Lucas Vs. Ness

I am a Lucas Mainer, despite my misleading user name. I am *was* totally committed to the usage of Lucas until I started reading up on Ness. He seems better in 90% of his moves. I LOVE Lucas but maining him seems illogical when there is someone so similar, yet seemingly better. I guess I made this thread to get some input from the Lucas experts of the world. I have lost my way? Maybe. Please help...I want to love Lucas again.

Well, no one can tell you who to pick, you've gotta decide for yourself, do some research, play them both for a decent amount of time. If you ask me, one's not better than the other; they have their individual strengths and weaknesses. I main both, because they both have a lot of potential in my opinion. Lucas racks up damage more slowly but with greater variety and accuracy, and I think Ness plays a bit 'heavier', hits hard but he needs fewer moves to do so. I play Lucas for a more agile style and Ness for more power.

You're welcome to read up on his moves and "realize" they're better, but that doesn't make it true.

For instance, lucas's attacks as a genral rule are faster and more disjointed.

So which is better, lucas's bair or ness's? both kill, ness's kills sooner everywhere, but lucas's kill sooner over the edge. Ness's beats specials better, but lucas's is disjointed and works against other aerials better.

Or how about PKT? lucas's gets him back to the stage waay better, but ness's builds damage more safely.

Lucas is better than Ness. Maybe you just like playing Ness better than you like playing Lucas...*gasp* Character loyalties are idiotic. I play Lucas because I like his moveset and movement. I don't give a rat's *** that he's low tier. Nor do I care that my secondaries are top tier. It's just what works for me because I enjoy playing them and can win with them. If you enjoy playing Ness more than Lucas and win more with Ness than by all means go for it. There's no reason to make a pointless thread on the Lucas boards, especially with idiotic generalities like "90% of Ness's moves are better."

I know how you feel. My Lucas just plain sucks. I used to believe that Lucas was not as good as Ness. Then I figured that it was probably my playstyle that affected my opinion. I do not rely on my smashes nearly as much as I should (dsmash only a few times and fsmash only when I feel I am close) and I depend on aerials and long range attacks way too much. In essence, I play him just like Ness, though he just doesn't do the things Ness does. I guess its more of how you feel the character as opposed to how many things one has over the other (which in this case, it's nothing much).

I find that Lucas' abilities come out rather quick and have strange hit boxes. Ness' on the other hand (not a very good opinion) feel kind of clunky, smaller hit boxes, and gets caught. Ness' attack in general do feel more powerful, but I have trouble landing a bit of those attacks.

Though Lucas feels smoother to me, he is not as easily gimped as Ness, and his attacks chain together really well for me.

Also, Lucas' tilts are lightning fast. Especially that ftilt, never underestimate it.

theyre both pretty close, although ness's recovery is balls. Lucas has a great defensive game with good smashes. ness has good air moves. they both have id say similar amount of potential just drastically different playstyles. Also tyr 03 is a tittybaby

Ness has good aerials and can deal good damage offensively but he has trouble defending himself once he is on the defensive. He doesn't have the best recovery to offer and he is fairly easy to juggle around since his hitboxes are a lot smaller than Lucas's.

Lucas has trouble doing good offense but maintains a good defense and recovery. I would say that Lucas would be better overall compared to Ness.

I think Lucas is better too, because Ness' yo-yo attacks are weak, and Lucas' Smash up is 1 hit K.O. if the percentege is at least 50%. Plus, Lucas' PK Thunder is better for grabbing on stages, and is easier to control.

I am a Lucas AND Ness user so I guess I see them as very close. One main thing I wonder though, How come everyone says that Ness' aerials are better than Lucas'? I find this false. Ness' Fair is very good, but Lucas' is not only decent on the damage (more so than Ness I believe) but at lower % it can be combo with itself or other aerials with relative ease. Ness' spike is amazing, yes, but Lucas' Dair can be used very efficiently with short hop techniques and can do 20 damage (far more than any other Ness aerial) , also it is a spike! Ness' back air is powerful, but Lucas' is a useful spike and has a wide hitting range. And as for the Uair, they are both very similar so I have no comment. I agree, Ness has beastly aerials but I also believe that Lucas has just as beastly ones.

Another topic I wouldn't mind touching base on is the Smashes and Tilts. Ness, overall, has terrible tilts and a very slow Fsmash. Also his U+Dsmash's are not that useful in anything other than starting off a combo. Lucas on the other hand has amazing tilts, especially Ftilt. Lucas also has a fast, useful Fsmash. Furthermore, Lucas has an U+Dsmash that, when timed right, are amazing assets to his arsenal.

A third topic I can touch on is Throws and Recovery. Throws go to Ness, even if Lucas has more range with his grab. Recovery. Lucas, Lucas, Lucas. Lucas' recovery is farther, faster, and not able to be interrupted. AND he has a grapple. Also with Zap Jumping at his arsenal, you better hope to knock Lucas out of the play area if you want to kill him.

Conclusion:

Lucas.

Ness is amazing and when the situation is right he is better than his blond haired clone (of sorts.) But for overall purposes, Lucas.

when i first blayed brawl, i started as lucas, just because i liked him more, but over time, as i played ness i started more and more to like the feel of playing as him. to me it just felt faster and easier to get ness. so, just take a little time and play as both of them, and then decide which you like better. don't pick a character because of what you hear about his moves, pick because you have fun playing as him.

To reiterate a point: which do YOU like to play? As opposed to which do you read about.

Ness and Lucas are compared to eachother all the time. Despite being psychic children from the same game, their style is way different (I still use Ness as a secondary).

You should like... play Ness for a while and see.

I like Ness but I really enjoy playing as Lucas more.

Yes, his moves do go well together! It is easy to do ariels with Lucas. I fly around if I space out Lucas' double jump and areial attacks!

i used to main lucas and when i tried using ness, i just couldnt play as well.
For me, i liked Lucas better because his moves come out faster and i thought overall his specials were better. while ness PKT2 was stronger, it can be gimped easier and stops once he makes contact. Lucas on the other hand doesnt get gimped as easly and keeps going after he hits; and while it doesnt KO as easly as Ness's PKT2, it can still KO around 90-100%.
and i think Lucas's nair and fair are better than Ness's.
The only thing ness has over lucas is his Bair and Dair.
Overall, Lucas>Ness

Like CMW said, lucas' ariels are underestimated. SHFF Nair and FHFF Dair lead into such a variety of combos. Fair is strong and can kill at high % close to the edge if the other person is not careful. Bair is just the coolest spike in the game IMO.

You can just main both if you can't decide, nobody is gonna shoot you for it.

The method SBR used to determine tiers was terrible.

I do think they're close with Ness and lucas's placement though.
