I'm having problems with the Mortar Slide. I can only execute it when attacking someone and only with the C Stick. Any suggestions on how I can do it with A up and without attacking someone?

Dash, dash attack with down on the C-stick, then press up and Z at the same time.
You don't have to hit the enemy (with the dash attack) if you do it this way.

You can also hold the controller my way (claw style), thumb on the C-strick, index finger at B/A, middle finger at Y/A, Ring finger at X, Pinky at Z. I can execute that move and a lot of other complex moves 95% of the time.

^I just tried that.......un...freakin'..believable lol. I could never hold the controller like that xD. I wonder...do you claw on Halo 2?

On topic: What i do is just C-stick for the up A smash. It seems rather impossible to do using the manual Up A. But that's just me >.>

No, I hold the controller normally for every other video game. I only hold it like that when playing melee or brawl. 5 fingers working together is better than 2.

I knew I forgot to tell you guys something. If you want to do the non-contact mortar slide with only the Analog stick and the A button, Tap jump must be off and the C stick must be set to anything but Smash(preferably Special). I find this way very easy for me.
