I was playing as Marth against a cpu on Yoshi's STory and while he was falling I d-smashed him. When the hit connected he dropped and hit the stage, but when he fell it looked as if he was spiked. Can d-smash do that?

The stage killed him, CPUs are known for ridiculous SDI.

Elven probably has the best reason, the computer could have SDI'ed into the ground and stuffs.
You can CC a d-smash and fall, but I dunno if you can SDI from the air and then CC it as if you took the attack grounded. That sounds broken.

You'd just have to be a lowish damage and SDI then ASDI to crash into the ground.

Thats probably just a Crouch Cancel at mid-high percents...nothing unusual
