New How To: Four Special Move Types

The actions that really define the personality of each character are special moves! In Brawl, you can do four different moves with just one button and different directional tilts on the Control Stick.

These are the four types. Control for each is quite simple.

<Standard special moves>

Many of these are basic attacks, like the firing of a weapon.
(Normal Special Move: Mach Tornado)

<Side special moves>

These are bold attacks that launch in the direction you tilt the stick.
(Side Special Move: Triple Dash)

<Up special moves>

These are crucial. They’re used to do high jumps and for recovering when you’re falling off the stage.
(Up Special Move: Shuttle Loop)

<Down special moves>

Many of these do unusual things, like reflect enemy attacks.
(Down Special Move: Dimensional Cape)

Our model was Meta Knight.

To enjoy more of the depth of special moves, try holding the button down longer to charge up attacks, rapidly pressing the button repeatedly, or tilting the Control Stick while doing the moves. You might also want to try them in midair.

Surprisingly, there’s a variety of hidden uses for many of them.

There is nothing new. It's "Four Special Move Types" not "New Special Move Types".

There is nothing new. This is borderline spam unless you use this post to refer to Meta Knight's special moves, which are rather fine I must mention.
It's....sort of spammin, but hey it's a new update. An update, is an update, is an update.

Metaknight has never EVER looked this sleek!!! WAHOO!

Ok it wont let me edit my post and I didnt want to post that in the first place, I hit enter by accident. So Ill start over

WOW!! Just WOW! this update was -A-****ING-mazing. Not only is one of my favorite video game bosses of all time from a childhood favorite game in brawl, but we get to see metaknights special moves... Im freakin out here!

Also, im overjoyed to see there are no stupid ''diagonal'' b moves or something like I saw threads suggesting there should be. Thats just dumb, im glad he kept it 4 special moves per char like melee

Heck yeah all of MK's special moves?

From what I can see his cape looks like it avoid attacks but can't reflect them.

I bet that Mach Tornado will make his recovery even more amazing than it already is. :p

It reminds me of mario's tornado and how it can be used to recover if you button mash the B buttong. Maybe Mach Tornado will work the same way??

Wow, what a brilliant way to post a necessary yet boring update... Use Meta Knight as a model! :O His moves look great.

Not only did Sakurai give us a two for one on this particular update, but it was also a double update today. I can get used to this!

Double Update Tuesday anyone? He should really start to do that...

Anyway, yay! I'm going to be using MetaKnight as one of my mains so I'm glad I finally got to see his Special Moves. He's sort of like a Marth and a Fox mixed into one! He's got the reflector, he has the float/horizontal recovery, he can fly, and he has his Up+B. I think he's going to be insane when it comes to going against him.

Can't wait to use him!

Am I the only one that isn't very excited about this update? I'd rather learn about their moves from actually playing them instead of just hearing about them. It ruins the feeling when the game actually does come out.

Not to be rude or anything but if you don't want to be spoiled Don't go do the Smash Dojo let alone the Brawl section of of Smashboards.

Anyway they're just screenshots; we really have no idea how they're going to look and react in actual gameplay; So seeing screenshots really doesn't effect me as much.

Well stop going to the site. This isn't the first time that we've had move updates, and this isn't even a true move update. (The mechanics of the moves were not mentioned, and thus we don't know how some of them work) If you want to have everything stay fresh to you, you really should not go to the Dojo. =/

Awesome! It was brilliant to take what could have been a boring-"Banana Peel" level update,and make it awesome by using Meta Kninght for it!

After seeing this update, I'm thinking of making Metaknight my secondary. About charging up special attacks, is everyone going to be able to do that for specific moves? For example, if you charge up Mario's Fireball move, it'll have more damage and stun? Any ideas?

To those who asked: no, you can not charge special moves in Melee. But is this Melee? :urg:
Sakurai mentioned that we should try doing special moves in air, does this mean that we'll be getting a new special moves set entirely, just for arial combat? Or is Sakurai just making sure we know we can perform special moves in the air? XD

I enjoyed this update, I think it's funny that Sakurai displays Metaknight's special moves in a How to Play update xD. Not as modest as we think ;)

Also, why isn't this in the DOJO Updates Forum? o.O

I was just wondering, geez. lol.

I think he was just saying that they could be helpful in the air... like you wouldn't expect an OverB to help you recover... so kinda fool around and see what helps. I'm guessing. lol.

Even in melee, some special moves are diferent when done in the air ( I.e. kirby's hammer )

Yeah, I remembered this as soon as I clicked "Submit Reply".
Also C. Falcon, Ganondorf, and other moves that are used to gain height, sort of change.
Well, off to school then. >.>

Which is the only reason I have to check the updates in the morning :(
