I'm pretty sure it works with both systems, but then again I don't own a ps3.

It is control stick to jump, it has to be very fast. Just practice it for a while with the way I did.

You should definitely try new things. It never hurts to do so. For example, even tho my friend always uses the y to jump he can't do the low lhdl and I told him/showed him how to.

Wrong! It does hurt a lot! My left thumb went through a lot of pain (because I was never really used to jump with Control Stick). But it was well worth it to suffer that pain, I got used to it and it never hurt ever again (it was like a work out for my thumb :awesome:).

Jokes a part, definitely try new things OP. Even if they might ache just a little bit. ;)
