Basically, one article mentions that some groups are looking to have the straws specifically for disabled people. The whole situation is more or less the disabled adcovacy guys vs the environmental guys(who seem to have the backing from businesses and the like.)
That doesn't make any sense. Here in the Netherlands, we incorporated a new law about people having to pay extra for plastic bags at stores, it encourages recycling to save money for the person, just do the same then

A lot of U.S. cities already have. You're vilifying behavior to reduce plastic use. Behavior which the US is actually lagging behind most other developed countries on, too.

Hmmh. Keep having a general idea for the starting point of a woomy-centric Smash fanfic but never quite sure where.
Her eyes went wide as saucers as she heard the sound of keys jingling outside of the old garden shed. She'd kind of been breaking in for the past week, but she never stole anything. Mostly she just needed a roof over her head and a comfortable enough place to sleep, and the metal sheet roofing and bags of potting soil had done a pretty good job of that. She'd obviously prefer an actual bed or even just a sleeping bag, of course, but the smell reminded her of Kelp Dome at least. Anything that reminded her of Turf War at least felt like home a little bit. Heck, she hadn't even picked the lock. The bottom of the door fit improperly, so it'd been a breeze to just slip right under it and get in that way. Maybe an improbable squeeze for the bony sort of person, but for her? Nah, that was just an invitation.

But that was then, with the assumption that she probably wasn't going to get caught. And this was now, when that assumption was clearly being proven wrong.
But that's me writing out inspiration that's fleeting. Disregarding whether or not I'll actually keep this writing, the mental elevator pitch is kind of "Woomy has been squatting in a storage area for a while, eventually gets caught in the act by someone who doesn't mean any harm but totally got more than they bargained for."

?

That's literally not the case, though it IS the case in parts of Europe. And frankly, they SHOULD be banned here. Single-use plastics like straws make up a significantly large portion of ocean trash. I say get rid of them.

My bad, was mistaken

I could have gone better about it but I was expressing my disbelief at it, the fact that I've been misinformed is now clearly, well, a fact.

Oddly the first thing that came to mind was Hello Neighbor. Don't know why, it's not the right mood at all.

Sounds like a potentially viable slice-of-life setup though.

Although what's Pit doing with a shed?

Wanted to run with an OC on that one, on the basis of the idea that OCs that aren't wish fulfillment or otherwise self-inserts (or just straight up bad concepts. . .) are kind of rare.

I feel like I wanna adjust it tonally so that there's a mild but noticeable horror twinge or and least tangible discomfort in-universe to it, if anything. Oftentimes when I think the concept over it's OC-perspective instead of squid perspective like this particular jot-down. Make Smash character introductions unsettling to the uninitiated, make mooks from more overpowered game universes thoroughly terrify characters from weaker ones. But still allow levity to breathe despite it because -my gosh- raw drama Smash fic has all the flavor of a rice cake. With no flavor powder.

I'm not saying I just looked at my Starbound fic and coughed uncomfortably but I'm not saying I didn't either.

Maybe Hello Neighbor wasn't as far off as I originally thought then. :awesome:

Interesting. And agreed on that last point.

If this idea keeps percolating, keep sharing. I want to see how it goes.

Third strikethrough for consistency's sake.

Morning, I have some things to respond to before I get back to my Ultra Moon playthrough.
I was born in 1749.

Unless I straight up borrow them from others, I prefer not to take risks and spend my money on unused games. They might be cheaper, but there could be something wrong with them.
Speaking strictly from a consumer perspective. I have no issues with selling games that I no longer want (I actually plan on selling all of my physical Wii U games except for Mario Maker... though I'm not sure if anyone would want to buy them since most of them are already available on the Switch).
Edit: Forgot to mention that this doesn't apply for older games.
I got a used copy of Pokemon Diamond for a very low price.

So she's making a strawman out of the US? Grasping at straws indeed. I'm sorry, I just wanted to be mildly annoying.

vaanrose vaanrose I'm reading Hero With A Thousand Faces.

I blame you.

Thank you and **** you respectively.

I've gone nearly-entirely digital, making the point moot. But I've picked up more than my fair share of used games recently for my PS4.

Overall I'd much rather go digital or wait for a sale to better support the developers - if I can do both, like a Steam sale, Humble Bundle, or the like, so much the better. But when I'm picking something physical up well past its release date (like almost all of my PS4 titles were) a used copy is absolutely on the table.

I prefer new copies most of the time if I'm going physical, nothing beats unwrapping a pristine case wrapped in that plastic wrap.

Most used games I see are only €5 cheaper than a new copy, if not more expensive than a new copy. So I don't see it as worth it as the boxes are often tatty or they lack covers or something. Or have fake covers like at CeX.

All of my own boxes have generally been kept in good condition, so if I buy a game, I like it to be that way.

I go digital on PC for the reasons red mentioned. Plus, on my computer, loading screens and such for most games are non-existent. For consoles, I'll go digital if there's a good deal but I generally prefer physical as most console games I buy are part of a franchise that I own other physical copies of.

And yeah I'd rather support the developer/publisher than the retailer. Especially for niche franchises, that used copy of a game in an unproven/niche franchise that you buy doesn't show up on the publisher's sales data, so if people only buy used copies of games, they aren't "speaking with their wallet" despite buying the game. A game could sell a million copies if with used sales taken into account, but since those sales ain't accounted for, it only sells like half of that, which the publisher might see as it being unsuccessful. And then you don't get a sequel or any spin-offs or anything.

Ok, I just saw straws are now banned in the US? I'm so confused right now, apparently it's to reduce plastic costs but by doing that you're forced to do 3 options, make new cups accessible for disabled people which use up more plastic, make new straws that are made from biological components that someone could be allergic for or go "Tough ****" to disabled people. I swear, the US looks like a comic book villain for 5 year olds
What do disabled people have to do with the Banning of plastic straws

Imagine you can't use your arms like a regular person, be it due to an accident or handicap. How do you drink something?
It's clear to me now that you looked over the whole reason why they're banning use plastic straws in the first place and Ill leave it at that

I dont mind used games one bit, in fact Im for them as long as the previous owner didnt go king kong on them.
I wanted to buy all the Layton games, used if I had too, But I was scared they migjt not work, minus the fact I didnt see absolutly any of them used for sale.

Actually, come to think of it, Gwen's example has a weakness.

Straw or not, having no arms makes you unable to hold anything to begin with. A straw ain't gonna change that.

Reusable bottle caps with a straw-like opening?

Prevents spilling, is reusable so there's less trash, already exists.
I have a hello kitty one of those. I love it...

but I lost it :sadsheep:

You don't need to hold a cup when a straw's in it though, and should there be an assistant, they can hold the cup in front of the disabled person's face. I see customers with assistants quite a bit

I tried looking this up as it's the first I've heard of it and it's just a bottlecap with a hole and a straw put in the hole? Am I missing something?
I admittedly worded my thing wrong.

I meant a sippy cup.

True, but again, sippy cup.

And don't people that can't use their arms have assistance? And ones with no arms can get prosthetic arms can't they so that wouldn't be a problem

True, but again, sippy cup.
A sippy cup can be fine but considering those are usually meant for babies it can be seen as rather humiliating. Though if that social stigma changes I'm all for it.

Caretaker, that's the word, thanks! But a caretaker grabbing a cup and putting it in someone's face means the person can't freely control their drinking, a straw or sippy cup lets them drink at their own pace

So I went digging on the straws thing.

The straws themselves are made of perfectly recyclable polypropylene. But they're small and thin, and can therefore slip into cracks and crevices and mechanical bits on the machines we use to recycle industrial amounts of polypropylene.

And the reason we can't be arsed to make machines that don't suck industrial amounts of **** is because we have such a **** track record on recycling in the first place. And when we do recycle polypropylene it ends up in **** like lumber. And it usually gets shipped overseas, which means we've got little incentive to recycle at home.

...so yeah. Yeah it's pretty much a ban at this point to fix straw waste, I guess. Not because it's a great plan, but because it's the only one we'll actually do.

As long as the used game is in good condition, I would buy it.

To make sure a used game is worth it, I normally take into consideration the scale that amazon.com uses; "like new, good, fair, acceptable, and poor." If a used game is good or like new, I buy for sure. If it's one of the lower two scores, I avoid. If it's rated at "fair", it depends on how strongly I desire the game in general since "fair" is right in the middle and the border between being worth it and not being worth it.
