It's this weird Sonic Metroidvania fusion.

Sonic and Metroidvania is something that can mesh together really well.

Shattered Crystal tried it, but it wasn't great.

A fan game called Sonic Chrono Adventure, did it really well though. It's made by the same guy who made Sonic: Before the Sequel, and Sonic: After the Sequel.
