid game overall and deserves a second chance on Switch.

Plus the soundtrack slaps.

Blizzard bought em. They were brought in to finish StarCraft: Ghost when Nihilistic dropped out.

I assume when Ghost got shelved the Swingin Ape staff got shuffled around to different Blizzardy parts.

I mean, there's kind of a reason Subspace doesn't have characters talk, even ones who are more than capable of speech.

Nailing the personalities and dialogue of so many different, diverse characters must be insanely hard. I mean, even without dialogue, a lot of characters in Subspace are really unexpressive and stoic. And that's an official Nintendo product.

I have a gut feeling a lot of people who wrote for Marth in Smash fanfics probably know next to nothing about his source material.

I mean, as a kid I thought Marth was just a prissy edge-lord knight or something. The language barrier didn't help that. Smash doesn't give much of an indication that he's actually a really kind, strong individual who cares immensely about his comrades.

you have fantastic tastes! I fully agree on this. An hd remake with online play could be amazing. It’s a shame he was cut last sonic racing game. Hopefully If this new racing game has swag characters than billy returns as he deserves it. A truly underrated gem that could use some love in modern day.

Yep:

A lot of the times it just seems like they make Marth a hyper-exaggerated version of his Awkward Zombie self. That version is already pretty far from canon (done for comedy of course) but people take that and take away the comedy and nuance, leaving a character who isn't even Parody!Marth, never mind Canon!Marth.

Any one that has a true-to-canon Marth is a breath of fresh air at this point.

Doing Adventure mode, got through it and all, made it to where I ended up fighting Luigi (he was one of the four I've yet to unlock at the time). Had a fight, then all of a sudden he looks at me on the screen like breaking the fourth wall. I asked him what is he doing, he said..."GAME OVER" then all of a sudden, Bob-Ombs were dropping down from the screen. Luigi grabs one of the Bobs and threw it at me while I was trying to dodge them. Hit me, KO, and then all of a sudden I woke up

I mained the hell out of Billy in All Stars Racing and Zero Gravity. I owe a lot to that game for opening my mind about a lot of other SEGA brands like NiGHTS, Samba De Amigo and Jet Set. It started my journey as a Sega fanboy.

I just hope the next Racing game doesn't just focus on Sonic characters. The racing games are kinda all we have for non-Sonic nostalgia these days, it'd be a shame to lose that.

RE: Fanfic: sometimes I write it when an idea comes to mind - typically for a crossover. Only managed to finish one - Basically it was a Fire Emblem Awakening in Kanto League plot where F!Morgan was the main protagonist and the other Awakening kids were Gym Leaders. It wasn't too bad in hindsight, although somewhat biased from my play through in Awakening. Though I'm not quite sure if I've still got the original document floating around in the depths of storage files.

I did plan another Crossover Fic with Touhou and Pokémon as well focusing on 2hu's favourite witch Marisa in a Pokémon League based off EoSD's Stages and a few elements from LoLK, but that kinda fell to the wayside with University getting more intense. It might be something I pick up again in a larger break time as opposed to the 2-week break that I'm on (read: already half-way through)

So I guess if I were to write fan-fictions again, maybe not a grand double-digit chapter saga - something small-scale and reasonable that I can throw together in some downtime. Could be a simple one-shot, could be something humorous, small-scale crossovers or trying to write out 'What-if' scenarios. Don't come to me for Fate fan-fics - They'll probably make Waver and Alexander the heroes of the saga while Ryuunosuke and Caster are subject to countless deaths for all eternity cause I hate them so much.

Wait, Americans got upset at a piece of fiction from a foreign country, that didn't dunk on them for once? You know since it portrayed all positive aspects of American cultural up to eleven. Seriously why would Americans be upset about a piece of fiction that didn't dunk on them for once.

Or do some Americans not realise they don't exactly have the best reaction abroad, I mean there's a reason the obnoxious American stereotype exists after all.
