I really like that Mario movie poster! I like the realistic look, while the design of the Toads has me feeling good about how everyone else will look. It strikes a good balance between realism and staying true to the cartoony designs, in much the same way as Detective Pikachu and post-redesign Sonic movies did. I'm more optimistic now - if the story is decent and the acting is pretty good, we'll hopefully be looking at a solid enough movie in much the same way the other films I mentioned are.

Actually in my mind the only Mario movie before this new one is the live action movie from 93 which would be Dennis Hopper's last film credit I believe. I love his work ... Weird... Raul Julia would leave us similarly with Street Fighter ..... Heh.
Actually, Dennis Hopper was in many other movies after the Mario movie. He only just passed away in 2010.

My favorite Dennis Hopper related story with the 1993 Mario movie is the anecdote he told about his son's reaction to his role:

"I made a picture called Super Mario Bros, and my six-year-old son at the time (he's now 18) he said, "Dad, I think you're probably a pretty good actor, but why did you play that terrible guy King Koopa in Super Mario Bros.?'\" and I said, 'Well Henry, I did that so you could have shoes", and he said, "Dad, I don't need shoes that badly.""

So... assuming all franchises currently in are staying.

What are the three new franchises from each third party company that you find most likely for inclusion?

For convenience sake, here are the third party companies.

Konami
Sega
Capcom
Namco
Square Enix
Microsoft
SNK
Disney?

And for a bonus, which new third party companies do you find the most likely to join?

Just to clarify. It was supposed to be brand new franchises. Not continuations of old ones.

  • Konami: Bomberman would be the most likely inclusion from Konami.
  • SEGA: I'd probably assume that another character from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is likely but if there were any others, maybe someone from Virtua Fighter such as Akira Yuki, Sarah Bryant etc?
  • Capcom: I think another character from Street Fighter is likely in which I'm going with Chun-Li. If there were any other candidates, maybe someone from Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Ace Attorney, Ghosts & Goblins or Devil May Cry could be viable candidates?
  • Namco: I'm going with either someone from the Tales series or SoulCalibur series.
  • Square-Enix: This is quite a hard one, but Final Fantasy X is one of my fave FF games, I would opt for Tidus. But if there were any others, maybe Neku Sakuruba from the World Ends with You or someone from Star Ocean?
  • Microsoft: I'm going to go with someone from the Killer Instinct franchise.
  • SNK: Either Ryo Sakazaki, Nakoruru or Rock Howard.
  • Disney: Not sure. Maybe Aqua?
If there were any additional companies:
  • Arc Systems Works: Likely to be someone from Guilty Gear.
  • Tecmo Koei: Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden.

Top three most likely new franchises for Square Enix is a tough one, especially now that their western branch is sold. Nier seems like the obvious candidate, but after that it seems pretty ambiguous. They have some older franchises they seem to be giving another shot like Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile, other older franchises that are getting remakes and remasters like Tactics Ogre and Front Mission, and newer but smaller franchises like Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default that don't look like they are going away in the immediate future. Plus some currently or soon to be standalone titles like Diofield Chronicles and Forspoken that could turn into franchises in the future, and Romancing SaGa which has had a ton of ports pumped out on the Switch. They also have a long library of classic games if Nintendo wanted something iconic over something currently relevant.

At the moment I'm thinking Nier, Octopath Traveler (though I'd rather have Bravely Default), and something old akin to but not including Chrono Trigger. Depending on how some of their newer titles do, I could see a major shift in that list.

All of that said, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Nier was the only one with any real chance and any other characters were double-dipped from series already in Smash. Both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest have good options.

I know very little about Konami beyond what we have in smash, Yugioh and Boktai. So i guess i'll just skip them.

Sega:
Another Shin Megami Tensei rep
Yakuza

Capcom:
Ace Attorney (Weirdly absent from Ultimate, being the only big name Capcom series to not be in the game in any form)
Devil May cry

Namco:
Digimon
Super Robot Wars
Tales of

Square:
The World ends with you (Beyond that i dont really know, every other series i can think of that would be put in smash is already in)

Microsoft:
Halo

SNK:
King of fighters
Metal Slug

Disney:
Monkey island

Arc system works as a new company, i want Level 5 personally but i know that's not happening unless Level 5 reopens it's international offices.

Konami: Bomberman, Contra, Silent Hill.
Sega: Virtua Fighter, Phantasy Star, Shin Megami Tensei.
Capcom: Monster Hunter, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil.
Namco: Tales of series, Dark Souls/Elden Ring, Taiko no Tatsujin.
Square Enix: Nier, Space Invaders, Bravely.
Microsoft: Halo. Otherwise, it's pretty much any others' game for the other two.
SNK: Metal Slug, Samurai Shodown, don't know what else really.
Disney: Spectrobes. And good luck with that and anything else from Disney in general.

Konami:
  • Bomberman
  • Contra
  • Goemon or Silent Hill but both are pretty unlikely
Sega
  • Yakuza
  • Puyo Puyo
  • SMT
Capcom
  • Devil May Cry
  • Monster Hunter
  • Resident Evil
Namco
  • Tales
  • Dark Souls
  • probably SoulCalibur
Square
  • Nier
  • Chrono
  • maybe Bravely
Microsoft
  • Halo
  • Crash
  • Doom

SNK
- if Terry is both FF and KoF, then you can really only go with Metal Slug and SamSho before you get to incredibly unlikely stuff. And even those two don't have great chances tbh.

Disney
- you could list stuff like Monkey Island or Grim Fandango, but let's be real.

Frankly, only Capcom, Sega and Microsoft offer enough choices where all three seem like they could be entirely plausible. The rest get into not so likely stuff.

Oh, and new third-party wise, probably KT and Ubisoft. They're close with Nintendo, already in Smash, have reasonable choices, etc.

Wouldn't three be kind of too much for certain companies? But anyway...

Konami: Bomberman, Contra, and Goemon.
Sega: Virtua Fighter, Phantasy Star, and (if it counts) Shin Megami Tensei.
Capcom: Ghosts n' Ghoblins, Devil May Cry, and, I guess. Monster Hunter.
Namco: Tales, Soul Calibur, and...not sure.
Square Enix: Whatever they are, you can expect them to be RPG games.
Microsoft: Doom, Crash, and Perfect Dark.
SNK: King of Fighters, Metal Slug, and Psycho Soldier.
Disney: Nothing, to be honest.

As for new companies:
Koei Tecmo
Arc System Works
Marvelous Entertainment/Gasshopper Manufacture
Ubisoft

To be honest, for a lot of these I do think you could make a strong case for them adding another character for each of these companies. There are a few cases where I think getting another rep for their series is even more likely than any new franchise. But ignoring that, here are my picks.

Konami: Bomberman
Sega: Puyo Puyo or Phantasy Star
Capcom: Devil May Cry or Resident Evil
Namco: Tales
Square Enix: Nier or Chrono
Microsoft: Crash Chief Or Dovakhin
SNK: Iori Yagami
Disney: let’s be real it would be another KH rep

Hey, this might soun a little silly but, what about Ronald Rump? i know he is basically Trump, but he is an original character from a video game

look him up if you have to, he is from the one game of the officer jumping across Trump's Chest to save him

Not an expert, trying my best though

Konami: Bomberman, though I think additions of Metal Gear Solid in the way of Big Boss or other Snake clones is more likely, or Alucard.

Sega: additional Sonic characters, I don't really think anything else is especially likely.

Capcom: Monster Hunter, Okami, Professor Layton

Namco: Soul Calibur in the form of Nightmare / Seigfried.

Square : NieR Automa

Microsoft: I hope additional Rare characters as Battle Toads or Conker, but doesn't seem too likely.

SNK: ?

Disney: breaking the fourth party wall fully, Mickey Mouse, Epic Mickey style maybe ?

He's Level-5, not Capcom. And I made the mistake of him being a Nintendo character due to Nintendo publishing the titles in the West. But yeah, Layton ultimately belongs to Level-5.

That said, I'd love to see Layton come back for a crossover, whether for Smash Bros, with Ace Attorney again or maybe Famicom Detective Club. Interesting how Famicom Detective Club apparently inspired Ace Attorney, which then inspired Level-5's visual novel titles like Professor Layton and Zero Escape, where it comes back semi-circle where Professor Layton helped bring back interest in Ace Attorney after their crossover.

If we do get another Smash Ballot, Layton will very likely be the first character I vote for.

Three per company is...overly optimistic...

Konami - Contra, Bomberman, Mystical Ninja
Sega - Like A Dragon, Streets of Rage
Capcom - Ghosts n' Goblins, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry
Namco - Soulcalibur, Tales
Square Enix - Chrono Trigger, Bubble Bobble
Microsoft - Halo, Doom, Battletoads
SNK - Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug

And for a bonus, which new third party companies do you find the most likely to join?
Koei Tecmo.

Disney:
Monkey island
Riiiiiight. Disney owns Lucasarts!

Monkey Island is a good pick. I'd also be down for Maniac Mansion.

what about J-son from Mario Land? basically Jason Vorhees but he's a video game fighter, I mean he is technically his main character so he woulnd categorically get past that rule right?

Maybe as an Alt costume for Goomba if it gets added. I'd be all for a Goomba as playable.

Since questions always do well, what first party well established series you guys expect to see newcomers next time ? Hard mode: no mention of Mario, Pokemon and Fire Emblem.

Personally I see Xenoblade, Animal Crossing and Splatoon as inevitable , even IF Animal Crossing and Splatoon newcomers end up being Echoes, Isabelles or semi clones. Likely are any sort of Zelda newcomer, and I sort of hope for a DK newcomer because Cranky appears in the Mario Movie, and he'd be a great character to give the original Arcade game a character on terms of his moveset.

Somewhat related, but potentially stupid question: if Foreman Spike came to Smash, would he be a Mario rep or a Wrecking Crew rep? Because I'm pretty sure Wrecking Crew is treated as a seperate universe like DK, Yoshi, and Wario.

I'll admit, I'm still surprised he of all characters is gonna be in the Mario movie...

I'd honestly be surprised if we don't get a Splatoon newcomer for base game of the next game. Feels inevitable, and we all know Octoling would be pretty easy to implement, either as an echo of Inkling or a semiclone. Theme their default costume after whatever the most recent Splatoon game ends up being at the time, and there you go.

good question and a tricky one. i would think/hope splatoon warrants another fighter even if it just an octoling echo. beyond that i'm not really sure. kirby is the way sakurai likes it, DK is dormant, metroid has it's most popular picks, yoshi has been going this whole time a never got anything. now while everyone does say xenoblade 3 is likely i'll remind you all what happened the last time we were all sure about xenoblade. even then by the time the next smash comes around it'll be old news. animal crossing is certainly popular enough to warrant another one but going by isabelle sakurai seem them as rather limited. arms only if we get a second game.

Okay, that was actually pretty good. Bowser got a TON of spotlight, and it basically confirms what we all thought: Jack Black is PERFECT for the role. He showed up and casually WRECKED those Penguins!

I'll admit, while it IS noticable that Chris Pratt is, well, Chris Pratt, I think he did a good job as Mario, even if it might take some getting used to. We even got a taste of Keegan Michael Kay as Toad, and he did a good job, too. Also, say what you will about Illumination, but they're really good at the "animating" part of animation: really fluid and expressive, with colorful backgrounds to boot. Honestly, I'm looking forward to this.

Anyway, it was just a teaser, so we didn't get too much, but I think I'm sold either way. Anyway, back to Smash discussion (#PenguinForSmash).

Can't really judge Pratt's take as we barely heard anything and the two lines heard seemed weirdly different in delivery. Jack Black as Bowser sounded great; just the right mix of threatening with some goofiness and he rarely ever half asses any performance, so that will be solid if nothing else.

I liked seeing the Penguins there, some Mario 64 representation right off the bat.
Apparently, the poster included a BUNCH of easter eggs (the Odyssey kingdoms, Daisy's symbol, and possibly even one of the clouds?), so I think we'll be good in that regard.
