Also, I noticed that at the very beginning, you fired Fox's laser straight through Falcon. Can I assume there's a small no-hit zone between Fox and the gun?

It's just because fox is moving left. I press b when he's still on the right of falcon but it looks like it goes through him. It's really easy to do, I was just messing around (this was like the 10 millionth try). You can get it to look even more ridiculous than that.
