Gonna be blunt here: I'd absolutely hate that choice and I'd question buying it.Here's a point of discussion.
How would you feel if the next Smash game was an entirely single-player/co-op centric experience, basically the opposite of Smash Wii U/3DS and to a lesser extent, Ultimate?
Like it brought back trophies and didn't have a traditional VS mode, but it did have all of the characters from Ultimate and it's DLC and a few new ones too?
And it would have a full on story mode and tons of platforming levels and other modes like an open Great Maze mode and so on?
I ask because I feel at this rate, the singleplayer is the one thing that seems to suffer more and more, the more the other aspects of the game improve. They just don't have time to do it with all of the other things they have going on. I'm not saying Ultimate's offerings look absolutely awful, but they do look rushed since they are all so similar, especially with people think Spirits and World of Light are the same mode.
I also think that Ultimate is beyond perfect when it comes to the multiplayer offerings and such. Potentially really laggy online aside (which is honestly out of the Smash team's control), there really isn't anything they can add, at least nothing that is substantially needed.
They could of course reboot the series and revamp old characters like Mario and Link, but that will inevitably cause salt. I'd be interested in a complete genre shift, like making it a 3D arena fighter like Dissidia, but those aren't near as popular as 2D fighters. Ultimately, those aren't scratching an itch many are asking for.
What they haven't been able to properly succeed in though, is actually utilising characters and representing them well, and getting a lot of character interactions in. Some characters always get shafted in that regard, especially when Sakurai bias kicks in. And of course the actual platforming and adventuring stuff always gets shafted. These are actually things people have been vocal about wanting from Smash. As it is, these characters are here together, but it rarely means anything as they don't get to interact.
So I think this would make sense after Ultimate. We likely aren't otherwise going to get a second Smash game on Switch, and the Switch is likely gonna have a longer than average lifespan. I think this would be justified for them to try. They don't even need Sakurai to do it either since they would be re-using the characters as they are in Ultimate.
I dunno. Just a thought.
No matter the quality of the singleplayer experience, it's limited and it could never hope to achieve the things a competitive game would.
It'd go against everything I love about Smash sans its roster.
Frankly, I care about the competitive nature of Smash above anything else, and the only thing I'd personally want is if the reboot focused on these aspects (keeping the gameplay also simple to understand) and the roster above random singleplayer gamemodes. Also a RANKED ONLINE.
The most I want in terms of character interactions is dialogue before and after a match ala DBFZ. Story taking a backseat to the gameplay.
