MD/VA Summer circuit discussion

I know a lot of big events are going on this summer, but I think it would be a good idea to once again do the summer circuit. It turned out quite well last year. Summer is still months away, but it is best to begin planning now (if we even go through with it this year). This way we can confirm dates and begin hyping the events. From personal experience sometimes it can be hard to land a desirable date if I don't schedule a month or so in advance.

So some ideas I had:
  1. Do pools- so even those that lose all their matches can at least get their money's worth
  2. Payout to top 5- so more people can earn money and their is more competition for those who don't make grand finals
  3. Setup carpool list- so more players can make it to events and getting rides isn't so hectic of a process
  4. TO cooperation- so events run smoother and hopefully we can get done earlier.
  5. Have a theme for the circuit. An idea I thought might work was have a theme of "Return to Glory" with the opening and finals being Return to Glory 1 and 2 respectively. Under this theme we would concentrate on bringing back old smashers, building up the rusty ones, and just getting better in general. I would also enjoy seeing a MD vs VA and maybe even actual crew battles.
  6. Of course try to keep the venue fee at 5 dollars. With discounts to players who bring setups/wiis/tvs.

Although last weekend's UGZ went terribly slow, it was an overall good experience to everyone. Thus, pools would be a good idea.

I really like all of those ideas.

Pools are great, except when 2 other members of your crew are in the same pool. I understand that ATHF is a massive crew, but I train with BMX every other day on wifi.

I also think we should have like, main event matches.

For example:

NEO vs mikeHAZE: Battle for supremacy

or something along those lines.

That is really great. It would be good to do events were we invite big names from other regions to face our big names.

For a circuit I don't think training events really fit it but over the summer it would certainly be a good idea to do smashfest, training events, and such between circuit events.

Maybe we can also work on getting some sponsors so that for the finals we can have a good sized guaranteed pot.

I like the idea.

I would be willing to host another Five Guys event this summer (for the circuit) if the tourney I have planned for April turns out good and if I continue using that venue

I might end up doing monthly events at that venue anyways

Beta: I dont get why people cry about having there crewmates in the same pool, you enter the tourny to win. No matter who you have to play, you have to beat them. But thats just how i see it.

I personally have a problem with it because I go to tournaments for experience to fight people I don't normally play with. Usually within your crew is who you practice with, and that's why I wouldn't want to face them early in bracket or in pools.

What did you guys think of the Gaithersburg venue? I was wondering if the host that got that venue would be willing to try to schedule some days for that venue again.

I personally would like to continue a Summer Smash or two over the summer.

Hopefully as the TOs in the area get better at doing pools we will be able to avoid crewmates in the same pool or at least the ones that play all of the time.

Will you and SOVAman be able to help out with other events? I would like to see all the circuit TOs helping each other out.

Also, where are you all at? For the circuit we should try to have a venue in each area. So maybe an event in Silver Spring, VA, Baltimore, and Htown. That way we cater to each little pocket of players that are too lazy to drive.

Over the Summer, I'd have to talk to Herf, but I would like to go to more events and help out with other tournaments.

Also, I think doing food sales at the events, where possible, would be a good idea. It not only raises extra money but it keeps tourney players from leaving for extended periods of time.

We should try to get sponsors for these as well. I was thinking Buffalo wild wings would be good to try, along with five guys, chipolte, maybe a bank and a hotel. Also some local stores that are looking for cheap publicity might be willing to sponsor us.

This is an interesting idea.

Do you have any examples of where this has worked before? Other regions, maybe, or for other games.

I think the biggest hurdle in sponsorship would be selling the community to potential sponsors. But we could brainstorm...?

Well Sovaman is having a tournament at Five guys. I have a friend that says he knows the people who started Wild wings, not to mention tournament players always go there. It is really just a matter of selling the events. I think it would be easier to convince them with sponsoring a group of events rather than just one lone event.

Sponsors are something that is not going to happen at small events most likely

I guess you can try but it won't happen

Also Five Guys is just my venue not a sponsor

They want you to buy there food, and it's good food so I don't see why not

Yeah; I would agree with SOVAman on this one.

But as far as a "collection of events", maybe we could get sponsors for a season?

IDK. O:

You are thinking about 1 event being sponsored. There are 3 months in Summer. At the very least we could do 2 events per month. Heck we could start in May and end in late September which would add even more events. So now instead of sponsoring one event they are sponsoring 6+ with the guarantee of 20+ attends at each event.

Also I can't imagine asking for a whole lot. Every small amount added to the pot will help out. We don't need a 2000 dollar sponsorship. It would be great to have that be we have to be more realistic. 50-100 bucks isn't half bad for advertising. Maybe even more if we can do like after event dinners at our sponsors place.

Also a lot of local business are just looking to get the word out that they exist.

You never know until you try. You have to have the guts do ask. What is the worse that can happen? They say no and we run the events as usual.

You should still have a plan of action. It would be bad to ignore the possibility of sponsorship; it would be worse to throw it away due to piss-poor planning.

I will write a pre planned sponsorship contract. I have a lunch appointment with my lawyer so I could ask what he thinks. The one lawyer I talked to seemed to think trying to get sponsors was a good idea, but maybe he was just trying to get us to come back to him when we need contracts written up.

Yes, of course I will have a plan of action and I hope other TOs that are really interested in making this big will as well.

You need to remember to consider, "Will the other venues TOs are hosting at allow sponsors other then themselves?" For a community center it wouldn't be a problem but for some venues you really need to ask the venue owner themselves if it's ok.

Look at the only real sponsored event in the area so far, Pound 4. It was in a rented fairground space, not a lan center, not a restaurant, not a house so there was absolutely no problem with GPX and VGBootCamp sponsoring the event and providing Wii's and food.

Just pointing out that you will need to also make sure not only TO's are on board (but please ask TOs before sponsoring their events) but also that the venue owner doesn't mind having whatever sponsor you get. Getting a sponsor for the entire circuit could be a problem in general, not as much as a problem for individual events but only if you can guarantee enough people. Of course this will depend on the sponsor your looking for.

Planning for the actual circuit itself needs to be done first before considering sponsors.
