What, you people want the same character in two different brackets with their only main difference being hairstyles?
Lucas is just fine. It doesn't have to be a world-renowned character. The character doesn't have to be an idiot who just runs around the world with reckless abandonment in their own game. They don't even have to be the main character. It just has to be a good character.

Oh, and to the people who mention any "Smash Bros. Tradition," there were two games. Two. Two occurrences a tradition does not make.

Really, I think this kills his chances. Why would Sakurai reveal Lucas first? In my opinion, that would be like revealing Peach before Mario, or DK before Diddy. Now, I'm an optimist even, I still think Nook has a chance, but hope for Ness is gone. It is unfortunate.
For me, this throws smash predicting into total chaos. No one is safe. IC return, Ness won't, no one is safe. NO ONE.

Seriously, people is rooting too much for Ness. He never was anything special, since Lucas can do anything Ness could. He is just a facelift like Command Fox or Twilight Link, since all the MOTHER main characters fall in the same model of character (similar abilities, stats, body, weapons...).

But I think most people is arguing before even document themselves properly about Lucas.

the point of smash was to get MOST of the CLASSIC NINTENDO CHARATERS to fight each other. its based off the old age question, "what would happen if ________ fought ______" like what if disney made an rpg with square enix(kingdom hearts, final fantasy + mikey mouse), what if sonic and mario, what if street fighter capcom, or whatever. you should get what im saying. so, with two similar charaters, everyone should wonder, with is ness fought lucas? if lucas in ss64, then ness would be the on being confirmed now. no one else is even repping earth bound, so they cant take him out, HE IS EARTHBOUD.

you people need to stop being to naive and look at the big picture.

marths is returning beside ike, maybe even roy. marth IS fire emblem and ike is the new popular character. jiggs is returning because shes part of what pokemon is and forever be in history. sheik is retuning because she is one forth of possibly the greatest zelda game ever.

nintendo is going to be more important than any 3rd party with this game, so before you start questioning about more 3rd parties or replacemnts, jsut think about WHAT NINTENDO WAS BACK THEN, ONCE YOUVE DONE THAT, THINK ABOUT WHAT IT IS NOW, then you can decide for yourself whos going where and whos doign what.

As clones. Roy being a worthless Marth, way less important franchise-wise than Marth and even from an unreleased game. They could at least add fire to Roy, and make him a bit different aesthetically.

And not all the FE characters are the same. Marth-Ike-Sigurd-Ephraim-Eirika for example, different builds, styles, appareances, clothes, personalities, etc.

Well, I dunno about ALL, but I actually started to like Ness after playing Earthbound... awesome game, btw.

After playing Earthbound I actually got a little disgusted by Ness. It seems like all other Party members besides him (Paula, Paula, Paula) did all of the work and he got credit for it.

Personally I'd like to see Paula make it in, but seeing as that will never happen (She may pop up as an AT) Ness is still the most likely character from MOTHER2, though I expressed my opinion on why I don't think Ness will be returning.

Personality wise you won't notice that in Smash because it's just a buffed up Ness in character development. Lucas was a crybaby at the start of his adventure, but at the end he surpassed his own rival. He won't BAAAAAAAW everytime you do an attack.

They are different in appareance, but that doesn't mean they both aren't the same character by MOTHER standarts.

The rest, almost the same there. They could copy paste the Ness moveset and mark that Kumatora teached him PK Fire and PK Thunder. Nobody would notice.

The key word there is 'even'. That phrasing implies that Sakurai is asking if Lucas can surpass not just Ness, but the other Brawl fighters as well. You could expand that statement, then, into something more like: Is it possible he (Lucas) can surpass the other Brawl fighters, even Ness?

My vote goes to Ness being in.

Why u ask? lucas was going to replace Ness in melee, but since mother 3 was delayed, sakurai kept ness, now years later with brawl coming out, replacing ness with lucas is now a possibility, and it seems it happend...

if u check the 1st and 3rd screenshot they have similair if not identical attacks, and with what sakurai saying: "Can he possibly surpass Ness?!" WITHOUT showing Ness is stupid, its like when they reveal falcon "Capt. has an incredible speed, will he be able to surpass the lbue blur Sonic?!" see? its dum, ur giving away a character without showing him, so IMO Ness it out, I never truly liked him, not because hes not hight on the tier list, I could give a **** about that (I use mid tiers or lower) I just never liked him idk why...

so my bottom line is:
Lucas stays while Ness bites the dust...

I think Claus would be more likely than Ness, because Claus is completely different in every way (Unless you count the thunder psi, which is a small part of claus's character) when Ness could easilly be a costume.

It's pretty much speculation.

Also, the quote "Is it possible he can surpass even Ness?!" from the Lucas update, mentioning a character who has yet to be revealed proved quite... interesting. Though Captain Falcon was mention in the Goroh update, Goroh is an assist trophy, and lacks similarities to the Falcon aside being a racer.

They're also using the fact that Lucas was supposed to replace Ness five years before Melee, but the 64 Mother 3 went blarg and Ness took Lucas' spot in the Melee roster.
