All right Marth people I needed to know some things on Marths playability online as I'm sure you know that online is a joke. Especially when you are trying to have a good match up online. The Brawl servers are absolutely horrible and forces you to somewhat make a huge change in your gameplay.

Playing online you first notice the button lag and the game lagging constantly. These two issues bring out some of the worst characteristics in Marth and in the players. Because marth has no projectiles and it is harder to make your moves come out right then and their, the players is forced to think ahead. Any player should be doing this online or offline but because of the lag the players have to think even harder. So, any smart player would think, how do I exploit lag to my advantage? And the smart answer would be abuse my fastest attacks and my characters online pros. Marth in general doesn't have a variety of fast non punishable attacks for online play, even though he is a fast character himself.

Dancing Blade being his most abused attack is perfect for online though. But can it compare to all of the other attacks that are dished at you? Marios fireball spam, with the lag on his side makes him a deadly plumber. Links projectile game, mixed in with button lag is one of the hardest camping games to get past. Snakes broken gameplay, with abused tilts, jabs and enough equipment to give you a migraine in the middle of a match is obviously a threat to recognize. MK godly move set which is self explanatory, but for those who don't know....A broken D-smash, a recovery that can gimp at any given moment, a tornado with enough power to grant MK a desirable offensive and defense game all by itself, and lets not forget his godly cape which grants him a free hit and infinte invincibility.

And I haven't even mentioned Falco,Olimar,R.O.B.,G&W,Wolf and so many others. The point is that Marth doesn't compare to these characters online in many ways. Even though he can hold his own, he just dosent come well prepared for a lagfest and projectile spam. So what can Marth do against these threats? Not only must you think ahead but your automatically at a disadvantage with lag. While you try to Duck and dodge with perscion and find an opening for a counter attack. Your opponent is mashing down that B button and giving you one He!! of a time. What do you do? And how do you gain any type of advantage while your at such a disadvantage? Please tell me cause I would like to know.

you're not use to playing online. I can control Marth about 80% of offline quality, if the connection is decent. There's a different timing for when you have to press the button, but you get use to it.

Oh don't get me wrong, Ive played online for some time Ever since brawl came out to be exact. Im just saying no matter how much you have control over him at this point its not 100% and because of that online is not Marths strong point period. He just isn't built for online.

Directly above you tipping a dair.
Since most characters get nerfed online (with a few "broken" exceptions) i think the best way to fix the problem is to take some time to see what online nerfs other characters besides marth get. Seeing how many ppl only use a few charcters, the knowedge will have to be pulled together collectively from those who main non-marths. The way i try and compensate for marths weaker status online is to play a "reaction" game instead of an "action" game. By this i mean, moe often than not i will wait for my oppontent to make a move before making mine. My reason for this is because the online lag (once u adjust to it) allows u more time to anticipate an attack and react accordingly. I came to this conclusion when i realized that it is practically impossible to use marth's counter because the lag makes it come out soo late and it leaves ur opponent time to wait out its active frames and react accordingly. Well...thats all I've got to offer as of yet.
