Now I'm no Link expert, but no one is sure whether he will be the same way in Brawl.

Perhaps people think Link sucked in previous smashes because he was a middle-to-low tier character the vast majority of the time? Or are you referring to the clashings of pro- and anti- WW Link forumites that are going on? I can tell you why. Overrepresentation, clone hate, clone hate for characters who are in fact an alternate version of a character already in the game, and for some people, strangely enough, the cel shading.

Link sucks in the previous smash games because he was slow, most of his attacks were slow, he's easy to combo, and his attacks were laggy. For Brawl, I can't be too sure, but it looks like he'll be easy to combo yet again judging from how Mario was going combo crazy on him in the Nintendo World Trailer that happened in November 2006.

he was REALLy bad in 64 but not that bad in melee.
That is whack.
First off I have absolutely no idea what low-tier is since I'm fairly casual, but I can tell you I've beaten the flarkin out of quite of few Marth heads with the Hylian Hero. Every character has a strength and weakness. Link's strength is a rediculously oversized aresonel and the pure power of the Master Sword. His weakness is lack of speed. Young Link flips his strength for speed. But it's all about perspective and the way you play him. If you think Link sucks, he isn't your character alright? Get over it!

Sorry, I had that biult up for a while. But in all honesty it's all how you look at the characters that makes them good or bad. Link is for full on power people, Pikachu is for runners and gunners, Mario is a balanced beginner and etc. It's your personal style that decides who sucks and who rocks. Super Ace away. (Flies into beam) Gah! Who put that there?

It all depends on the person that plays him, you can be a very good link player and beat every marth, shiek, and fox around. But he is not top tier because of his slow speed and lag.

Link was bad in SSB due to horrible recovery and lack of a broken trait- the best other characters had amazing speed and really great attacks, combos and grabs. In 64 Smash, in addition, his slow grab is crippling.
In Melee, he was somewhat better, but still suffered from slow speed and rather meh recovery. His grab is easier to work around, but it still isn't the greatest, and his attacks aren't that good for his slowness as compared to say, Gannondorf. That isn't to say he's bad, just not very good.

i thought link was good in melee, but since sakurai is focusing on balance this time around he will most liekly get some tweaking done. what i am wondering is if he will keep his normal boomerang from OoT, or will he use the gail boomerang which turned into a tornado...

Visiting from above.
Like several people mentioned, people say Link sucks because he is middle or lower tier (I don't have it memorized). As always, the skill of the players are WAY more important in determining the outcome of a match than is location on the tier list, but it's hard to deny that Link won't fare very well against someone higher on the tier list if his opponent is of near-equal skill. I'm sure Sakurai and Co. will do everything in their power to keep the game as balanced as possible, but as always, hidden things and skills they didn't anticipate will surface and make some characters better to play than others, even if there is a less extreme difference between the two ends of the spectrum (unlike last time).
