Now that have successfully turned this into the Aus general thread,

How did State govt's economic policies change in the years leading to World War 1. I wanna say they became more protectionist, especially in regards to migrants. But at this time the world economy was strong as fuark, so wouldn't it have made more sense to trade more?

i would argue that a primary driving factor behind protectionist policies at that time was the desire to become independent - the vast majority of australia's economy came from its trading with the commonwealth-incorporated countries, so while it didn't make economical sense to put up trade barriers, it was probably something that urged along australia's establishment as an independent state

reallyfastcar, if you have more questions then ask them in the relevant Ask a Question sticky thread, this one looks like its on the fast track to closure lol

disproving determinism
I was just hoping you could give me some insight into the evolution of the market economy in the southern colonies. My contention is that prior to the Revolutionary War the economic modalities, especially of the southern colonies could most aptly be characterized as agrarian pre-capitalist.

But we were all up on Uk's **** at the time. Half our exports went there and way over half our capital came from there.

And federation wasn't so much for independence from Britain(otherwise we wouldn't have our beloved queen right now), as it was for the colonies to come together as one country.

i suppose protectionist policies would also have fostered stronger relationships between what were at the time separate colonies

probably a host of factors involved, remember we are looking at it retrospectively and can't assume those people at the time were thinking what we were...for all we know someone had the foresight to see world war I's eventual effects on britain's economy (yeah don't take this point seriously) - and as you said australia was basically stapled to britain

and i obviously know little to nothing about this subject

This is the ssb64 social thread.

Please keep the irrelevant discussion there.

Lets try to welcome new members to the community rather than spamming their threads. :)
