Speaking of third-party characters and cuts...

Do y'all think Joker's coming back?
I think he's really slept on. Atlus will license Persona to anyone who passes them a crisp $20, Sakurai clearly likes the character, Persona 5 only becomes more iconic over time, and Joker is one of the most popular Ultimate newcomers.

He's not quite Sonic or Mega Man-tier, but I think he's sitting firmly in the "much more likely than not" category with the Konami reps and Terry. The only issue is if Nintendo doesn't want to foot the bill, but Nintendo would have to be really financially conservative with the next Smash for things to get to that point IMO.

I have a funny theory about that.

Going back to the datamines, Ryu, Cloud, and Bayonetta's slots were all there after Mewtwo (I think). Corrin's slot was added much later. What if there was always going to be a slot for a "ballot character" but when Bayonetta proved to do really well, they decided she could fill in that slot. That new slot would then be decided to be a character from a recent game, which would go to Corrin. It would fit with Sakurai's hesitance for Corrin (they weren't originally the plan) while also making it so that no one technically lied.

I have no confirmation for this, but the puzzle pieces would fit.
I just think they used the convenience of her scoring well in the ballot to save on negotiations

Being fair, datamines around the time of Smash 4's post-launch cycle do imply the results were rigged in her favor.
I wouldn't say rigged but more likely is that the developers saw her high votes early on and picked her so the character can be done by the December 2015 Direct. Also Sega licensing which is another factor since Nintendo doesn't own the IP. If she was picked after October 2015 which was when the ballot ended then it's likely that she would have been revealed much later such as in 2016 because making a unique character takes time.

Unrelated but if I had to guess, King K Rool, Banjo, Wolf/Snake were probably included in the top spots alongside Sora and Bayonetta. Maybe also Ridley.

While popular, P5 isnt as big nowadays as it was back when Joker joined smash.
I actually disagree, there was a definite "vibe switch" around the time Joker joined Smash and I'd argue it was one of the most successful introductions of a series to a new audience through Smash. Persona became more beloved among a ton of Nintendo fans and eventually made its way onto the Switch to be experienced by even more.

That doesn't reflect my previous skepticism of Joker's return, but my point is that I think he's a bigger name now than he was before. We weren't talking about Joker for Ultimate... but if he wasn't in Ultimate, we would definitely be talking about him now. That's my perspective on it.

As a Joker main myself, i doubt it.

While popular, P5 isnt as big nowadays as it was back when Joker joined smash. Nowadays Sega is pushing Persona 3's characters and Metaphor as a new IP by the same team.
I feel like this could just open the door for Joker to be base game while ATLUS could push for Aigis or Will to be DLC though, couldn't it? Sorta like Cloud and Sephiroth in Ultimate.

Do you think Metaphor actually has a shot for Smash 6? Unlike Persona, that had the Persona Q game, Metaphor isn’t on Nintendo consoles at all right now. I’m actually playing through it right now and I’m about 15 hours in so Will would be cool. I’m just not sure if there’s actually a rule that the character had to appear on Nintendo first. I am enjoying that Will actually talks unlike the Persona protagonists and I hope they continue that with future Persona games.

Yeah, I find this more likely than replacing him outright. Like... mayyyybe Aigis could take Joker's place as later DLC, I guess, but Will probably not. Metaphor is its own thing so if Sakurai / Nintendo feels so compelled to platform it (Switch 2 title maybe?) then it'll probably just join alongside Persona rather than being an outright replacement. I'm not sure if we're really at that point with Metaphor yet, and I haven't played it, but I would be ok with that.

Although I prefer whichever avenue that gets us Aigis, personally. I just think she'd be awesome in Smash.

I don't think Nintendo cross-promoted Q2 with Joker's dlc pack at all beyond maybe a link on his smash website page?; regardless, I fully believe that Metaphor will show up on Switch 2... at some point, hopefully sooner than how long it took the Persona games to make the jump lmao

They could just use his inclusion to advertise a Switch 2 port.

I mean I'm almost certain it'll end up on Switch 2 eventually alongside Persona 3 Reload, so I don't think it really matters that it's not there yet lol

Come to think of it. What were the characters confirmed to do well on the ballot?

If I remember correctly...

  • Sora
  • Banjo and Kazooie
  • Snake
  • Veterans in General (though Snake was specifically named)
  • King K. Rool
  • Ridley
  • Chrom (in the East)
  • Dark Samus (in the West)
  • Bayonetta (apparently she did really well in Europe)
  • Simon (Castlevania as a whole seemed to do well)
  • Cloud (most popular Final Fantasy choice)
  • Dante, Lloyd, Shantae and Dragonborn (confirmed to be popular choices / not sure if this counts)
Did I miss any?

The list could theoretically also include some of the Assist Trophies since lot of them were likely highly voted but weren’t picked for priority reasons.

While not outright confirmed, I think the main reason Daisy was an Echo was due to the Ballot as well.

Other then Ken who was for historical reasons ("first Echo Fighter'"), they all seemed to be based on various Ballot requests.

I'm also willing to bet that while they would have gotten in anyway, Inkling and Isabelle would have done well on the Ballot as well.

This too.

No doubt Zero, Alucard, Krystal, Knuckles, Bomberman, and Isaac: Second Coming had to do with the Ballot for example.

Some indirect ones too like Klaptrap (to coincide with K. Rool) and the Moon (because of Skull Kid who was already an Assist).

Namely Isaac.

His assist trophy combined with the amount of spirits Golden sun got give me impression they thought about it but ultimately chose not to make him playable.

I feel like Dante's popularity took off much later than that, before Byleth was revealed. V's voice actor from DMC5 mentioned that he wanted his character to "be in MvC and Smash Bros. like Dante is gonna be" and speculation and support really kicked up from there. I think the mii costume was a reaction to that support, but I could be wrong.

It probably won't happen, but if the next game gets another Shin Megami Tensei character, I think Demi-Fiend might be pretty cool, or even Raidou.

But they'll probably just be from Persona or SMT V.

Has anyone ever brought up Clive from Final Fantasy XVI as a possible Smash character? I haven’t actually played XVI yet but my friend said it’s his favorite game ever. He also fits the archetype I’d like to see in Smash of a warrior with an animal companion. I think there’s a lot of cool stuff you could do with that. Since he doesn’t have a Nintendo connection, I assume characters like Terra Branford or Cecil might be more popular requests.

See this is why I wasn't too sure. Shantae and Lloyd probably did do well on the ballot. I could believe Dante did well too. But Dragonborn? That's a harder pill to swallow. That's why I wasn't sure if those four counted. They probably meant popular in a general sense.

Sakurai was too much of a coward to add the real Ballot winner*

For those who aren't aware, Magnemite is a popular meme pick in Japan. He even got a nod in a Pokken reveal trailer.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Smash 6 will now cost 70 dollars, rather than 60. I'm not sure if people would want to play more for a game they already have and can play on the current system through backwards compatibility.
Not sure that this would affect much, but it depending on how the tariffs shake out, it could end up costing upwards of $80-$90 in the U.S. which is...really depressing. Although it would probably only affect physical copies of the games since tariffs only apply to stuff that requires shipping...at least I think that's right. Either way it would still be kinda depressing since it would make physical copies more of a collector's item then they already are.

Tariffs aside though, if we're talking a port, I don't see why it'd cost more than Ultimate did, or at the very least that $70 would be considered a discounted price for including all of the game's DLC, which IIRC is fairly standard.

So I dunno if it was mentioned earlier (I don't think it was), and I dunno that it really fits here even though it's tangentially related to the Joker/Bayonetta topic, but we talk about general gaming news sometimes, so...

How does everyone feel about SEGA apparently filing a new trademark for Ecco the Dolphin?

I, personally, am terrified of the implications.

Raidou’s design could be an issue in regions such as China and Korea to the point where the rerelease of P5R on other platforms removed the DLC that referenced his game.

Jack Frost or any other demon/shadow/persona could be other potential options if it’s not limited to the protagonists and party members.

They just want to keep the IP. That's really it.

I mean I figure that's PROBABLY it, but I've been thinking about Sonic Racing CrossWorlds recently and hoping that it's basically an All-Stars Racing rebrand.

And then THAT makes me think of the old All-Stars Racing Transformed forum having a poll on it for DLC, which was won by Ryo from Shenmue, with the runner-ups being Hatsune Miku and Vectorman, but I specifically remember someone mentioning Ecco as a possible candidate and it gaining a fair amount of traction because of the absurdity of the idea.

So like it probably is just holding onto the IP trademark, but in the back of my mind I'm like "dear god, what if the unthinkable is realized..."

Not to mention SEGA being more committed to reviving older IPs (Virtua Fighter, the announcement that mentioned a new Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio, the Panzer Dragoon remake on Switch).

Oh my goodness...

Companies are item hoarders! They keep every new IP they come across for as long as they can even knowing full well that they're not gonna use them on the off chance that they just might need them later.

It's in the same position as Persona 5. Extremely popular (though not quite at Persona 5's level), an award show darling, a favourite 2024 game of many, many developers etc.

The lack of a low budget spin-off that barely anyone bought in a super niche genre isn't an obstacle.

The last conversation got me thinking...

Throwing away any thoughts of likeliness aside..

  • How much experience do you have with the Bayonetta franchise?
  • How do you like Bayonetta as a character outside of Smash?
  • How do you like Bayonetta as a character in Smash?
  • How much do you think Bayonetta adds to Smash?
  • What do you think of the Bayonetta franchise (not the character) content in Smash?
  • Would you be sad to see her go?

With how much of a darling that both Metaphor and Persona 3 Reload were for Atlus, both of them being their fastest-selling titles, I could see them getting representation in the next Smash game in some form. Maybe Metaphor will get a DLC fighter with or without a Switch 2 port? After all, the lack of a Persona 5 Switch port in 2019 didn’t stop Joker from being the first character revealed for Fighters Pass Vol. 1.

I think Snake's absence in Smash 4 is moreso an omen of the way we will discuss the absence of several guest fighters to come. We should probably get prepared for it.

Perhaps there was initially personal conflict about how Sakurai felt bringing in Snake and collaborating with Konami in the midst of their conflict with his friend Kojima. Maybe Konami's business model then looked different than it does now. We'll probably never really know, frankly. But I think a lot of this is trying to find reason where there may simply not be any.

We all know how guest characters work in other series, and we know that Smash is largely the exception to the rule. Guest characters have become series mainstays, Sonic, PAC-MAN and Mega Man are practically family. But can Smash afford to let this be the case with every single character? Everyone is Here existed as a special means of celebrating everywhere the series had been up to this point. I think it's proof that if push came to shove, we can bring Snake back, we can bring Cloud back, and whoever else. But the only character that we have any concrete, solid evidence of being anything more than a special case is Sonic the Hedgehog. He is the only character who has made it back to the series without the EIH hook, returning for Smash 4. And that doesn't make things much easier, because I think most people agree if there was going to be one single exception it'd probably be him.

I highlight this because Sonic is our only frame of reference for how the series "traditionally" handles its guests. And since Brawl only had two of them, the transition from Ultimate into the next game makes it especially uncertain. I don't know how many will return, I'm a bit optimistic that we'll see about half of them come back. But for the other half, there won't necessarily be a good reason why they aren't here. It will just be that they weren't prioritized in the transition. Namco is working on the game - why would Kazuya be cut? Sonic is back, why would Bayo or Joker not come back? I think we'll find that sometimes the answer is simply "just cuz". To shed some light on the way Snake was handled in Smash 4, we're just going to have to see where we go from here.
The “frame of reference” thing can also apply to cut characters in general in my opinion.

It seems like the recurring trend is clones or the ones in that archetype get cut such as Young Link, Pichu, Roy and Dr. Mario in Melee to Brawl. Also Wolf and Lucas (pre-DLC) in Brawl to 4 who are "pseudo-clones". The problem is that most of the new clones + Lucina and Dark Pit in Ultimate are Echos which could simply be a packaged deal in future games rather than being cut. So if the trend continues then its likely going to only happen to the older ones such as Pichu.

Completely original characters doesn't have a good frame of reference either since Mewtwo and Snake are the only ones that ever got cut that wasn't for technical limitations. The Ice Climbers and Pokemon Trainer got cut because of the 3DS. Ice Climber and Metal Gear are also the only solo series that had cut characters.

so it could be something new? exciting
Or it's a Kid Icarus Uprising remake.

I’m not sure if this is a hot take or not, but I vastly prefer Smash Ultimate’s base game newcomers compared to Smash 4’s, even factoring in that we had way less of them.
Hmm...Mega Man and Little Mac...vs. Simon...

Gonna have to give it to 4.

Anyone who thinks the ballot had anything to do with any Smash 4 is fooling themselves.

It's been made clear at this point that Smash characters are chosen multiple years ahead of time. The ballot ended just months before the last Smash 4 characters were revealed.

Bayonetta was always going to be in Smash 4. If she also happened to do well on the poll, that's just a happy accident.

That seems like a reach when he added 3 more via DLC and even more in Ultimate through DLC while keeping everyone. Sakurai has gone on record stating multiple times that Nintendo makes the decision for who gets added not him, so him limiting the 3rd Parties to those 3 doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. The decision almost certainly had to come from either an issue with rights, time constraints, or from another source at Nintendo whoever that is.
The ground had to be tested somewhere though. Sonic wasn't a too risky third party character to add, Snake kinda was, and Sakurai didn't exactly wanna go overboard apparently. The next up third party characters in Smash 4 where also quite "safe" additions. Mega Man and Pacman, with Ryu as DLC and later on Cloud and I guess Bayonetta. I also don't think Ryu is extremely risky, and Bayonetta was already becoming Nintendo exclusive around that point.

Cloud also was just about the most requested character whom many perceived as "never gonna happen", so that was a huge factor. I remember support around the time of Brawl for Cloud being enormous, but always shrugged off as unlikely.

Also Brawl was delayed to push Sonic in, he wasn't a high priority addition probably therefore. It might as well just have been Snake.
Come to think of it. What were the characters confirmed to do well on the ballot?

If I remember correctly...

Sora
Banjo and Kazooie
Snake
Veterans in General (though Snake was specifically named)
King K. Rool
Ridley
Chrom (in the East)
Dark Samus (in the West)
Bayonetta (apparently she did really well in Europe)
Simon (Castlevania as a whole seemed to do well)
Cloud (most popular Final Fantasy choice)
Dante, Lloyd, Shantae and Dragonborn (confirmed to be popular choices / not sure if this counts)
Did I miss any?
Inklings and Isabelle? I know many thought of them as inevitable, and I really think they where. I predicted them both too. But Splatoon was huge during the ballot, and Villager's inclusion naturally must've given Isabelle tons of attention. Both also got DLC Mii costumes in Smash 4 I think? Seeing that K.Rool got the same treatment, that's probably a hint. I think

Daisy is another one that probably did very well.

Also from the missing veterans, many must've gone to Wolf, Ice Climbers and Pokemon Trainer. I remember those 3 being missed by many too. And I remember many people claimed they voted for then.

Another I wouldn't be surprised about at all is Sephiroth. Cloud got in before the ballot, I imagine most of the fans of Cloud pushed for Sephiroth afterwards, much like how the K.Rool fanbase was the same crowd that rallied behind Diddy before.

  • How much experience do you have with the Bayonetta franchise?
None. Probably because I find it hard to get into action combo-heavy games. I did play some Devil May Cry 3, but it was not easy to get in.
  • How do you like Bayonetta as a character outside of Smash?
She's okay. I'm indifferent to her, so I don't hate her.
  • How do you like Bayonetta as a character in Smash?
I find her tricky to use, since I'm not used to doing her combos.
  • How much do you think Bayonetta adds to Smash?
I think she's pretty unique design and moveset wise. Not to mention our first and only 3rd Party female aside from Alex, who is an Alt of Steve, and Kazooie who's in a team with Banjo.
  • What do you think of the Bayonetta franchise (not the character) content in Smash?
Rodin is cool, the stage is cool, and the music is pretty good.
  • Would you be sad to see her go?
As someone who doesn't play her much, I probably wouldn't miss her a lot compared to the characters I enjoy playing. But like Snake, I think their appearance gives Smash that uniqueness that helps makes Smash Bros. special, so I would still be sad to see her and her music not come back.

The last conversation got me thinking...

Throwing away any thoughts of likeliness aside..

  • I played & finished 1-3 close to when they came out.
  • I think she’s great, though 3 really took the character in a direction I hated.
  • She’s cool, about as good of a representation of her you’re going to get in a e10 game, I just don’t like how they shortened her taunts in Ultimate, also I’m very bad at playing her.
  • She adds a very unique play style, and a mature female character.
  • The stage is perfect, Rodin is a cool assist trophy, the music is also great, but it’s a shame they had to remove the incredible vocals of multiple tracks.
  • No, she’s a cool addition, the series is really fun, but not among my favorites, and 3 kind of ruined the character for me, also I don’t have much faith in the future of the series knowing the current state of Platinum. Though not being able to have her and Dante fight in Smash at some point would be a shame.

About a Kid Icarus remake, why would Sakuari be on that project ? Remakes are often done by companies that had nothing to do with the original game. DKCR HD for example? Retro Studios has nothing to do with it. I also remember this to be the case of basically all Zelda remakes.

A sequel however is a different case and not often enough talked about.

  • Smash, a bit of community chatter, and 2 video essays.
  • The idea of her seems cool. Sad to hear they didn't do her justice in the third game.
  • She's cool. I like her combos, though I can't get the hang of actually playing with her in Ultimate since she isn't braindead like she was in SSB4. Personality wise she's OK. She doesn't seem to be as extra here as she is in her games so it's not as fun, and the seductress angle doesn't appeal to me.
  • Umbra Clock Tower adds a unique aesthetic, and some nice music tracks. I also think she's the coolest air rave character, though her competition is Mr. Spam Up Air soooo....
  • I'm kinda sad that we don't get the vocal version of Tomorrow is Mine. No Fly Me To The Moon is also a shame, but there was no universe in which we got a Frank Sinatra song in Smash.
  • Not really. I'm expecting her to leave, so I won't have the emotional response driven by surprise, and she's not a character I'm heavily invested in in the first place. I will be happy if she does come back, though that applies to every veteran.

Played through 1 and 2.
Fun.
Don't really play her.
...four?
Could use a Jeanne echo.
