It's pretty usefull for edgeguarding fox and falco's up Bs and maybe some other characters, but that's about it. It can be used as a mindgame to make your opponent hesitate more often and it can break combos but you have to know your opponent is going to hit you. A poorly timed counter spells death for Marth so I'd use it very descretely.

Use it when your opponent becomes predictable. It'll shake them up a bit. It's a good mindgame.

That's what I thought. People thought that using the Counter sucks...

I just wanted to know what your opinions are. I usually always use it.

There's one way to use Marth's counter in an extremely effective way... The only problem is it's very hard to do and it will take you a lot of practice. Marth's counter can be used to stop the invincible SHLaser approach with falco. Time your counter so that you use it when falco shoots a laser when he's near you. It's easy to mess it up and fall for mindgames, so just dont overuse it...only use it when you know falco will be near you/planning on attacking. If you don't practice it i recommend not using it at all...it will mess you up big time

Thanks to Mew2King for that one!

as i always say, marth's counter is pretty underrated.
i assume it began at really old times, when people spammed counter and smarter people owned them, so they gave counter a reputation of 'noobish', noobish to be used at all.
the counter is most noticeably used versus space animals, falco in particular. besides jumping in with a counter to counter a laser and hit the falco hopefully off the stage (it has good knock back even at low %), i mainly use it to gimp the falco by countering his up b. often he has no choice but to firebird straight into you. after he gets hit (pretty far even in low % as i mentioned) it is good to quickly drop and double jump fair him so that he doesnt get tippered, then you can easily edgehog him. this makes gimping falco very easy.
that trick doesnt work as well vs fox because his firefox is much longer, but its still good when you are in tight positions trying to come down or to the edge

Counter is a great move to use to shake up a fight, or when your opponent has you stuck in a combo. Having trouble DIing out of a combo? Counter might just be able to help you escape.

I find that I can use counter when my friends get really predictable. I can tell when he's going to Uair me from below, so I can counter him. I wouldn't use it more than a couple times a match, but It's always great to be unpredictable.

It seems that whenever anyone uses counter (including me) you sort of get into a mindset, where you basically say to yourself "Oh yeah! I have a counter!" And then you'll use it a few times in a short period of time. I think the only really way to use it is to use it once, hit or miss, because it seems that whenever I counter, my opponent gets themself ready for the fact that I'm probably going to counter a few more times.

When you SPAM counter, it's a huge disadvantage on yourself. But It's a great move to randomly throw into your game, it can really mess some people up good :p

I typically use it when I'm above my opponent. If you get knocked up high,on your decent, use it right when your opponent tries to use an aerial attack. It works well against Jiggs, but don't use it too often.Substitute the counter for a spaced aerial.

I tend to avoid it in the beginning of the match but after observing my opponents general attack patterns it's pretty easy to incorporate it into your own strategy, but make sure it's used sparingly =P.

It also slows your fall, so it can be useful for waiting for the barrel when somebody slob picks Kongo Jungle 64, but this also means that it's unwise to use when in the air. It will often lead to your opponent missing you because he was incorporating your fall speed into his attack, and then all of a sudden you slow down. This has gotten me killed a couple of times.

Yeah, i've noticed that marth used it a lot on Pc Chris at MLG Dallas, so it's clearly a good option when being rushed by falco. Since Marth has a hard time covering below him like gimpy and others have already stated, using a counter when some1 is below u like a fox or even a ganondorf is very effective in getting back on the floor. 1 thing that i haven't quite tested yet is against peach's upb. Since it has so much priority i find that it's hard to edgegaurd when the opponent is right beneath the ledge. I can never really get the forward smash spacing completely or consistently. Using the counter would push the peach just far enough off the stage to set up for some easier edgegaurding i think. but that last part was just speculation.

Counter can be used against almost any character when edgeguarding, even a fellow Marth. What's funny is that if you're quick enough, you can grab the edge when they use their Dancing Blade to stop their momentum then just edgehop spike them when they use Dolphin Slash. It's also a great move to use when you know your opponent is going to edgehop something at you; just Counter that and they're as good as dead if they're playing as a fastfaller.
