Hi guys!

You dont know me and I can pretty much assure you all that I've never met any of you before. So I'll try my best to give a good first impression. No easy feat when trying to promote the art of Lock Picking.

The first hurdle is ignorance. Sometimes when I tell people I am into the hobby of Lockpicking, I see a flash of "Now why the freak would you wanna know how to pick locks?" cascade over the face of the person I'm talking to. Fair enough too.

First of all, please let me emphasise the fact that there is an unwritten code amongst the more ethical and morallistic lock pickers out there that goes as follows.

1) If you dont own the lock, you dont pick the lock. You dont even think about it.
2) If you dont have permission to pick the lock, again, you dont even think about it.

Two simple, easy rules that prevent me from breaking the law.
I buy all my padlocks and have a small collection of about 20 at home right now. I've never been to the hardware store so much in my life since discovering this hobby.

So why do it, Dour?
Lockpicking is an art. It requires the right touch, the right information being sent and recieved from your brain to your hands and into the lock, the keyway/cylinder, the pins and back again. It requires deft touch and reactions. Its one huge brain testing puzzle. Thats why I do it. Its a challenge and it looks cool when you can do it. When you cant, you look like a real idiot. Been there, done that haha.

So why am I here to talk to you about it?
On the off chance some of you might actually have an interest. Maybe some of you might wish to learn how, or at least see it done. Maybe you could experience the satisfaction of cracking open an Abus or Lockwood high security padlock in the near future. Who knows. I'm just chucking my hobby out there for others in an attempt to generate interest and maybe make some more friends.

If you are by any chance interested, please, dont hesitate, visit my Youtube channel that I strictly use for Vlogging my LockPicking exploits. There are some funny video's in there and plenty of Tutorials linked for your convenience on How To pick locks. I learnt from some masters, and they are constantly referred to and conveniently linked in my video descriptions for you.

My Youtube channel is http://www.youtube.com/ModeraDour

I sincerely hope I get some interest out of you and you check it out. I know you'll be at least mildly satisfied.

Have fun and stay safe guys. If any of you wish to contact me via email, then by all means help yourself. It can be found on my channel.

By all means, discuss your thoughts regarding my hobby and ask any questions you want.

I tried it. It's hard as hell.

You really just need to buy a bunch of a locks and practice over and over.

I always thought lock picking was interesting. Never cared to actually learn it. Would if I knew someone IRL to help me. Heh. Most I can do(which isn't even lock picking)is get into my house with a credit card type of object.

I thought it'd be a fun thing to learn, but I never bothered to start it. Maybe later

It's now official, I'm going to do this. Any help or advice from you is appreciated on how I should get started.

Also, why are some Broomers light green and others the original darker green.

I occasionally muck around with lock picking. Its a great way to improve manual dexterity.

Does anybody know where to pick up a half decent torque wrench?
I am using a bent screwdriver right now...

lol I was going to make a reference to a certain female character and her unlocking abilities.

Well I hope you use this talent to do good things.

"Jill Here is a lockpick it might be handy if you the master of unlocking take it with you."

my highschool buddy neale was a lockpick, it was pretty badass. all i remember was that he started buying and tooling with practice locks of all kinds.

although this is a universally awesome topic, doesn't this look like one elaborate youtube advertisement?

Haha, indeed it does, considering it's his only post and all.
But GAWD, is this interesting. I wouldn't mind being able to learn how.

Me and a buddy know how to do real simple lock picking..

Like there was this lock that his sister used.. a real small one only like one... tumbler? Is that what its called?

Well we found a binder clip

And took one of those metal things that kinda looks like a U. Put one side in and picked it.. yeah.. I also picked this file cabinet my sister has at her house with a paper clip.. I would like to know how to pick locks like that though. Maybe I'll get into it more one day.

Correct. This is how I improve on a daily basis. Personally, I'm no-where near where i wanna be with this. But I'm getting there.

Okay, this is a good question. You'll need tools and locks. Tools are the harder of the two to acquire but still easy. there are many lock picking sites available to order picks and tools from. I will recommend http://www.Southord.com because they were very good to me and provided the best feedback and customer service out of the three I tested. Your choice of pick sets are completely a personal choice, but i recommend a 20piece set to begin with as this will provide you a medium to large range of lock picking targets while not breaking the budget.

I was interested, then I saw a Youtube vid on bumbkeys. I thought that was hella cool.
Bumping is a highly effective means of opening a lock, however there is no finess or art to it, and its overly easy. Theres no challenge to it once you know how. Lock Picking on the other hand can keep you entertained for a lifetime.

I have always wanted to give it a shot.
Then get cracking. There is Nothing stopping you. Its a hobby that doesnt break the budget and is accessable to anyone with a puzzle oriented mind and patience.

Interesting choice for a Tension wrench or Torque wrench as you call it (Not uncommon)
I would find ANY used Car wiper insert. These are made of a strong strip of metal perfectly malluable so you can bend it into a perfect L shape using a pair of pliers. Really easy and wiper blade inserts are cheap to buy if you cant get second hand ones. These are often of better quality than the commercially made varieties you purchase online. Trust me on this.

To Tom and Hardcore : Shame on you... Ye of little faith. It IS shameless advertising, but its also something Im actually passionate about and intend on following up here with you guys as much as is required. I will not lie to you. Im too busy to regulate these forums (Which are marvellous by the way) but I do try to be as helpful and informative as I can and I dont get overly annoying. *Puppy eyes* Please dont destroy the thread haha.

If anyone has any further questions or comments, please continue the discussion. I'll try not to be so late in replying in future. I'll be completely honest with you guys, I've delivered this speel on multiple forums thus far, and none has been as inquisitive as this one. Some show curiosity, some show disdain (At first) and some show no interest at all. But this one has shown more interest than most. So thank you all and happy picking.

After looking into it more I would like to be able to do this. I'd have to find out if I could obtain any tool and if it is legal to have them in my state.

I'd like to practice this in class if I could though, it would be a lot cooler than continuously solving a Rubik's Cube..
