Hey Everybody,
So I consider myself a moderately-advanced SSB 64 player. I've modeled my technique from watching youtube videos of Isai. I play as Mario. I'm adept at the short hop down A air combo into a quick Z grab, but cannot figure out how Isai is able to pull off the down A air combo straight into Mario's up A flip-kick all in one short hop! This has really bothered me for the past few months to the point that I found this website and am now posting on it with a plea for assistance. To clarify what I am referring to , please view this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8P1XlxmXc4c

At approximately 1 min 30 seconds, Mario beautifully pulls off this combo successively to the point that falcon's shield breaks. It's truly a masterful work of art, if I may take the liberty to call smash 64 an art form.

If someone could give me some tips for pulling off this combo, or drills that I could practice to learn this technique I would be much appreciated. The problem I have when trying to pull off this combo is that the short hop does allows just enough time to pull off both moves, but when Mario lands, he lands on his head, and to my knowledge, there's no z canceling in that situation. Somehow Isai is able to pull this off in a short hop and I have no idea how he does it. It's really bugging me!

Glad that I found this place.

Thanks,
General

The key to doing short hop d-air to u-air with mario is to start the d-air as soon as you jump (You'll actually be moving UP as you do your d-air). The sooner you start the d-air, the more time you will have to squeeze in the u-air. Once you can get the u-air in, make sure you can z-cancel it

You can zcancel any a-move in the air

Keep practicing hitting that z

And play online and someone cool can help you learn

Jump
Down air
Up air + Z cancel (the timing is basically to do the up-air and z-cancel at the SAME time)

If you can't fit both in, it means you're not starting the Dair early enough. You need to dair immediately after jumping, then you can mash uair all you want.

This will take practice to perfect.

This, but also have to add it, I find it easier to slide my finger across the c > A buttons.

Also, it doesn't take skill to Drill > throw. It's actually a lot more annoying to play against those people because its just repetitive. Think of me spamming hadukens at you in Street Fighter....

Another important thing to note is that horizontal movement makes it much harder to do this properly.

I have trouble doing this too because my fingers aren't fast enough. Try doing it with Luigi first because his short hop is higher and for him its thus easier to do.

With Luigi you can short hop dair fastfall uair. Like others have said the key is doing the dair as soon as possible by sliding your thumb from the c button to a. I think you could also do this using R to do the aerial and it might be easier but I've never really tried that because I'm used to sliding.

hmmm... now that I think about it, shouldn't this section have a character-specific Sub topic??

12 sub-forums...even 12 threads seems a bit much. How about heavy, moderate and lightweight threads? At least that would clear up some confusion about how heavy who is, and it wouldn't take up too much space.

Having twelve threads each dedicated to each character would be good enough. I don't think it's worth having a complete section for Samus if only one or two people post there.
I would post there. She's so reliant on baiting, prediction and mindgames. Tech skill aside, her (or maybe DK/Luigi) are the hardest to play, so she's quite interesting. That aside, 12 threads seems a bit much...

Jake is definitely dropping Yoshi
well... once we do decide to make a guide for each character, there's your character thread for each character. That was what I meant.

The entire purpose of my last post was to say that a separate sub-forum for each character isn't a good idea at all due to the lack of people.
