My damn eraser turned heel; now for some reason it leaves thick black stains on the paper despite I make sure it is clean constantly.
At this point Im not sure if I should buy a new drawing block and pencils or save for a Wacom tablet.

Just erase on some scratch paper until the black marks stop appearing.

An eraser I have got dirty along the sides, but still works well, I'm still shookith at the thought of it betraying me.

Do you use a normal Eraser or a Kneaded Eraser (putty rubber)?

Because Kneaded Erasers eventually become saturated and can't erase anymore, even if you try to keep it clean.

I use a Staedtler Eraser Stick (one of these, though mine is an older model)

So you could potentially be missing a chest and never know.

Putty Rubbers are the kind that are mold-able and don't wear away.

I have occasionally had proper erasers leaving black smudges when I'm drawing; even though, like you, I make sure to keep it clean.

It's really irritating, especially if you're late in a drawing and the smudge ruins it.

I've never been able to work out what causes it.

Speaking of Putty Rubbers, I actually own one, though I don't particularly like using it because it seems to leave grease behind when I erase with it (which might be the quality of paper I'm using or something). Some people swear by them, though.
