I'm having trouble hitting the multishine. I watched a few videos and all of them say how it's just a motion starting with x/y and dragging your thumb to b. Whenever I do that I always end up hitting a And doing a dair. Is it better to rapidly press Y/X and B?

There area several ways to do it, personally, (i claw so it might not apply to you), is I just press b with my thumb and y with my pointer. The way people usually do it doesn't work for me, but just practice and you should be able to do it, try to space your thumb so that you don't get close to the a button.

A lot of people, including me, like to think about the motion as B -> Y B -> Y B instead of B -> Y -> B -> Y -> B. The most important movement is how quickly you can move your finger from Y back to B.

I do claw, so this does apply to me. I guess I just need to practice it more.

2 cents: I used to claw and found that I would often input the shine too early after the jump and that in general i was pretty inconsistent with it. I stopped clawing and now multishine with my thumb going y>b. I'm further away from being frame perfect with it now but my doubleshines are a hell of a lot more consistent.

While you're in jumpsquat, you can hit A and it won't affect anything. I do X > A > B, dragging my thumb.

Plus, if I mess up the timing and one of the best moves in the game comes out, I'm not complaining :^)

Just make sure your motion from Y/X -> B is fast and pressing A won't be a problem.
Personally, I use B -> Y for mine, occasionally using the control stick because I feel more consistence with my first two shines, not to mention it's easier for me to shinegrab.

If that doesn't work for you, focus on going from B to Y and back in a rhythm, and speed it up or slow it down.
With enough trial, you'll find the timing, trust me.

I just slide my thumb from Y to B. Squid did a small video with visual and audio cues included. Check it out even though it might not apply to you if you use claw.

Yeah as some people here have already said, I just do a sort of slide from y->b. You will naturally hit a by accident first, but you will eventually get the timing down its really just a matter of practice. Personally I find claw to be super unnatural, but if it works for you its fine I suppose.
