Ness only starred in one game, the one in the NES Mother was named Ninten.

But I still agree. It makes no virtual sense to boot Ness for someone only one country has heard of. This might go down as the second mistake Sakurai's ever made (the first being the Samus/Zamus transformation, which I've ... sort of comes to terms with. Still not happy about it. I won't forget the death of Ness, though).

We better get something GOOD tomorrow. Playable Flint would almost, ALMOST make up for this blasphemy.

I think I might take Ness to my second most played in Melee this weekend to show my support.

Uh, nothing against Flint or anything, but your logic is a bit flawed. You complain about Ness being booted for someone only one country has heard of (unless you're a huge fan of the Mother series who follows the stuff on Starmen.net or a similar site), yet you want them to add in a character who is only more well-known because of a black-and-white appearance video? Oi vey.

But yeah, I'm still going with the "Lucas is Ness's Luigi," mostly because there are noticeable variations (not just improvements) to Lucas's known moveset, and because I'd like to think that Ness has gained enough of a following through Smash Brothers to be kept in and tweaked. And despite their noticeable similarities, they have totally different backgrounds and are therefore potentially separate characters, so long as Sakurai tries to make them separate, if he does put Ness back in.

Read what you quoted. My point still stands.

Also Captain Falcon and Jigglypuff arent really in danger. They are only unconfirmed due to them by unlockables in 64. No unlockable characters (ever) have been confirmed. Ness is only getting kicked out because he's from Earthbound, and anything relating to Earthbound is destined to end in tragedy.
Then explain how Ness and Captain Falcon, both of which were unlockable in 64, were confirmed early in Melee's life, as default characters for that matter.

You know.. I was never very fond of ness, nor did I use him too often. But I think it is wrong to get rid of one of the original 12.. seriously.. I'm really really starting to worry about Captain Falcon and Falco now.. Falco for the sake of clones and CF because they appear to have x'd one of the originals. I just don't get it.. look at Lucas... he looked like an a$$hole. period

Hmm...

The Japanese and English site very clearly suggest that it's "up until now" that Ness has been in Brawl, meaning that Ness won't return.
HOWEVER, the fact that they took the time to literally Luigify Lucas (new A-moveset, different B, same ^B but slightly different, slightly different >B, same VB...) implies to me that Ness might still be around.

There was room for Mario and Luigi in melee without people calling them too much of clones, and Ness and Lucas seem to have the ability to share the same kind of relationship.
Have you ever played Ness in Melee? Thankgod that they did alter his moves otherwise Lucas would suck as much as Ness does in Melee. I don't think it imply's that Ness might still be around, though it does tell me that Sakurai realized his mistake of making Ness so god awful in Melee.

Hmmm, I dunno. It sounds like his out, but I can hope.

If Lucas was ment to replace ness, then why make him so diffrent.
Also, if he was a replacement, why compare all his moves in detail to that of Nesses if hes not even in the game anyway.

I know its unlikely but...a man can hope..........a man can hope :(

I'm actually rather glad Ness was deconfirmed. I never like the character much, anyhow (he's my least favourite character in SSB64), plus it was fairly obvious from the time that Lucas was announce that he'd be replacing Ness. It still boggles the mind how people might have thought otherwise.

Meh, either way, another reason I'm glad Ness is gone is that it substantially boosts Claus' own chances of making it into Brawl as a second MOTHER rep. Claus is my second most wanted character in terms of characters that have a fairly good chance of making it in.

As far as I know, Ness wasn't really supposed to be in the game, it was all due to lack of time.

Even though I liked him, Lucas looks and (hopefully) works better.

It seems like Ness MAY be gone, but he can easily stay. Why? Moveset. We now know that standard attacks are different, so they won't be clones. What about special attacks? Everything's the same except for the PK Flash/Freeze (hehe, flash freeze) thing. What some don't know is that Ness never HAD those moves. He had things like PK Rockin' and PK Favorite Thing. If his own special moves were incorporated with the already different collection of standard moves, Ness is set. What scares me, though, is that Lucas was supposed to replace Ness in SSBM, but Mother 3 for the N64 got canceled. Now that Mother 3 came out for the GBA in 2006, and Lucas is in, well...
I think this may be true. We shouldn't say Ness is deconfirmed yet, but we should get it through our minds that his inclusion isn't probable at the moment. I would miss the bat and yo-yo, fortunately we always still have melee and smash 64. Now if only smash 64 would come to virtual console....

I have feeling that Ness will be reincarnated to be more of a 'melee' type fighter rather than the Psychic fighter that he was in melee. A few people have pointed out that Ness' old move set was taking a few of Paula's specials. Perhaps, we will see Ness return with more 'children's weapons' such as the Bat, Yo-yo, Slingshot. I prefer Claus, but a newly made Ness would be pleasant.

To this day, I still have no clue who Claus is, or what he even looks like.

"While he is timid in nature, he fights splendidly. Is it possible he can surpass even Ness?!"

This statement makes so much more sense now.

I'm not a fan of the Mother series which is why I don't care about Lucas. So, while I don't use Ness or really care about him, it sucks to see him die. A moment of silence for our dearly departed. I'd hope to see Ness as a costume at the least.

I suppose this is what he meant when he said not all characters would return. And we thought it would be based on usefullness (Ice Climbers) lol. In a way it should boost Falco's chances.

Its a bit of a shame really to see Ness get knocked away like this BUT i am still having some hope for having 'alt' versions of characters.

Yes this can be done though :) Pretty damm well too. Lemme explain

Take Mortal Kombat Armageddon, in there there is about just over 60 characters, most with costumes. However in that some move sets are shared between characters (Johnny cage and Liu Kang for a start). What im getting at is that a new model could be made BUT the move set could be kept intact.

For example:
Lucas/Ness
Sonic/Shadow
Peach/Daisy
Mario/Dr Mario
Pikachu/Pichu
Male Poke Trainer/Female Poke Trainer

Yeah I think ive gotten the idea across XD

I might want to point out here that in the game, Ness didn't even HAVE those particular moves, he had a different set of PK attacks. Perhaps we may see his return with the set of moves he actually learns in game, perhaps? The trophy even acknowledges he might have learned them from Paula after the fact .

Sigh, it needs to become common knowledge that Jigglypuff is in Brawl...

David Hayter accidentally confirmed her in an interview without realizing it. He used her as an example of "a Brawl character he would like to beat up most." And guess what? He had already done the English Snake codecs for EVERY character in the game by then. Which means he is one of the few who knows all the characters in Brawl, and now we know he made a Jigglypuff codec...

I was about to say that, AJ.

Ness has only become significant in my current Smash situation, because my friend uses him as his 2nd character now. But man, it's sad to see him go. Though, I believe that he still has a chance, y'know. It's just like Fox and Falco, same moves, just different effects.

Yeah, Bli33ard. Only time will tell. I think Sakurai is just psyching us out for this. If you ask me only clones are getting the boot. I did enjoy using Ness, but it didn't really FEEL like him with his special attacks. I wanted the moves he learns in game.

I believe we should all hold a virtual séance and bring Ness back from the other side.

Or we can have an over-the-internet candle-light vigil.

I'll go out and light a "madre de guadalupe" candle-in-a-tall-glass with a cross made of a couple of thick twigs out on my sidewalk with a picture of Ness next to it.

I'll post pictures of it online. We'll start a virtual vigil for him....Oh Ness, comeback!

i just looked it up
http://youtube.com/watch?v=vmxj-cly1Dk&feature=dir#
seems like it's like the luigi, where he is just thinking smash, not brawl in particular.
not that i think purin isn't in, just this only supports it, not confirms.
Also seems like he was just nameing random Pokemon he knew of, which scares me that he didn't mention Mewtwo...in case he actually was nameing actual Brawl characters...

I'd rather not see him at all than see him as an AT. That would be terrible.... no character should go from playable to AT or Pokeball... except Pichu. I really don't care what happens to Pichu. But Ness was a fun character and one of the original 12...
Pichu could still appear as an alternate costume to Pikachu.

This just doesn't make sense!

The kirby roster tripled with the inclusion of metaknight and dedede... so why would Sakurai cut the most recognizable earthbound character for americans?! don't get me wrong, I think it's fantastic that Lucas is in but it just seems like a slap in the face to us american gamers.

I doubt we'll have one mother rep so let's cross our fingers for Claus or Flint. The chances for them have definitely risen. Sad day indeed....

Virtual console Mother 3, or release it for the DS, anything...Lucas dosen't have to be Japan only forever.

What I always found odd was Sakuri himself said there would be no 'certain country only' characters (or something along those lines) like Marth and Roy were in Melee, yet he goes back on his words by adding Lucas, which was a Japan only character. If he lied about that, lets hope he lied about some things that might actually be usefull, like more than 40 characters, or more than 2-3 3rd party characters. 6+ 3rd party characters for the win!

Watch, Sakurai is playing mindgames and Ness will be announced tomorrow :)

But if not, I shall mourn the loss of a good friend of mine. Let's hope Lucas can fill the Ness gap.

Also, for all you people that think he sucked in Melee, that's just opinion. He is my 2nd main and I love him, and think PK Thunder is the best Up-B.

Even though Lucas' moves are nigh-identical to the ones Ness had? (Note: PK Freeze may not be TOTALLY identical, but it builds up and launches in exactly the same manner)

Yeah. His moves seem to have been buffed too, from the SS, PK thunder's range looks VERY long. I really don't think Ness has a change of making it now.
