Ok you been shutting down most the threads on this page for too much clutter but the point of this board is to discuss topics at SSBB and to burn time. Now I have been on other boards (ESPN.com) for example and they do not regulate near as Nazi as you guys did. IMO you should limit thread closures to people lying about the game and to obscene topics, I don't see the reason to shut down other threads.

They shut down threads that lose sense of the core discussion and boil down into petty arguments, or discussions that get too heated and aren't actually going anywhere.

Do you want to just hand us out topics for us to post that meet your criteria becuase I don't even know what threads will be closed now and which ones won't?

Pretty much everything that could already be discussed Here gets closed to avoid multiple threads with the same theme. Also, pointless / absurd speculation generally gets closed too.

I honestly don't feel these boards are moderated enough.

I mean, take a look at some of these threads:

You've got thread titles that sound like official announcements, but are actually guessing games.

You've got about 6 threads about last nights update

You've got Billy-bob-joe's predictions for Brawl... because apparently, we all value Billy-bob-joe's opinion enough for him to make his own thread.

Discussion is nice, but what drives me nuts about these boards, is that you can say something, and if you're lucky, maybe 1 person will actually read it and respond, but most likey, people are too wrapped up in being heard about their opinions and observations, rather than listening.

1. thats not even a question.

2. I would wager a majority of threads they close because of people like you, wasting space and peoples time on this website. If you don't approve of how things are run here at smashboards, then wouldn't it be more beneficial to not only us, but for yourself as well to simply leave, instead of complaining about it? Now, in your defense, it is totally understandable to want to calmly talk out your difference of opinions, but I believe that a PM would be much more appropriate here. The other handful of threads that are closed are people who are to ignorant to use the search button, and don't post in previously created (of in some cases, the "official") topics.

1. Search if it's been discussed before.

2. Must be Brawl related, and must relate to the corresponding subforum.

3. Must encourage an actual discussion. I.E. no spam, opinions, useless statements.

4. Shouldn't start a flame-fest.

If you have a hard time deciding if it will be locked, then it probably will be. I honestly think that if you have a problem with the rules of this forum, you must have problems with just about every other forum that has at least some sort of moderation, because they're not all that different.

Mind you, since this doesn't relate to Brawl, and also doesn't fall under many other categories that a topic should fall under, this topic will be locked as well. Though, complaints aren't welcome to begin with. It's a privilege to use these boards, not a right, so if you don't like it, you should just leave.

They closed the thread debating whether Tails and Knuckles would be more popular then Sonic... that was a novel thread. They also closed the hilarious thread for reasons why Sakurai delayed brawl. Also novel in that it was a joke and it had over 100 posts by the time they closed it. BTW I didn't start either of those threads.

Well, I would think the Tails and Knuckles in Brawl would belong in the Character Discussion forum... though Tails is confirmed as an AT, so really... the thread had no point.

AND

I'm glad the delay thread was closed. Why? Becuase its title was: "EXACT reason why Brawl was delayed"

and it pissed me off that when I clicked on it, I got to see a guessing game of why Brawl was delayed... here I thought I was about to find out the EXACT reason... go figure...

If you're going to make a joke thread... call it a **** joke thread.

No, deleting threads is not a healthy solution. It causes several problems as I have observed on Zelda Universe Forums.

(1) -- Some people put a lot of time into their posts by either writing multiple paragraphs or just formatting it well. Locking the thread at least lets members go back and reference them as I sometimes do with locked threads.

(2) -- No one learns their lesson by deleting threads. By actually seeing the locked threads, more members are likely to get the message. When a thread just disappears, members assume random things and may even recreate the thread all while asking, "Where did the other one go?" It also gives the mods a chance to somewhat explain why the thread was locked.

(3) -- It can lead to serious censorship issues. Members may have a valid concern to bring up. If mods delete it, suddenly it establishes that mods obviously don't want the general public to know something. Mods do us a courtesy by merely locking threads. Over at Zelda Universe, not only are posts/threads completely deleted, mods will edit posts too.

Which is something Mic would never do because he's awesome.

He also has a sense of humor ;)

Its not hard for a mod to determine if a thread had a lot put into it, and make the call if it should be deleted or locked.

Stuff like:

Title: OMG, why was brawl delayed

Body: Disucss.
That can be deleted, and should be.

I think mods need to make a forum for smash-related goofing off. Yeah I know there's the pool thing, but 90% of that is OMG IM SO MAD AT MY MOM!!!!!! or people trying to make serious discussion threads with 13 year olds. It would clean up this forum and allow people to be creative and have fun (that's what forums are for, FUN).

1) As someone already said, you can take it to Forum Disputes if you have a problem with a mod's decision. That's why it's there. Calling him out in the Brawl threads does nothing to prove your case.

2) It's good to see at least one mod finally cracking down on all the pointless topics that are either repeats, topics without any sort of substance to back up the need to for a new topic, or topics that are just plain silly. Leaving a topic locked instead of deleting is a better decision, because the mods have the evidence to prove WHY it was locked in the first place. Honestly, they need more mods actively looking through and closing spam/worthless threads. Reporting spam posts doesn't get the job done quick enough...

3) Make topics that are WORTH reading, and there will be less closing. Speculations and opinions are fine but keep it confined to a SINGLE topic for reading instead of multiple topcis.

The joke threads have a place here because people get on here to burn time at jobs/school or just to have fun. That is the point of boards whether they are talking about College Football, NFL, Politics, games, etc. I expected this thread to be closed after my original post btw, shocked it is still open. I make threads sometimes but try to avoid it. However, I get to reading some good threads that I want to respond to and then go down to bottom and find out it is closed and I get dissappointed.

i dont think anyones debating those kind of threads...though i agree that a majority of closed threads should be shut down, though i have seen quite a few questionable closed threads.

closing threads makes people cautious as to what they post, and also hesitant to post a new thread because no one wants to see theirs get closed. but that's how it should be. one of the big problems i see is the front page being filled with stickies and then 20 locked threads..thats something that annoys me. not all threads that get started should be deleted, there are some dumb ones that one response ends the thread and those could stay, since they serve some sort of point. but any pointless threads that give birth to trolls should be deleted.

Exactly. They take their precious interwebz too seriously. In my opinion, as long as a thread presents something to talk about, and isn't a flamefest it should be allowed. If somethings in the wrong forum, don't just close it, move it. And something else I hate: mods definition of spam. Spam, to me, is AFGJDDJ&RL;GH+GB, advertising, or creating a topic that's on the first page. If it's something that may concern the Brawl boards, keep it here for Peetza's sake. Games involving Brawl are not MY definition of spam, nor is discussing Liquid Snakes chances of becoming an AT. And one more thing: if there's a thread discussing one big topic, other related topics should get their own threads too and not be locked. For example, I bet if someone posted a "Your Opinions of Brawl" topic, any time someone posts a topic regarding their opinions it would be locked because there's already a thread on opinions. That's stupid, because designating one giant topic to just...one thread makes opinions get washed away in a pool of replies.

I also have a bone to pick with the mods.

So many stupid, useless, ALREADY BEEN DONE threads are popping up.
All the mods do is close them. What they really should be doing is handing out infraction points instead of going "Use the search function next time" . Obviously it doesn't occur to these dumb thread-starters next time.

First off, I would say that it's worthwhile to have this thread here because people will actually read it and put in their $.02.

Second, I've always believed that the way to keep things clean would be to moderate posts more than threads (which would require giving infraction points). The #1 thing that inhibits intelligent discussion on the internet is the fact that so many people think that what they have to say is vastly more important than what anybody else does, even if somebody else is saying the same thing.

For a good example, go to one of the wavedash threads. Look at how many posts are discussing/countering points brought up by others compared to the number that praise/bash wavedashing, praise/bash wavedashers, or repeat the exact same points somebody else made without making any mention of those who have already said it or those who have countered it.

So my thoughts are that the mods should have a lighter hand on locking threads and a heavier hand on spam, and I do think that the best way to mod is worth having a thread about in the section that people actually read.

I don't see why my topic was closed, when half of the sh***y topics stay up for almost a week. You do a good job, just try a little harder!

Normally topics are locked if they irrelievent, spam or are a clone of another topic. But this is normally. Sometimes the mods will close topics they "feel" shouldn't be open despite the fact people can still discuss on the topic and it doesn't meet the other three things I said.

While things have been going pretty well, today was a joke

I shouldn't open my browser window and EVER have it look like this. To any mod reading this, at this point, it's probably not the members, but your policies. I think Mods need to actually keep topics open. I wouldn't doubt that's why so many members have under 500 post, let alone 200.

The reason there's so many with so low posts is because, suprisingly, when there was more Brawl info, people looked for a place to know more.

Well, I would think the Tails and Knuckles in Brawl would belong in the Character Discussion forum... though Tails is confirmed as an AT, so really... the thread had no point.
Must have missed the bit about Tails being an AT. But regardless, both Tails and Knuckles already have topics in char specific.

Funnily enough, that's roughly an idea that we have in the works, splitting General Brawl into 2 rooms, one for the more competative aspects, and one for the more casual. Things like the "why brawl was delayed" are honestly more suited for forum games.

I agree the mods needs to get off their high horse every now and then, and start showing some real initiative around here instead of just closing threads...

That's like complaining about cops charging speeders. "Who sticks to the speed limit anyway? Not me!"

But Mic does close alot of thread......he's like the Andrew Jackson of smash. Veto!
Heh, funnily enough, my uncles name is Andrew Jackson.

Anyway, as others have said before, if you have an issue, send a PM to the mod in question, or post in Forum Desputes. The only people who can see what goes on in there are the 4 admins and whoever makes a topic (you can only see yours) so if anyone wants to ask any more questions about this, fire me a PM. Also, if you've got any ideas, like the one about splitting Brawl Disc, check out the Questions and Suggestions topic stuck in the Pool Room.

Anyway, lunch break's over for me, so I'll see you lot this arvo after work. Cherio!
