As far as recommended anime go, the best ones that I've seen are Fullmetal Alchemist (both the original 2003 version and Brotherhood), Code Geass, and Death Note.

Ok TRJV here's a guide to watching the two FMA series:

Even though Brotherhood is a better series objectively, I'd watch the 2003 version first. This is because Brotherhood follows the original manga plot almost 100% faithfully, while FMA03 branches off into its own story halfway through. If you were to watch Brotherhood then 03, you may feel like 03 is just filler, and thus skippable. However, even with a different story, the 03 version is still amazing. Go 03 then Brotherhood so 03 won't feel like filler. Oh yeah, and each series has it's pros and cons as far as more tangible values go:

Brotherhood is more faithful to the source material, has better graphics, much more complete storyline, better soundtrack, and it's much funnier. However, it's too funny for some (although I don't feel that way personally), and people value it much more-so than 03 simply because it lacks the branching story (which is semi-unfair).

03 has a bit of a cliffhanger ending, has good but not great graphics, and it's not as funny. However, the story line does a better job at portraying tragedy and darkness, the character development is better, and if you watch it first it won't feel like filler (well, this could happen. It all depends on the person).
