Nope, we're testing out the capcom style counterpicking system, the same system that we've been discussing and using in SRK online tournies (and the few offline ones), only we added the third clause (loser can change character and keep same stage, instead of random stage, in an attempt to give the loser an "out" where they dont have to worry about getting shafted by the stage if they so choose). We firmly believe in winner keeps same character, so that is what we're going to be testing.

There is no reason to test it, it's already been proven to be an effective style of counterpicking throughout Melee.

If it's not broken, why fix it?

Because Melee =/= Brawl, the sooner you start realizing this, the better off you will be.

I might have to check out this tournament live and see whats going on.

The counterpicking style has NOTHING to do with gameplay, so it can be applied to Brawl.

And this was Evo's rule last year and will stand regardless of items or not.

After the stage has been selected by the losing player, the winner of the previous game may change characters, but has to pick first.

Actually some people in the backroom have shown interest in trying out this style of counterpicking, but I had no idea it was from other fighters! If people are really resistant to the idea, then why not only apply it to the items tournament?

In all honesty, that style of counterpicking is quite interesting. I may see if some people I know will be up for a side tournament with those rules at the next tournament I go to. Although, a HUGE part of the Smash metagame is counterpicking characters, so eliminating that could functionally change how the game is played much more than you could imagine ^_^''

and like its been mentioned over and over again there is two tournament items on and off
so come out and play in the non item one

so be a good community and help support it.

Look, we're not trying to flame you guys. We're making sure that you guys are running this right.

If you guys are testing, its fine. Test with the Items tourney along with the counterpicking rules. At least gives us a NORMAL tournament that runs normally.

Please understand that if you're running a tournament, you've got to run it right. And we ARE a great community.

Actually, as far as I know, the counter picking method was only supposed to be run for the items-on tourney. I didn't mean to imply is was going to be used for the items off one, unless that is what lovepig had decided to do.

And secondly, there is a time and a place to test changes to the standard commonly used rules format, namely smaller local events, just like this one. Why should EVERY tournament need to adhere to some pre-defined ruleset? If you never give anything else a chance to even be TRIED at a tournament, how will you ever know if it works better or not?

I was unaware that those rules were used last year, I thought this was just an out of a blue thing and it seemed kinda weird.

I was under the impression that the items off tournament was running under generally accpeted rules. If it isn't, by all means, bring it up and I'll change it. My original intent was to run a tourney with community accepted rules and one with experimental rules for EVO. So, basically, the items off tourney's rules are up to you guys, cause I feel you guys would know it best, whereas the experimental tournament's rules will be up to Pimp Willy and Wizard, since the intent is for them to test drive the rules.

I don't give a **** what the back room says, this isn't melee. The back room should be deleted.

I am still trying to figure out why we allow any stage other than neutrals.

1st stage is either agreed upon, or made random. 2nd stage is picked by the loser. 3rd stage picked by loser of game 2.

No other system should be used

I plan on going to this tournament by the way lolool

Counterpick stages add variety to the game as well as more depth.

Just as an update/clarification,

We will be startin the items off tourney first (at 2), then the items on tourney will start near the end/after the items on tourney, which will depend how fast things run and how many people show up.

iankobe: Nice job making the tournament sound like a club. Yeah, you get into both tournaments free. But as I said, there has to be a limit of people we're letting in free, otherwise, the pot will be 0$. =(

Well, we should have about 4-6 setups, so we'll probably waive 4-6 entries. It'll most likely be on a first come, first serve basis.

LOL. How did even make this sound like a club...

It has always been that way but since this is such a special tournament, I asked.

Dude Phampy, you can just come to Alhambra and smash it with us on weekends. We smash all the time and since you live so close to us anyway.
