Time for the briefest of brief summaries of Thomas Paine and why he's important.

Okay, so there came a point where the American colonies were getting really tired of the British monarchy. Paine writes Common Sense, which points out why the British rule over the colonies sucks ass. Ideas about universal human rights are discussed and this gets the colonists going. Paine galvanized them and made them realize that a revolt was needed. He's revered and respected by all as one of the US's Founding Fathers.

Then he goes off to France and helps with their revolution. Then he gets imprisoned for his writings. He's in jail for a long time until James Monroe busts him out after Washington did nothing. Had the executioner not marked the cell door incorrectly, Paine would have been executed. Then he gets mad at Washington.

"Oh, so you go on and on about how we're friends, and how we're France's allies, but when I get taken prisoner you leave me to die? You're a fraud and you suck," said Paine to Washington, probably. Washington didn't write back so Paine published his letter. People who love Washington are upset.

Then Paine writes The Age of Reason, a paper that was VERY critical of organized religion. Despite being built on Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion, most of the US shuns Paine and he adds a whole lot more people to his list of enemies.

Then he died alone, and only six people showed up at his funeral. Even his obituaries roasted him saying that he did "some good, and a lot of bad" or something to that effect.

Then years later someone digs up his bones to try to bring them back to England to be buried where he was born and the bones got lost somewhere, just to add insult to injury.



So yeah, Thomas Paine. Great man, one of my personal heroes, and someone who really got screwed over toward the end of his life.
