Why would we ban OP custom moves and not OP default moves?
There is nothing so bad in Default moves (I also don't think there is anything bad with any Custom move, but I don't use those so often, so I can't really say anything if there are "OP" ones). Also, DM are obligatory, and you can set up which Custom move you want. Banning a Default move it's like taking out a part of the character itself. Banning a "normal" Custom is like taking out a possibility of the character. However, banning a OP custom move it's making that character more balanced in that regard... Making the game more fair.

This "war" is pretty dumb in my opinion. To keep things balanced, just ban OP custom moves. It's not hard to do it.
It isn't that simple. I have yet to play with customs and have not been in the discussion, but what would constitute as OP? What sort of threshold is set by the community to make something ban-able?

Default moves aren't obligatory when customs are turned on. And I don't see how defaults are any more a part of the character than customs are. Really though, if we're considering banning individual moves just for being "OP", Needle Storm should be first on the list....

Custom moves is the only thing that will keep sm4sh afloat in the long run and it's so obvious that I'd go ahead and accuse anyone against it to be conspiring against the sm4sh competitive scene to let it die faster.

Looking at the above posts, I think that's another reason EVO is so important.

It's because we broke melee so hard that they watered down the sequels. No matter what way you slice it. It sucks but they're still good games regardless. Just comes down to preference.
As a mod, careful how you state your opinion, especially given this is a board for one of those sequels. From this it coming off as "it's ultimately preference, but my opinion is objective."

Smash 4 is just innundated with people's useless opinions though and people want things to happen overnight by complaining but not doing anything. It's gonna take time to build up. Patience is needed here.
Agreed. The game is still being developed (if the Oct. 3 deadline is any indication, we still have another year), and it hasn't been a full year since it came out.

Honnestly what smash 4 needs is the new game hype to die down and for all the scrubs / pretend competitive players to stop playing so theres more quality over quantity in smash 4 players. I believe in the game though, Ive seen some matches that were fun to watch, even peaked my curiousity.
For the former reason, that's going to be tough. That said, hype is what helps keep games going, and telling people to stop playing is just asking for trouble. Plus, based on the on-going theme of this thread, it seems that those with quality are no better, if not worse, than the quantity.

I agree that people overstate their opinions, heck I remember when Brawl came out that I argued for a Neutral Skyworld (), but if people are interested in improving their game and helping out the community isn't that reason enough for them to stay? From what I can tell, the overall issue is respect which is something that players from multiple communities/games, both casual and competitive need to improve on.

You got me there. This doesn't need to devolve into a flame war and I am kind of baiting by stating my opinions as if they are facts.

Which is why Zero is a tool for asking "WHERES OUR MIOM EQUIVALENT" the game is still in it's infancy. Relax dude, or better yet, do something positive about it instead of whining on twitter.

Again, great point. Pleny of skilled players that have TERRIBLE attitudes. In all genres of smash. (This is where melee gets a lot of negative publicity.... but hell melee has always been about arrogance / trash talk since the get go... it builds hype)

I remember when Brawl came out and I publicly threatened sakurai / charged a dbz type attack for making zero suit samus acessible through the final smash ball... lmao.

I used to wait for japan time for sakurais update on the brawl website and promptly come back to smashboards and start huge wars. I am the KING of overstating opinions... and I have worked on that because it's not a good thing and leads to animosity, and fighting.. not real discussion. Although it was fun being the villan back in 2007-2008.

I still haven't played with customs as I don't have the time to unlock them and set them up and everything. But I do play a lot with friends and online and I have to say that the game IS good enough on it's own.

I haven't even played the game once yet. I went to a smash 4 weekly once and brought a melee setup and just took over one of the TVs at the loft lmao

I don't know about that. Regions that aren't all for customs (Florida) seem to be doing pretty well just like regions for customs, so times even better. Unless you mean the community will be too splintered.

Welp, I believe it's a more powerful attack with no oversight at all. Honestly, I've played with Customs once or twice (I am a little lazy to unlock everything) and can't say anything about any attack, but I heard about Kong Cyclone and Pikachu's Infinite Combo (it makes use of Thunder Wave and Meteor Quick-Attack).

I think my comment was not written well.
When I said "Default moves are obligatory", I don't mean you really have to use them (we have Custom moves for that, after all). What I really meant is that a Default Move constitutes a big part of the character. Customs also do, but CM are more like a way to add something to that character. Like, Doc's Super Jump (Up-B 2) gives him a better chance to get back to the stage. But, you will lose the Hitbox of that move in compensation. If we banned his Default Super Jump Punch (dumb example, I know), we would lose part of his moveset, leaving only two customs with no middle of the road. Also, no Default Special of any character is so good, giving no reason at all for banning said moves.
Banning a "OP" (just because it's not something ultra-powerful, it does not mean it cannot be used in a OP way; Pika's infinite combo is a example) move, however, makes up for a more balanced roster. This actually mess with my head in something; banning a OP custom also makes said character lose a possibility, leaving it with a disadvantage. I am pretty neutral; With or without customs, there is still time for researching. In my opinion, every Special is pretty balanced.

If default Monkey Flip were a custom, the Zero's of the world would be calling for a ban on all customs because of it.

My general opinion on banning customs is this: Does it make the character better than sheik? If not, don't ban. If yes, well, I'm happy Shiek has someone more than just a monkey to keep her company at the top. If it makes someone so significantly better that it makes other characters irrelevant, then yes, we can consider banning it.

Again, that is subjective. Where exactly will that threshold stand. So what if a character becomes top tier? Many characters you might say are irrelevant without customs too. I'm just saying it isn't so simple.

I'm not saying we shouldn't ban any moves (reminder that I have yet to play with them). But considering to ban moves because the community feels is too good just feels sort of lame for lack of better word. If someone can enlighten me on what is super broken at the moment I'd like to check out some vids for myself. A quick friendly reminder that I have personally seen many posters around here exaggerate how "broken" something is when it really isn't. Remember low-mid level play, everything is broken. Being good at the game against a low-mid level player is broken. Please keep this in mind.

…My point exactly? Were you trying to rebut me? Because I'm against banning customs, too. Sooooooo… we agree? **Puts up hand for high five*

Oh uh... half and half. I was just questioning the idea that banning something because it makes the character super omega godlk is not a great idea (in my opinion of course), but I don't know how we would actually determine that unless its painfully obvious as not all of us are pros. I would like to see a custom that does that if it exists as I just can't imagine something can do that without it being a bug or glitch (in which it should be banned). Otherwise for sure I'd like all customs there because the idea of custom moves is cool.

What most people disagree with that I've seen, and I can't really explain why I feel this way, is that I am in the camp of either have all of them on or have none at all. I know many people are against that sort of thinking. Maybe I'm weird. o_O

Edit: Almost left you hanging, high five received!

This entire discussion is rather silly. Lets use the Sheik example- if Sheik had default bouncing fish, needles, and vanish as customs instead, we would ban them because they make her the best character in the game.

If airbender DK were default, he would be treated like any other annoying-ass top tier. People would complain, but they would adapt and learn the MU. Frankly, I think it all stems from the way customs are presented: like something special and different that you have to put extra effort into getting, as well as being presented alongside equipment. If customs for the entire cast were treated like Mii moves, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Basically.... Custom moves are totally arbitrary.

I think we just need two official rulesets.

One for cutsoms.
One for non customs.

Use them both for tourneys.

Of course I doubt this would happen but....

In theory it sounds fine, but it's a TO's nightmare.

Imagine having to run : Single (customs on) Singles (customs off) Double (customs on) doubles (customs off) not to mention melee singles / doubles if applicable.

I think smash 4's greatest weakness is trying to be like melee / smash 64 competitive (No items, neutral stages, counterpicks) when it's designed counter intuitively to this format.

The moment the community will agree on something, DLC will happen. Patches will happen.

Really this game needs to develop into something on it's own. We are trying to hard to regulate something when the plain and simple truth is this game is designed so as to limit the ammount of control the competitive community can enforce, by adding characters and nerfing / buffing characters every couple of months. The fact that Diddy was nerfed because all these people were crying is the best example, even if he was op, given time people would have found a counter to Diddy which makes the game exciting... instead of just "Downthrow combos to up air so... NERF..."

If Melee was patchable fox would have been mega nerfed, and we'd see nothing but jigglypuff players and the game would be dead. Despite fox/falco being very powerful, the game has a sense of balance where they are fast fallers and can be combo'd to death by most of the cast once they get a hit. I've beaten many decent level foxes with pichu just because I can get the grab / chainthrow with him. Then uthrow - usmash kills... and this is pichu a little emo rat who hurts himself beating the top tier character.

Melee achieved balance OVER TIME, for awhile it was thought a good marth / shiek was unbeatable and peach was only an average character.

What I'm saying is that a patchable / ever changing smash bros is an absolute nightmare to have a universal ruleset for, and I'm very concerned for smash 4's competitive future... but I do have hope. I really hope the patches stop and the game can take it's time, over the next 3-4 years to develop an interesting meta game instead of players thinking meta game happens OVERNIGHT.

Stop. If you have nothing nice or informative to say about smash 4 don't say anything at all.

If you think this game is garbage, explain why at the very least. You can NOT like something and still express yourself in a positive and helpful way.

At least in the smash 4 section. I don't want flame wars in this thread, and you are baiting.

Where can I explain why I hate Smash 4 then?

You do know you can't improve something or make people aware that something is bad if there are moderators and site regulations that punish people for criticizing.

Why do you feel the need to spread hate for smash 4? If you don't like it it's quite easy to not comment.... no need to be negative.

FYI there's a thread in the melee section titled "Why the hate on smash 4?" You should post your opinions (without being a **** about it) in that thread.

This isn't the brawl days dude, we had a legit reason to hate brawl because it almost murdered competitive melee. Smash 4 is not a threat to melee, so the hatred is unjustified... btw I'm also of the opinion that melee is a better competitive game

Ok so criticizing (which is something I was going to do) something is a negative thing?

I'll just say this. Smash 4 is not enjoyable for me because defense and reacting to when ur opponent throws out an attack is how you win in this game.

Critisism, as well as enouragement can be either positive or negative depending on your choice of words, or in a conversation even your tone of voice.

For example :

I hate smash 4, this is a trash game only scrubs play smash 4 - Negative critisicm.

I don't enjoy smash 4, it's overly defensive and too slow. I wish they didn't take out all the tech skill from melee - positive critisicm

or with encouragement :

Good thing you're on a diet, you're a fatass and should really learn to stop being a pig. - Negative

Good thing you're on a diet, you're going to feel so much better, I support you! - Positive.

**

I hate to say it but if you don't understand these basic concepts you're a bit of an idiot and I feel sorry for you.

I don't think you're that stupid though, I think you just like baiting people into flame wars and you're immature. I've been there so I understand.

Your right. I'm sorry

I've already discussed this with a mod.

I'm still glad this game wont be at Evo because the last thing I want is for it to get positive attention to it. If Sakurai sees how much people dislike the game maybe just maybe he will change his concept for how the characters will play against each other.

EDIT; When he designs the next smash. Cause I doubt he will change every character in a character patch for this game.

Hey good for you, takes a real man or woman to admit they were wrong. Again I've been there before (just google Dylan_tnga I was the biggest brawl brasher in this forum's history) so I'm not judging.

What do you mean this game won't be at evo? It's going to be at Evo 2015. I predict it won't make it to Evo 2016 due to the slow nature of the game & children like Zero representing it... but it's definitely there this year... did you not know that???

Thread is about rulesets and how no one can agree with them. Also whining apparently which is annoying. There have been many threads to discuss what you believe is negative about the game. They have come and go so opportunities were missed. I think the unpopular opinions thread is still up and talking. You can say what you don't like there I think (in a civil manner of course).

Anyways. In the end TO's run the show right? I hope they can have some big TO meeting and have a discussion with themselves and set some ground work. THEN ask for community feedback and go from there. Someone needs to set something first instead of waiting. Also, upcoming patch for Sm4sh, if the guys at Nintendo are watching us struggle at all, they will implement customs on CSS at the very least. If they do not do this, then I have no faith in them paying attention to the community.

Although... I don't think the Japan scene cares for customs so I've heard...
