The episode does a nice job showing how the Alola Ratticates and Rattatas are considered to be pests. A whole group of them invades a pineapple farm and eats the pineapples there, and when they get scared away, they scare a trio of Tauruses that are transporting several logs, causing the logs to fall onto the road and create a temporary blockage. Indeed, the term "regional pests" really fits the term for Pokemon like them as well as Patrats, Sentrets, Zigzagoons, etc.
Also, Geez Louise, Hala is super strong! That dude can carry four giant logs with incredible ease!
We also learn that the Hala is the one who made Ash's Z-Ring, and he apparently makes multitudes of them. That begs the question: how did Tapu Koko get ahold of one of them? Turns out Tapu Koko snuck into Hala's house during the night and took the one that had the Electrium-Z. If it wasn't for the window being open, I wonder how Tapu Koko would've snuck into Hala's House?
Hala also does a pretty clever job testing Ash to see if he is ready for the Island Trial. He asks Ash how would he get rid of the Alola Ratticates and Rattatas that have been eating up the crops recently. Ash says he would simply battle them, but Hala tells him that that's not the answer, as part of the Island Challenges is rooted in the tradition that not everything is all about battles. He tells Ash that he will only let him undergo the trial once he has figured out the answer.
The next day, we see that Ash has been thinking about this question nonstop, and the troubled look on his face leads to all of his friends intervening and asking what's going on. One of my favorite moments in the episode is when Kiawe sits directly in front of Ash and tells him,
"What did Hala tell you? Let me hear it. I won't be able to help you if you don't." Kiawe is a total bro because he senses Ash is feeling troubled and is willing to give him a helping hand. I'm really looking forward to the episode when Ash visits Kiawe's farm, because I'm really liking the relationship that Ash and Kiawe are developing.
Also, I laughed when Rotomdex revealed that Ash has sighed
786 times since Hala gave him the question. LOL, Rotomdex just had to go to the specifics.
When Ash learns about the history of Alola Ratticates and Rattatas and their relationship with Yangoose and Gumshoos from Rotomdex, he realizes the answer to Hala's question is to use the Gumshoos and Yangoose against those Normal/Dark-type Pokemon. He tells Hala about it later on, and Hala commends him. Ash confesses that he actually got some help from his friends in finding out the answer, but Hala commends him again saying that one should always turn to friends whenever they struggle to find an answer. This idea of friendship really portrays Alola quite nicely. Ties of friendship are similar to ties of family, which is a major theme in the Hawaiian-inspired region.
The battle Ash has in the Island Trial was pretty cool. He managed to defeat the first Gumshoos and Yangoose by using the sand so that Pikachu and Rowlet could hide from them, with the latter also resorting to using the leaves to make itself more evasive in its attacks. When it came to the battle against Totem Gumshoos, Pikachu managed to defeat it by once again using the sand and combining it with Quick Attack so that Gumshoos couldn't track it down easily, and then Pikachu proceeded to use multiple Quick Attacks to wear down the Pokemon until it was finally KOd. Another really nice element I liked in the battle was when Totem Gumshoos picked up one of the rocks nearby and slammed it into Rowlet to KO it. It was really nice to see how the Pokemon made use of its given environment to attack its foe. We also see that Tapu Koko watches Ash's battle from afar. It was nice to see the Guardian Deity appear again!
The ending was pretty cool too. Ash approaches Totem Gumshoos and asks it if it's OK, to which Hala smiles. Surprisingly, the Pokemon is the one who hands him the Z-Crystal, not a Trainer like Hala. Ash also convinces it to scare away the Alola Ratticates and Rattatas that have recently been eating up the crops. The next scene shows the Totem Gumshoos, the normal Gumshoos, and the Yangoose breaking into a market storage that the Normal/Dark-type Pokemon just infiltrated as they scare away all the Ratticates and Rattatas. Hala then tells Ash he looks forward to facing him in the Grand Trial, and the episode ends. We're going to see Ash fight Hala next week, and it's looking to be a good battle thus far based on the previews.
I wish Hau and Ilima made an appearance though. It surprises me that Ilima wasn't the one giving Ash the Normal-type trial, and it would've been nice to see Hau introduced in this episode since he's Hala's Grandson. The only way I can see Hau appearing later on at this point is if it's revealed that he has already been tackling some island trials in other islands.
