Boy, do I have a story to tell you guys. Sit back and relax, because this is going to be a doozy:

My family and I recently moved back to our home state of Massachusetts, from California. We lived around Fresno, which is notorious for high crime rates and drug problems.

My mother's license expired this year, so she had to go to the RMV today to get a reciprocal license. This is when they take your out-of-state license and run it through a machine, to exchange it for a new in-state license.

A man at the front desk was especially rude to her, often not paying attention. He asked a woman nearby about her situation (using vague details), and subsequently gave her a form to fill out. About an hour later, she was called in, only to be informed that it was the wrong form. They started to copy the information onto the new sheet, but they needed proof of ID.

She showed them her California driver's license and her old Massachusetts license. They claimed to need proof of address, so she showed them her social security card. Again, they need more proof. They get the registry to our car (which we bought locally), and things appear to be running smoothly.

Then, it happened.

When they ran her California license through the machine, she appeared as a "high-risk" 10. This means that she was categorized as a possible domestic terrorist. It was also the first time they had ever seen such a thing, so everyone was shaken up.

My mother is 51 years old, is employed at a small bank as controller of accounting, and makes around $85,000 a year. This is not the kind of woman you normally associate with terrorism.

To confirm, they ran the license through a different machine, and everything came up fine. A temporary license was issued to her, though the employees were still a bit scared. They forgot to give her her eye exam, too.

The only explanation I can come up with is our three-year stay in a high-crime area, but even then, that's no excuse for stupid screw-ups like this.

Go figure it happening at a DMV.

The one nearest my house has, on a few occasions, had people sit and wait about 2-3 hours on a driving test when they knew there wasn't a driver there that day.

It takes about 4 hours to go through and get a state ID.

Every single person in that building needs to be fired.

[The one that's a little farther away does everything in about 30 minutes!]

I've heard of a few people trying to fly that had the same type of situation happen to them, due to a name error or something.

Actually, I've heard more than a few. :x

Doesn't mean someone didn't muck up and hit the wrong key on something ;)

As far as I know, there's no Joan MacIntyre on the terror watch list.

Ah, but she could in fact be Jon McIntry, bitter Irish Republican Army ex-patriate, here to serve an especially bitter term at Brown. With bitterness.

Actually, thats EXACTLY the kind of person that would be suspected of terrorism, regardless, its an amusing screwup XD

DMV's are notoriously like this. Of course, pretty much ALL bureaucratic offices like this, just the DMV is especially known for incompetent workers. Surprisingly, the DMV near me in Omaha was pretty good about getting me my learner's permit. I haven't taken the driving test though. About 2/3 of a month left! Might post later if there's a fluke

DMV really sucks for that, making you wait all day long just for something so simple. But yeah, it would suck if they arrested and questioned your mom that would really be as dumb as $#*@
