To put it bluntly, the Gamecube is a case of "we didn't realize what we had until it was gone". When the Gamecube first came out, nobody cared for it, and it ended up being one of Nintendo's worst selling consoles.GameCube biggest failure ? How? It has prime games as Melee, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Mario Sunshine, and actually had relative good hardware. These are also games praised to the current day, and get remakes too. I don't really get it ? Maybe they just feel the GameCube isn't quote retro enough? They seem to have a same sort of hesitation with Gameboy Advance games, and maybe just wait for the nostalgia to really hit ?
Kinda baffles me you'd say that.
This. Basically, Gamecube is beloved and hailed for being so off beat with great ease these days, but back then it didn't really translate to big sales of the console. The one two punch of GC not being a DVD player and Nintendo's family friendly focus right as the mature gamer demographic really kicked into overdrive made it ill suited to capturing any real market outside the hardcores. While it avoided the Wii U's double mistake of failing to get loyalists or casuals in big numbers, it lacked the big hook other Nintendo systems (3D gaming with the N64, motion control of the Wii, home console made portable via the Switch) did, and the third place finished deomonstrated that.GameCube was the best of times, it was the worst of times
Arguably it was Nintendo's IPs at their most creative and experimental, for better and for worse. Some of them paid off like Melee, TTYD, Metroid Prime, etc but then certain series like 3D Mario and Zelda debatably fell flat in comparison to their N64 counterparts. Star Fox Adventures and Assault likewise weren't nearly as liked or successful as SF64, and the loss of Rare and Banjo stung at the time.
To be fair it failed to make back its budget even in a time when a few hundred thousand copies sold was all it usually took to make back a game's budget.I doubt it's a "**** the gamecube" thing. They probably just don't think an Eternal Darkness sequel would be worth making, and so they don't.
It could, but smaller discs meant less room for bigger textures/bumpmaps. Original Xbox obviously didn't have this issue.Kinda hard to compare really even if technically speaking GC could outdo it in terms of graphics
That always irked me. Like why does Nintendo always have to do things differently? It seemed an unusual decision at any rate. But that's Nintendo...It could, but smaller discs meant less room for bigger textures/bumpmaps. Original Xbox obviously didn't have this issue.
Actually the GameCube was quite profitable for them for most of its lifespan because they found a way to make the consoles for cheaper without sacrificing quality and sold every console that was sold for profit unlike most consoles at the time and succeeding which are more often than not sold at a loss.Personally I think GameCube did it just about as good as N64 right ? But both aren't SNES level, and I feel the Switch is a huge redeemer for Nintendo , alongside the Wii. Those and the 3DS might've been the most successful overall systems of Nintendo.
I really don't get it, either. It seemed especially bizarre that the WiiU featured downloadable Wii titles, completely skipping over the GameCube. Hackers were even able to demonstrate that the ISO files for GameCube games can run just fine on a WiiU, since the WiiU is essentially just a higher-powered Wii, which is in turn a higher-powered GameCube (the only reason they nixed the backwards compatibility for GC in later models is arguably because of structure necessary to run the half-sized discs).I know Nintendo is protective over the IPs when it comes to other companies doing them, but like....what is it with Nintendo and Gamecube games in particular where there seem to be issues in general?
Maybe, though it's also worth considering that half of Smash4's DLC was focused on bringing back veterans. With Ultimate, they established every veteran returning right at the start, which meant that everything to come afterwards would be a completely blank slate. Also, Mewtwo may've been a bonus, but he was also the very first DLC character, establishing for the first time that Smash was willing to utilize DLC to expand (which was quite the big deal at the time, given how little Nintendo in general had utilized DLC up to that point). Probably also worth noting that getting Mewtwo for free required having BOTH versions of Smash4, which made him a bit more of a high-effort acquisition than Piranha Plant was (more so given how limited the WiiU's audience was). Kinda makes the whole thing feel as if Mewtwo was a gift to the hardcore Smash fanbase who'd already be familiar with his gameplay in Melee, whereas Piranha Plant comes off as a joke freebie (if that makes sense). What about Mewtwo in Smash 4? I don't remember how all the reactions were, but it went over fine if not positively with most of the general audience.
I get what you're saying about a "bonus" character being a different circumstance than those in which popular requests are usually added; however, I don't think it follows that a popular character would go over poorly as a bonus fighter or that a generic Mario enemy was the only or best option.
Actually, if anything, the GameCube era was when Nintendo was seeing a return of several third-parties they lost with the N64 (which I'd argue was the Nintendo system most reliant on their first-party releases short of the WiiU and Virtual Boy). For instance, Square and Enix (later Square Enix) were back, even if they were giving Nintendo spin-offs and re-releases as opposed to new mainline entries of their flagship titles. Other franchises which were close to, if not entirely, non-existant on the N64 seemed to be coming back in full force (such as Mega Man). And perhaps most notably, they gained Sega as an unexpected ally after dropping out of the console market (and though Sega in general was multi-platform, they seemed to favor Nintendo in particular with all the games released exclusively to their platforms).Eternal Darkness and RE4... Two of my favorite games of all time. I think the biggest reason it failed was due to the sheer immensity of PS2. It just ate everybody's lunch. Kinda hard to compare really even if technically speaking GC could outdo it in terms of graphics. This was the era that made it clear Nintendo's IPs weren't enough to stave off the 3rd party development powerhouses that were feeding playstation fans endlessly. It's no wonder they has to shift market focus to family entertainment in the Wii, which of course worked really well and brought them back into the spotlight.
That's a part of it. But it certainly helps that Mewtwo is, well, a highly recognizable, iconic, and popular PKMN that appeals a great deal to casuals.Kinda makes the whole thing feel as if Mewtwo was a gift to the hardcore Smash fanbase who'd already be familiar with his gameplay in Melee
Did you forget that Steve's reveal alone brought sales of Smash Ultimate itself back up to release day sales?I don't doubt that adding third party franchises can expand the audience; it is a consideration I neglected to mention even though I think the number of people who will buy the game just for one particular third party character is fairly small, even in cases like Steve or Chief. You said above that basically any character, even an oddball like Plant, can hype people up, in which case I don't see as much upshot to adding third parties specifically.
I also don't doubt that third parties are highly profitable. I wouldn't go so far as to say that I am against the audience expanding; however, I don't want them to give in to crowd-pleasing if it means sacrificing the original identity of the game and/or makes having a fair roster selection even more difficult than it already is.
What's your source on thisDid you forget that Steve's reveal alone brought sales of Smash Ultimate itself back up to release day sales?
No joke, seriously: the power of Minecraft being the biggest game that everyone on the planet but me plays made the base game of Ultimate sell as much as it did when it was brand new and people were losing their minds over Joker.
I actually think Colosseum was one of the best Pokemon games I ever played. I also was really fond of Star Fox Adventures, Paper Mario TTYD, Mario Kart Double Dash, Metroid Prime, Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, Wind Waker and actually think they're just about the strongest titles in their respective series. I even enjoyed Jungle Beat for what it was worth, and of course Melee. The Gamecube failed because everyone assumed that Sword and shield were the first mainline Pokemon games on console, when Colloseum was actually the first, and that was on Gamecube.
He didn't do that, he just supposedly broke Twitter. Depending on how conveniently timed that maintenance was.Did you forget that Steve's reveal alone brought sales of Smash Ultimate itself back up to release day sales?
At the time Twitter hadn't been broken due to massive amounts of traffic since Michael Jackson died.He didn't do that, he just supposedly broke Twitter. Depending on how conveniently timed that maintenance was.
furthermore a geno fan SHOULDN'T want them to be desperate to expand smash's audience, as it's bad news for geno and it's being a switch game that made ultimate sell so much anyway
I'll work on getting this, but it's after 6AM and I need sleep for work. If I have time during my shift I'll try and post it sooner. What's your source on this
The breaking Twitter is debatable largely only because people are saying Twitter was having issues before the reveal, but I think it's hard to say either way. Steve's reveal is something that is social media slamming for sure.He didn't do that, he just supposedly broke Twitter. Depending on how conveniently timed that maintenance was.

But if they keep adding more and more big stars, that means Geno will be demanded LESS, which in turn means he'd be doomed to be a costume forever, if even that. Furthermore, that remaining 20% (which WOULD include Geno's fans, he should be treated as a first-party character despite Squenix ownership) is still 4 million people.I'm also not worried because Geno is in that 'inevitable' status I've mentioned more than once before, something I genuinely believe many characters fall into: there are a list of characters that WILL get into Smash EVENTUALLY just due to star power or demand because Smash HAS to cater to these things to stick around as I mentioned already. Any character that has star power or has yet to have their fan demand completely die off/became immortalized in the community after so much time being supported will eventually get into Smash...though obviously, the amount of star power or demand matters.
Also, don't undersell Ultimate for selling what it did just because it was on the Switch
Aaaaand that's why I think people with Geno hat edit avatars shouldn't want Smash to go bigger and bigger and bigger. If they didn't think Geno was worth it now, just imagine how Nintendo would feel if they gave into all of the modern Smash fan's sellout fantasies.Geno is still a quite irrelevant character
Like a smaller roster would benefit Geno? I cannot picture Geno getting in over any character currently present in Ultimate honestly.Aaaaand that's why I think people with Geno hat edit avatars shouldn't want Smash to go bigger and bigger and bigger. No, I mean Geno fans shouldn't want Smash to strive for all the third-party stars. Because Geno is only a "star" in the way the sun is, not the way Master Chief is.Like a smaller roster would benefit Geno?
Colosseum is not mainline. The Gamecube failed because everyone assumed that Sword and shield were the first mainline Pokemon games on console, when Colloseum was actually the first, and that was on Gamecube.
This.I wouldn't honestly call Geno "inevitable". Geno is still a quite irrelevant character from a game that's not even getting a port despite all it's popularity, and he's no main character or a villain. Square will probably want many of their more recognizable characters before Geno too, and we've seen exactly this with Ultimate.
At some point you guys gotta learn to be content with that Mii Gunner costume.
Geno is entirely dependant on getting a SMRPG remake, and I specifically say remake, and that's unlikely cause we've seen the one video where the SMRPG director proclaimed he wanted to make a sequel to the game. A sequel nowhere implies Geno will be there. With enough fan demand , there's a chance Square would add him after another Final Fantasy character, someone from Dragon Quest and Chrono. And there's no chance they'll add him as a sort of retro character either, as they definitely would pick the Black Mage for that.This.
I still maintain that Ultimate marks the end of the road for most of the old time requests like Geno. That is, unless they continue to appear in games (Waluigi, Bandana Dee, etc) or are miraculously revived (i.e Golden Sun getting a new game or remake or whatever).
And no, Smash's roster getting smaller won't help out Geno's chances, quite the opposite frankly. I can ensure you that they would 100% never put Geno in if anyone of Cloud, Hero or Sephiroth were cut.
Same here. The formula of Pokemon just has to change, they've been reusing models since forever, and the battle system despite being loved is starting to feel outdated. They can very well stick with it, but throw in some more lively animations, make it look like an actual battle instead of... What it is. Take notes from Dragon Quest if you must.Colosseum is not mainline.
Trust me, my nostalgia says it absolutely should be mainline, especially with the shaky quality of recent games, but I fear it's all but been retconned at this point. It was technically created by another company, and Pokémon makes little to no nods to it. A shame, I'd take a new adaptation of it and XD over a lot of the modern ideas they come up with.

Wouldn't be surprised if that was a side effect of Capcom's current state of priorities...Street Fighter 6's new realistic art style sucks ass.
I wanted, like, Alpha 4 with ArcSys-level graphics. This is pretty much the exact OPPOSITE of that.
Maybe both? He's primarily in his normal state, but his Special moves could use his ghost form. For John Raimi the protagonist from Geist I can not decide if I would like him in Super Smash Bros. as normal or as a ghost. In Geist when he is a ghost, he can control other people as well as animals and objects when he enters their body.
It's like they're trying to compete with Tekken or something haha or maybe that's just for fmvs?Street Fighter 6's new realistic art style sucks ass.

Skies of Arcadia!
This would have given me a character on my wish list in Bandana Dee, but overall, I'd say the lineup is a little weaker. Crash would have been a better end to the first pass, but I don't think Arle is as exciting as Joker, even if she is pretty cool in her own right.Quick question: how would you guys feel if this was the DLC lineup for Ultimate?
Bonus: Bandana Waddle Dee
Vol. 1 (if it had 6 fighters)
Vol. 2
- Arle
- Hero
- Banjo & Kazooie
- Pyra / Mythra
- Terry
- Crash
- Min Min
- Dr. Eggman
- Sephiroth
- Edelgard
- Kazuya
- Sora
To be honest, I wouldn't be too surprised if FF6 got the FF7R treatment. You know, I joked about seeing Terranigma localized for Switch; turns out that might be the case.
Famitsu: More HD-2D Remakes to Come from Square Enix
The big money would be in Chrono Trigger and FFVI getting the treatment (the latter already apparently has the opera scene very much like HD-2D in the Pixel Remaster), though that might not be for a while. Kind of odd that there's a decent chance we'll see Bahamut Lagoon arriving on Switch sooner than something like Super Mario RPG, but here we are.
