So...

Nintendo revealed a new IP?
And it involves chucking sushi at your opponent?

Well...it fills a box on my Bibgo chart so....yay?

Watching them try to make ARMS out to be a super competitive and technical e-sport is fascinating.

Funny how it hasn't even been a day since this quote was made, and it can already be applied.

Honestly, I actually like the way it looks, but the timing on this could have been much, MUCH better.
Here. I'll fix that for you.
"Nintendo. They know how to market. They understand how to run a business. They know how to make video games. They just don't know how to please everyone."

How much longer is Arms going? I'm almost done at my friends shop and want to know if I have time to catch the end of it in the event of any surprises.

It's not really Nintendo's fault that their fanbase is so rabid that they'll take any void as whatever their favorite game is SURELY being revealed.

They did a lot of damage control on wild emo assumptions by their fandom this E3 to the point that I'd say outside of Mario Odyssey's sheer crazy it was the biggest thing they did. As much as our anticipation tends to make us drool for more games it was to be expected that all of the big Switch reveals would be in the Spotlight.

I mean, Smash Bros and Animal Crossing would be NICE, but as big as those franchises are I'll give them the benefit of the doubt they're not nearly far along enough to actually presentable or they would have shown them. They certainly aren't as urgent as the two games that they showed absolutely nothing of because one had a raging fandom claiming the franchise was dead and the other one had an equally raging fandom claiming the franchise would never come to the Switch because the latest games weren't. No one is actually WORRIED about Smash and Animal Crossing, so they don't need to be covered until they can actually show some kind of footage.

Nintendo left people desperate for Smash Bros at E3 2012, too, come to think of it. People assumed it was going to be revealed right then because they wanted it. Meanwhile in 2013. . .

I think 2018's gonna be the real interesting time to watch for the Switch. So many interviews making weird winks to hypothetical games no one even asked for that we certainly haven't seen yet, Nintendo planning out their pipeline into 2019. I don't know if it's gonna be a tsunami of dream games, but I'm seeing a wave of SOMETHING rolling in. Right now we're at the point where all the water pulls back from the beach and everyone walks onto the dry sand confused.

It's a single elimination tournament, and considering how dominant some of these matches are it might not last too long.

This game looks super unbalanced.

Ribbon Girl so obviously has an edge it isn't even funny.

Now now.

Let's not make the classic fighting game mistake of assuming things are overpowered right off the bat.

We have to see if countertech is made.

I just watched the Mario + Rabbids 30 minute Treehouse thingo and man that game looks so good.

I was horrified, and now I literally can't wait to play it.

Imagine if Bill teases another game and everyone ignores him this time.

And then said game turns out to be Smash.

ARMS is a slow, clunky game where characters move like tanks.

Except Ribbon Girl.

The problem with this game is that the only thing separating characters are their gimmicks and rush attacks, as well as stat differences.

Other than that they have basically the same moves.

Therefore, the meta game will be dominated by characters with the gimmicks that have more utility.

So Ribbon Girl and Min Min in this case.

Like, Ribbon Girl gets insane mobility from her multiple jumps. Min Min can just send your attacks back at you.

Then you have Spring Man, who gets a power boost when low on health. That's not something you can strategise around and integrate into your play, it's just a passive crutch.

They even flat out said Master Mummy is "underwhelming" on stream.

This game isn't going to have an e-sports scene. It has Mario Kart depth, not serious competitive fighting game depth.

Not surprising, it's from the same team.

The difference is Smash has characters with unique movesets.

ARMS is like if every character in Smash has Mario's moveset, but they just have one single differentiating special maneuver. At that point, yeah, it's easy to see who's better, especially when the officially hired commentators are pointing out the imbalances.

It has Mario Kart depth. It's like how heavyweights are always better in Mario Kart because they make you go faster. They take a little more skill, but offer objectively better results upon mastery.

>Ribbon Girl is overpowered
As she gets bodied
>Being played by SkywardWing

Even he thinks he's bad at video games.

Yeah, I thought that from the moment I saw it...It's metagame isn't going to be very big...

usually games that try to change up the fighting game formula in big, significant ways end up not having a big metagame and die.

The only exception that I know of is Smash...

It's assuming things before having the game, we don't have enough info to fully disclose which characters are better or not, you're only theorising on pre-release footage.
Which, in case you haven't realised by this point, is never accurate as we saw with Smash, or early-metas like Splatoon and Overwatch where the Roller and Bastion were considered too overpowered by many during the first month or so.
It doesn't matter what "depth" the game has(which, really, is more comparable to Splatoon than MK due to the various equippable arms), what matters is that you're making assumptions on a game you don't have and on a meta that doesn't exist yet.
If I turn out to be wrong feel free to call me out next month but history has proven that no one can predict how a meta is going to develop before release

No, history has proven that you don't base meta assessments on the tournament winners, but actually analyse the fighters instead.

"Bowser is OP" was a bandwagon, not an analysis with any basis.

The depth of the game does matter, I've seen the whole roster, unlike Smash, and they have very little differences besides something very obvious, also unlike Smash.

People also have played the game quite a bit, between Test Punch and events.

Welp. I'm genuinely confused as to what the Treehouse could even before tomorrow. They've shown Mario two or three times, Yoshi once (and that's not till 2018 so I can't imagine they can show much), Kirby doesn't even seem to have a playable build yet, so what exactly are they gonna showcase tomorrow?
