A cameo appearance as an unlockable character is totally the same thing as a series reboot on a new system :)

some people on this website...
 You're kidding me.

You did read the post I was replying to, right? That might help you out before you go on insulting me.
Nowhere in my post does it say that I don't think R.O.B. and LM are or aren't retro newcomers. I'm saying that by his logic they aren't. He says that because Little Mac had a cameo in Captain Rainbow and Brawl that makes him a non-retro newcomer. That doesn't mean anything, just like it doesn't mean anything for R.O.B. in MKDS (even though R.O.B. was the best character in MKDS if I remember correctly.).

Little Mac having a recent game apparently doesn't make him retro...

But does that mean Ice Climbers are no longer retro because they appeared in Brawl or do they need their own game first to lose retro status?

They need their own game

Punch-Out isn't like that though, there are five games in the series. Ice Climber was one game on the NES.

It all depends on your point of view, but honestly the argument that Little Mac is retro is flawed. Most of the cast would be retro characters by this logic, so there would be no point in a old school newcomer. Also, every time Sakurai mentioned wanting a retro character, he always referred to the dormant Nintendo franchises. Cameo's don't count. Neither do guest appearances.

I too do not consider Little Mac a retro series newcomer, nor do I think that of Mega Man or Pac Man.

The retro series newcomer to me include the likes of Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch, R.O.B, and Pit's introduction in Brawl (with Kid Icarus Uprising, I no longer consider Pit a retro addition, at least in SSB4). They are characters who have lacked starring roles within new entries of their series in recent times. If retro were to be counted as simply characters from older series, then the majority of the case would be retro characters.

An I don't simply say this because there are many retro series newcomers that I'd like to see playable. It is simply how I've always interpreted a retro series addition to be; and was something I would always exclude from my debates arguing for Little Mac's inclusion for SSB when ever the subject came up (so glad he's in, was my 3rd most wanted coming into this SSB).

I consider these thing for Retro

Design has to reflect it's original game
That character hasn't had a game in since the Arcade/NES/SNES era

Mac doesn't fit any of those. Especially since he's using his Wii design, his playstyle has fusion of the Arcade game, NES and Wii.

Ice Climbers are retro, G&W is retro, R.O.B is retro. Pit was once considered retro because he got a redesign in Brawl but after Brawl he has gotten game and his move style reflect that (new moves and final smash)

Mac is far from retro. He would have been retro if he was in Brawl but he isn't anymore.

Maybe historic is more of a better word for him than retro. Retro should pertain more to guys from "dead" series like Ice Climbers and R.O.B., while historic ones have been around for years and have had their fair share of games, like Little Mac and (now) Pit.

Punch Out is more thought of as an older franchise (my father recognized Mac when I was playing the new PO:Wii I just bought, shocking me), but it has been relevant recently enough.

Little Mac is as retro as Donkey Kong but he has had his own game in the last generation and that is where the line is and should be drawn for any character considered retro.

Smash revived Ice Climbers and Pit, they are or were retro revivals, Little Mac is not. Pit is no longer Retro because his series has had a major continuation only recently.
