LIES!!!!

I am panicking!!! I've only got until the 15th until I'm stuck on the other side of the world for some 5 month thingy I have to go to.

I want, no scratch that NEED a decent laptop within the 500 dollar range and it needs to be at my door on the 15th. I've tried Google but it's all advertisers telling you to buy their stuff.

Please, just lots of memory decent RAM and good enough specs to run lots of emulators and stuff like that.

EDIT:Being significantly less panicky now I just noticed this is the first time in a long time I'm posting here at the Computer Cafe.

If hardware reliability is an issue, I would avoid an HP. Most last longer than 6 months, so you'd probably be ok if you're not worried about using it after the next 6 months. But HP's customer service is pretty poor, and they will actively try to rip you off and give you the run around on repairs until your warranty expires.

I've been hearing fantastic things about Asus and Acer recently. If I were you, I'd look at one of those brands. The positive is that they make pretty reliable hardware at a good price, and most likely wouldn't leave you high and dry if you have to get a repair done. The negative ... I guess they aren't as glossy as an HP or Sony.... that's about it.

I'd share my HP horror stories further if I had a bunch of time to type, but I have to get back to work. The short story is DON'T BUY HP.

Also, Ubuntu is awesome. There's my obligatory Computer Cafe ubuntu reference.

Here's a Toshiba option that looks decent. I've been hearing decent things about Toshiba hardware. Apparently, if you aren't an IT guy trying to make service calls to Toshiba all day, they really aren't that bad at customer support. You might like this one.

Interesting... Got any specific model numbers? I really don't know what amount of power is worth what amount of money.

I think I will. Thank you.

I appreciate all your help in this process. And still encourage people to recommend other laptops to other people with different situations.

This is flawless for me. I can't thank you guys enough.
