Here's a challenge for you guys!

Scenario: in an alternate version of the world, Nintendo stopped creating characters after the NES! Games in the relevant series still happened down the line as if nothing happened, but now you're in charge of making the first Super Smash Bros. roster for...the NX?! Yep. Despite every other game happening, Smash hasn't yet. Uprising still happened and Fire Emblem came to the west, for example, but Smash hasn't existed yet. But thanks to you, it will!

Rules
Create a Smash Bros. roster with the following criteria:

- Twenty characters, maximum
- Only characters that either made their debut on the NES OR made their debut in the arcades and had an NES port are acceptable (the last part is so you can still add Mario :p). NO OTHER SYSTEMS are allowed.
- In these circumstances, you may take a character's later appearances into account. For example, Luigi can use Luigi's Mansion stuff, since that game still happened, but like, King Boo was a normal Boo and E Gadd was Prof. Hector or something.
- Modern DK can be used since Donkey Kong is still the character's name, but if you want the wielder of the Triforce of Power, it must be Ganon and not Ganondorf, since it's a new form with a new name, and as such can be considered a new character.
- Third Parties are allowed, but they MUST follow the same rules for inclusion as Nintendo characters.

So, who do you choose?
:4mario::4luigi::4peach::4bowser:

Simon Belmont

Edit: I just realized, in such a world, would Ridley still be that ugly thing?

At least no one can say that he is too big.

Detective Pikachu does honestly lend itself well for a feature film.
It makes sense they went for that rather than something more traditional.

Thank you for making the correct choice and being the only person to pick a legit interesting new character we haven't got in Smash.

Well, not officially anyway...

But Simon and Hero of Light are interesting.

If the Pokémon movie is Detective Pikachu...

...Then will the Sonic movie be Sergeant Sonic or something?

at least then he can really be an attack helicopter

But Simon and Hero of Light are interesting.

Simon could be but I don't have enough personal attachment and don't know enough about him to say.

If by Hero of Light you mean the Warrior of Light from Final Fantasy, then he WOULD be interesting if it weren't for the arbitrary condition of needing to debut on NES.

Before the PS1 remakes and Dissidia, and the books, Warrior of Light was basically just a bog standard Warrior. Essentially, the actually cool Warrior of Light has nothing to do with the NES and is effectively a different character.

EDIT: My apologies for not noticing, @Burruni

According to the rules, all the other games happened.

So those things would affect him.

Well if you ever wanted to know more about Simon Belmont, all you need to do is ask this fella.

No, because in the lore of the original Final Fantasy, "Hero of Light" is any one of all four playable protagonists.

Whom you could class as anything you wanted, and they would even be females if they were White Mages.

Warrior of Light as seen in Dissidia, the books, and in the opening movie of the PSP/PS1 remake, is a completely different character. He even has his own name in the books. His design is also intentionally based on multiple classes and he uses abilities from multiple classes too.

Essentially, Warrior of Light as seen below, is an original character created to represent FF1 in games like Dissidia, because the original FF1 on the NES didn't have a real hero protagonist. You just chose classes who were given no canon name or characterisation.

I mean, this pretty much gets back to what a lot of people have been saying, or at least thinking.

NX needs to really be a success because if it isn't, it might mark the end of console development for Nintendo. Not because they can't feasibly make another one, but because they will watch everything else they are putting out, like their mobile stuff doing so much better and they will just opt to focus more on those things.

Nintendo X Mobile isn't automatically a recipe for success because Nintendo's developers and higher-ups have proven time and time again how out of touch with the current market they are. Mobile Gaming is a side of the industry that demands being in touch, so Nintendo's quirkiness and desire to be so different isn't going to carry them here (like how it didn't carry the Wii U).

Pokémon GO seems like an unstoppable juggernaut right now, but it can't continue to be if it keeps going like it is. More and more people are starting to realise that the game itself isn't actually very good at all since it barely works, and are putting it down as a result. I've also heard you hit "the wall" when your Trainer Level hits Level 20. At that point, it becomes really hard to level up your Trainer more and you basically stop progressing in any meaningful way. Combined with the fact that fads are so common in the mobile industry, it's not too hard to imagine Pachter being completely right about the game falling off in 4 months. I think it could fall off in an even shorter time depending on how well the servers are maintained and depending on whether or not they fix major issues like the broken radar quickly enough. Negative news stories like more robberies, injuries, or deaths being caused directly by the game could also effect the game's sustainability.

It's great that Nintendo's stock prices shot up but Nintendo fans need to stop saying this means Nintendo is sorted and we have nothing to worry about. Especially since Pokémon GO isn't truly a Nintendo product. It's not made by them and it doesn't reflect Nintendo's plans going forward.

This stuff has been on my mind for a while now and I've just sort have been waiting for a good chance to mention it.

Yes, but we are allowed to use the lore of games after the NES.

Just not characters that debuted after it, hence the mentions that Uprising happened and FE came over to the west.

We can use the modern version.

I'm just going to do Nintendo characters since 20 is a pretty damn small roster...

Oh yeah, I was supposed to watch that, for some reason I forgot
But why are there TWO "Danganronpa 3" anime AT THE SAME TIME?

Jokes on you, everyone I liked from the first game already died there :^)
Some has probably has answered, but I guess they wanted to tell two stories without doing the whole:
Present Day EP 1 -> Flashback EP 1, Present Day EP 2, Flashback EP 2, etc.

We can use the modern version.
But Warrior of Light is not "the modern version".

He is an entirely different character. The Warriors of Light from the original FF had no names, and could be any class you chose, and would be a different gender depending on the class. They were intentionally created as complete blank slates for players to project themselves onto.

The Warrior of Light from games like Dissidia has his own name and background, is specifically created with abilities of multiple classes rather than just one like the Warriors of Light from the original, and has a band of friends in the novels.

His name is Zest.

It's like I said, the Warrior of Light was specifically created as a new character to represent FF1 in games like Dissidia. He did not exist at all in the original FF1, and the precise reason he was created was because FF1 had no concrete, canon protagonists.

In conclusion, the Warrior of Light from more modern games did not debut on the NES. He's a different character. So you can't put him on a roster with the pre-requisite of "only characters who debuted on the NES".

Yoshi didn't debut on the NES.

His first appearance was Super Mario World.
For the record, his appereance in Yoshi's Cookie was 2 YEARS AFTER Super Mario World.

Yoshi's Cookie: November 1992.
Super Mario World: November 1990.

So why are people including Yoshi again?

IDK what the situation is with Yoshi but I replaced Yoshi with Peach given her relevancy and that I forgot to add her in my roster.

Situation is that Yoshi breaks the rules given.

He debuted on the SNES.

Shrek 5? Loved the first 2, 3 was ****, and still haven't seen 4. No thank you. Plus they waited too long for me.

And why is the announcement of a Detective Pikachu film a thing and still no word of an international release for the game?

You know what?

I realise this is a place primarily of core Nintendo/Smash fans and so that's why these "Smash rosters with arbitrary rules that make the roster 100% worse" games come up a lot (when it isn't Pokémon speculation).

But you know, there is something else that I'm surprised nobody has brought up yet for speculation.

The Sonic 25th Anniversary Party is happening in about 2 days from now.

We got a 4-5 hour stream that is touted as the place where "the Future of Sonic will be revealed". That's a pretty big deal, especially considering what year this is for Sonic.

So what do you think will be revealed?

My predictions (brief note - I'm not saying all of these things are likely to happen at once. I just think they all are possible, and we could get just one of them, all of them, or anything in between):

-Something related to Sonic Boom. Most likely Season 2 trailer, and maybe something related to Fire & Ice, like a new feature for the game, or maybe even a demo being released after the show.

-Something about the Sonic movie. I don't think a trailer is that likely, at least not a very expansive one. At most, I'd expect like, a 20 second teaser that doesn't actually have footage from the movie. Realistically though, I think they will show some screenshots of it, reveal some of the people working on it, and maybe go into the concept of the movie, like the setting and characters.

-Sonic merchandise, of course. I expect the First4Figures Sonic 25th Anniversary statue, as well as possibly their upcoming Silver the Hedgehog statue, will both be revealed with a physical prototype model. And I think there will be some new stuff in general from other companies.

-More details on Sonic's appearance in LEGO Dimensions. Showing off what comes in his Level Pack, and some gameplay.

-I think it's possible that the SEGA mobile RPG will be shown off here. Sonic will most likely have a heavy presence in that game and they literally just teased it this week so it makes sense.

-Crush 40 concert is confirmed, and I think they will debut a new song from the new Sonic game. Remember how Johnny said him and Jun were confirmed to do music for the new game, but deleted the tweet after?

-And of course, the new main series/25th Anniversary game. I will be honest, I am hard pressed to predict exactly what it will be. There's literally nothing to go off. The most I can say is that I think it will be something totally new. I essentially this is gonna be another case like Unleashed, where they have something really ambitious and massive in scale, and it will, to some degree, be a new gameplay formula. And as much as I want more playable characters (at least Tails and Knuckles for now), I think another Sonic-only game is most likely, especially since Aaron Webber hinted at this.

-I also think it's possible we will get announcements of either Sonic remasters or spin-offs. I think a PC port of Heroes or Colours is very plausible as both were name dropped as titles SEGA was "heavily considering" porting to PC (Heroes also does actually have an old PC port already). They also name dropped Unleashed, but stated it was "still being assessed as to whether or not it's realistically possible". Either way, Unleashed is the one I really want to see. Colours would be nice too, but it doesn't need it as badly (it's already universally well-received for the most part) and I don't think they could fix that game's problems through a remaster since they are more inherent to the game. I think another Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing game is also possible.

-Also a trailer for Big's Big Fishing Adventure 3.

-Something completely unexpected.

-More memes. Live memeing.

EDIT: An image from Tracker that sums up my predictions pretty well.

I don't know why I'm bothering with this if I can't make any of you play EO anyways but
This is made by the same team as EO, so it's gotta be good, right?
There's a demo on the EShop so go play 7th Dragon III Code: VFD nerds

Was going to post something similar on July 22nd, but I might as well do it now.

1.) The next main series game: Pretty much a no-brainer. We know Sonic Team has been cooking something up in the oven for awhile, we just don't now what it is. I can't predict anything other than it will star Sonic, you go fast, and collect rings.

2.) New Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice trailer: Now is about the time we get a new trailer for the game, one that hopefully convinces more people about. I also expect them to show a new cut scene.

3.) Sonic Boom season 2 announcement and sneak peak: Season 2 is pretty much all but confirmed, and it makes sense it show it off here. They'll probably explain the differences between season 2 and season 1.

4.) Sonic in LEGO Dimensions trailer: It will likely show off some gameplay of him and his level. Maybe an interview with some people at Traveler's Tales. Hopefully we'll see some more characters other than Sonic.

5.) First4Figures shows their 25th Anniversary statue: Possibly show off some more merchandise as well.

6.) Some news about the Sonic movie: We know next to nothing about the movie, so now would be a good time to spill the beans. We'll probably get a brief synopsis and what Sonic will look like. We could also get the reveal of a director and some cast, but I find that more unlikely. (This is honestly what I want to see the most, aside from the new game of course)

7.) Sonic 1 and 2 remastered get console releases, with 3 and Knuckles announced: Pretty much getting into wish-list territory, but I think this would be a great way to celebrate the classic era.

8.) More PC ports announced: Heroes, Colors, and Unleashed are some of the few main series Sonic games to have not made it to PC. With SEGA having some more pocus on PC gaming, I can see them wanting to port these games.

Nightmare Geese looks somewhat terrifying up close.

I'm actually having fun NOT knowing what the hell is happening.

Especially since Sonic games tend to be notorious for getting leaked.
Well that's why speculating about it is fun this time.

We've got so little to work off of that if you are right about something, you can be like "YEEEES".

So what was the hardest boss fight you ever had in any video game

Mines were Unknown in Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Jetstream Sam in Metal Gear Rising and the Wing Fortress Zone Boss in Sonic 2

The hardest boss i've ever fought was Dullahan from Golden Sun: The Lost Age.

Because of my completionist syndrome, i tend to beat all the extra bosses in any game ever, but Dullahan is so damn frustrating that i gave up and went straight for the Final Boss instead.

The Lingering Will in KH2: Final Mix on Critical difficulty is up there.

Also, various super bosses in FFXIII and it's sequels.

And Feral Chaos in Dissidia 012.

And Yellow Devil.

Hm...

That's a toughie...

I have to think about that...

Uh...

  • Sturm from Advance Wars
  • Cackletta Soul from Mario and Luigi: Super Star Saga
  • Wily Machine from Mega Man 9
  • Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream from Punch Out!! (Only one one this list I have not beaten.)
  • Prince Vorken from The Wonderful 101

Gotta agree with the W101 fight here as well.

Also don't know if it was just me, but Girhiam destroyed me a lot of times in Skyward Sword.

The final boss of Rodea the Sky Soldier (Wii) was a pain in the ass. It was a terrible way to end a really good game.

In terms of others, Tabuu on Intense mode, King Arthur in Sonic and the Black Knight, Yellow Devil, and the final boss of Wonderful 101. Just to name a few.

  • The Shadow Queen from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (I still haven't beat her to this day... though it's been a long while since I played that game)
  • Champion Cynthia from Diamond/Pearl/Platinum (that Garchomp)
  • Ghetsis from Black/White (that Hydreigon)
  • Primal Dialga from the Mystery Dungeon games (I have no words)
  • Dark Mind from Kirby and the Amazing Mirror (this boss took me so many tries to beat as a kid)
  • Zeekeeper from Mario and Luigi: Dream Team (blame it on its over-reliance on the gyroscope feature)
  • Sunnycide from Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time (another boss that took many tries for me to beat as a kid; I haven't beaten PiT, only going as far as the final level, but I've seen gameplay footage of the final boss, and oh my, it looks really hard)
  • Fawful Express from Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (this battle is all about acing those fire breaths. If you don't achieve perfect fire breaths 99% of the time, you pretty much lose. I wasn't perfect with them most of the time, so you can imagine how many tries it took)
  • Dark Bowser/Dark Star Core from Mario and Luigi: Bowser's inside Story (took me a few tries, but it was a really nice challenge).
