The video is actually a very beautiful example of the phenomenon (StoneColdBeast's experience is a good one as well, despite the wireframe business). The IC player was holding down for both hits. However, since they were in stun, Nana did not DI the second hit, even though Popo DIed it down. Because of this, Nana had a smaller horizontal component but a much larger vertical component. The horizontals were able to cancel out almost completely, so all that was left was the vertical, which is really funny-looking, coming from a knee.

Popo had very little upward motion on either hit, so his behavior is more intuitive. Knee is stronger than chop, so his flight path favors the knee.
