With:
Olimar's new Up-B,
Shiek's new Side-B (the grenade),
Ivysaur being cut,
and ZSS' new Up-B,
all of the Special tether recoveries in Brawl (sans Link, Tlink, Lucas and Samus airgrab) are gone now.

Could this be because of the new ledge grab mechanic, which would make it abuseable to camp the ledge?
Or do you think this just may be coincidence?

It'd say coincidence.
Mind you we still have Link, Toon Link, and Lucas.

I keep seeing statements about Ivysaur and Squirtle being cut as if it's 100% guaranteed. What Psychic are you guys going to because mine is clearly not as good?

I think they're might be a new teather mechanic. Possibly something similar to Project M or perhaps they're changing it back to the Melee style.

Same reason as to why it's painfully obvious that Goku will never be in Smash.

It's called common sense.

EDIT: Okay to clarify sure it's still a POSSIBILITY, but a very, very, unlikely one at this point.

It's probable we aren't going to have seven seperate playable pokemon; eight of you wanted Mewtwo back as well. Also, we have a new water type which doesn't bode well for Squirtle ether.

I'm afraid they're goners. I really don't mind losing Squirtle, but Ivysaur was so unique. Ah well.

Regarding tethers, I never liked tether moves as an Up B which is why I'm happy Olimar and ZZS's up Bs were changed. On custom made stages, up couldn't cling to certain surfaces making Up B tethers useless.

I'm sure the optional tethers of Link, Samus, Toon Link, and ZZS will return though.

I wouldn't say tethers are completely gone. They are just no longer anyone's main form of recovery, which is a lot better for those characters.

I checked the website and I haven't seen one character with a tether grab, much less a tether recovery. At this point we should have seen it at least once. I'm almost certain they are out: try remembering back to the PotD that pointed out that he was changing ledge mechanics. I assume that Sakuri found that when they would/wouldn't grab the ledge seemed inconsistent. I also think that Sakurai is focusing more on spikes and edgeguarding, considering that lots of characters have at least one spike now (Megaman's D-air and Pikachu's Down-special change comes to mind) or have good edgeguarding options (Villager's tree and Shiek's new jumping kickflip thingy). Tethers totally bypass a lot of these spikes and edge guards.

They should of went with the Project: M way of tethers.

Tethers increase the mix up of for recovering enough that they should have stayed in.
Sakurai must not believe in fixing things that are broke other wise, if this happens to be true.

Are those tether moves gone, or simply alternate routes in customizable move sets?

Thats a possibility, but it seemed that most of the customizations stayed within the same ballpark of the original moves. Mario's fireballs could act diffrently, but they were still his fireballs. I doubt that the Jet boot recovery would just change to plasma whip.

I realised that in the new promotional screenshots you can see ZSS's plasma whip, but it still isn't shown being used as a grab or a recovery, might just be for her smashes now because in none of the screenshots does it become zigzagy like her side-b in Brawl.

Sshhhhh

Honestly the more I think about it the less I think (at least Ivysaur) is gone. And I was having a true crisis for a while. And it's not really a denial thing either

There is hope for the other starters, but they are getting close to massive pokemon over-representation. Mew2 is out for sure after Greninja, or at least I hope, way too many bipedal pokemon with practically the same neutral B.

I agree with this. I think this appeals to casual players, as someone would be irritated with getting used to the idea Up Specials propel them, well, upwards, only to then play a character who's up special doesn't make any sense.

Yeah, I think the best conclusion to draw is that Tether Recoveries that are special attacks are now replaced. I don't think we can draw any conclusions about more "easter-eggy" tethers like Link's clawshot or Lucas's rope snake.

Didn't Ice Climbers gain a small tether, the rope that nana throws out? Or am I just making things up?

Yea they did.

Sheik could still keep hers too. I don't think tethers are out they just won't be a characters primary recovery anymore which is great. that was so easy to gimp. Too bad they went and changed all the stuff with the ledges and took out most tethers.
