Damn was the action fantastic in that first part. Levi going up against all those Central MP soldiers was beautiful to watch. That bar scene was pretty good too. Bartender-kun's moment was just as funny as it was in the manga, and Levi going for that snipe attempt with the rifle was good stuff. Kenny was also a star throughout this first half. Glad the anime is still staying true to his character and how threatening he can be.
And Armin with that kill on that Central MP soldier that tried to hijack the carriage and almost killed Jean. Now THAT was badass! He had quite some nice development in this episode with that kill and how he reacted with getting sick shortly after the carriage got away with Eren and Historia (yep, they got kidnapped, and it happened a lot sooner here in the anime adaptation than it did in the manga). His dialogue about how him and his allies are now becoming criminals in the eyes of another was good stuff too.
Jean had some nice character development here too with his hesitation of killing that Central MP solider and his dialogue with Levi afterward where he talked about his thought process. However, the anime glossed over one major Jean scene before this whole Central MP attack happened where he doubted Levi, and without it, it made Jean's talk with Levi less impactful than it should be.
I wish they showed Levi and Dimo's talk where they agreed to work together; it was present in the manga, and it helped give Dimo some character spotlight before his demise. Still, Dimo does leave some nice words to his son Flegel, a character who I'm looking forward to seeing some development. Kenny coming in and killing Dimo though... yikes! Badass Kenny strikes again!
The anime also toned down the torture scene by not showing how Hange and Levi tortured Sannes (it's mostly told, but you can still hear Sannes's screams and see the torture utensils used). I can see why this was done since it got pretty dark. They did cut one of Hange's best lines during that scene though, but at least they make up for that with an earlier scene where Hange panics as she talks to Erwin and quickly grabs some water. Still, it was satisfying seeing Sannes getting tortured after learning that him and Ralph tortured Pastor Nick to death.
We also learned a few shocking reveals: that Levi and Kenny are related to Mikasa (as both of their last names are Ackerman), the Reiss family aren't nobles but the actual royalty within the walls, and Historia Reiss is the true heir to the throne. Adding to this, the reason Historia and Eren were kidnapped is because they plan on having Historia eat Eren to inherit his Titan power (the letter Hange got from Eren reveals Titan Shifters are born when a Titan eats another Titan Shifter). Now, how exactly does this plan to make Historia eat Eren as a Titan work? We'll find out.
With the way events have been re-arranged though, I'm kinda bummed that two Historia scenes were cut from the manga: the one scene where Levi forces her to become queen by choking her when she resists, and Dimo telling Historia to give Levi a punch to the stomach once she becomes queen (this particular Dimo scene happened before Eren and Historia were captured in the manga though; it makes sense why it was cut here, but I only hope they incorporate this bit into the anime still because it has a nice payoff toward the end of the arc). Thankfully, next episode is when we learn her backstory, and I'm really looking forward to it. I was also right that her flashback would kick in after they show Rod Reiss meeting Historia for the first time in a while. I'm guessing Eren will have a brief monologue at the beginning of next episode where he says something like, "So this is the Rod Reiss Historia was talking about," with a flashback to Historia telling Eren and everyone else her backstory.
The new ending was surprisingly nice. The visuals were interesting, and the music was nice too (Linked Horizon can make good ending themes too, see!). It's very Historia-focused, and from what they show of her from everything she's experienced from her early past to present, it was presented well in conveying the character.
It was a nice episode overall, but I gotta admit that as a manga reader, I kinda felt bummed by the absence of certain scenes that were important for characterizations of some characters. We're still 2 episodes in, so hopefully, they'll be incorporated in some way later in the arc. I am looking forward to next week's episode though: Historia and Erwin's backstories will finally be revealed, and there's a lot of neat stuff that comes out of both.
