They didn't really screw up either of those rosters. Rather there were a few popular characters who should have made it but Didn't. And some random characters who made it who weren't really wanted. But overall both Melee and Brawl have great rosters.

If there is a smash 4 then Ridley and Krystal will most likely get in. The most wanted characters in Melee who didn't make it were many of the first included into brawl. Pit, Meta Knight, Diddy Kong, heck even Wolf. And I think that's part of why Wolf got in over Krystal. Krystal had more popularity prior to Brawl's release but Wolf was wanted in Melee. So rather than making wolf wait again he made Krystal wait.
Exactly. Brawl's roster has every wanted character for Melee with some new ones. The only exceptions are Mewtwo and Goroh, but the roster is still good.

I'm sure that SSB4 will have Krystal, Ridley, K. Rool, Goroh, Isaac (if he's still popular) and Bowser Jr.

Hopefully a Golden Sun 3 will be made like Camelot said they were going to, and Isaac will have even more popularity, even if not, he'll still have it.

Brawl's Roster is made up of Melee's want list, because Sakurai made the silly decision of picking the roster in 2005 when the project started, before his poll of the fans in 2006. When Melee came out , Krystal and her first game were not out yet, so she had no popularity to get in around the time that Sakurai collected data from. Only character he picked from the fans later was Sonic.

When I found this out, I felt better about the roster, justifying why character's with high popularity now didn't get in. Still, this is why I was pulling for DLC, to finally balance out the system so characters wanted now could actually get in before SSB4.

quoted for incorrect thought pattern

they screwed up melee's roster. they screwed up brawl's. what's to stop them from screwing up the next one's? five bucks says guys like gooey and rick will make it in.
They will screw up SSB4's roster because people think the eventual poll is for SSB4, when it is for SSB5. So while we might get characters like Geno, Krystal, Ridley, Takamaru and Mega Man as default characters, people won't care because they are old hat, so the secret character roster will consist of every secret character in Brawl except maybe Lucario, and then add Mewtwo, Toon Zelda/Tetra, and Hanafuda Card Man.

Ok, Krystal wasn't even around when Melee came out, so she didn't have a fair chance due to her not-yet-existent status. To be honest, I supported her over Wolf for Brawl, but would have been happy with either or, ideally, both. But apparently some people don't deem Star Fox important enough for four representatives, although that's probably because of the sub-par games the series has produced recently. If Nintendo would pull their heads out of their ***es and see the potential there, they could produce another great one like 64, but as long as they trust companies like Namco and Q to make their games, the series will continue to decline until it ultimately dies.

Nintendo, hear my plea. Please make the next Star Fox game good.

That basically is the case. 10 of Brawl's 14 new characters were left on the cutting room floor for Melee or did fairly well in the 2001 Melee poll. Really, the problem with Brawl's roster is that Sakurai came up with it in the span of 2 days back in 2005 and spent only about 2 months on all the characters overall (he admitted at GDC that most of the characters were 100% complete by January 2006). Because of this, Sakurai had his head stuck in the past and really made the roster a second thought despite how much importance most of the fans tie to it. Honestly, I'd like them to add characters that they showed a decent amount of interest in Sakurai's journal in the next installment (like Ridley, Krystal, and Geno) but I also hope that they are more aware of contemporary wants to. Granted, a decent number of characters added in Brawl were wanted as far back as Melee but they sort of made the "character cut-off date" 2001 for nearly every character except Ike and Lucario (who were, more or less, added out of obligation).
