I'll keep this brief...

I've been researching Smash for many years now (Just check out my veteran SmashBoard age). Here's my latest project...

I've been developing a way to describe and measure a player's skill. But first, I'm taking a very close look at different playstyles. Read about them here...

http://critical-gaming.squarespace.com/blog/2010/1/11/playstyles-design-pt1.html

So, I'm starting with Pit. First, I've created this new way to look at Pit's moves.

Read more about it here. Contains link to full image

Using this information, I picked a match between me (KirbyKid) and Cha0tic as my first example. Watch the video and the commentary/critique here.

Let me know what you think. And if you want some serious critique and help with your Pit game, I suggest taking the questionair, playing a match with me (probably online), and I'll work on getting back to you with a full analysis.

This sounds very promising. I would love to get a match to improve my overall game & Pit. What do I need to do?

The links are posted above, but I'll make things very clear for anyone who wants to help out.

STEP 1: Very quickly look over this list of defined playstyles.

STEP 2: Fill out this Smash Brothers Questionair.

STEP 3: Contact me via a PM, AIM: PaladineKrynn, Meebo: KirbyKid, My blog messenger embedded on the side, or by email (ADarkDreamer (at) gmail . com) and schedule some time to get some matches in. Next week March 8-13 is my Spring Break. I'll have lots of free time.

And the rest I'll take care of.

Hm.. I think I´m interested, but not to see how good I am but rather how good you know your craft.

Do you have MSN?

I accept the "challenge."

I don't have MSN. Just the 4 ways of contacting me I listed above.

Pit: One of the greatest Heroes of our time
I just want to say thank you so much for at least posting something like this on the Pit boards! I'll definitely try to contact you after I fill out the questionnaire and read on the different play styles. Again, thank you so much for posting something like this so Pit players can have a chance to grow and improve.

Ya know normally i'd say this is a great idea, but you aren't using it to show players playing style, your using it to critique yourself..It was a friendly bro..you can't judge my play skill off a friendly.. you continue to say in your page that telling people what they are doing wrong doesn't help the problem and then to further more say you got hit with a nove because we are playing a different version of smash? get outta here with that.. you wanna play and get my A game meet me in bracket or MM me..don't try to make it seem like your on my level, when i beat you in teams, and you havent played me in a stress filled match

I have to agree with chaotic. I think this thread was good for information about pit. But your modded version of brawl, I didn't know it was B brawl. It changes risks you will take and moves your opponent will do in a tournament scene, changing overall game play.

The knowledge of the play styles is good though, to know how a player plays and not how a character plays in general.

I'm building on all the concept gradually. I stated that it was a friendly multiple times in multiple places. And yes I can judge your skills based on a friendly match in Brawl Balance. The only issue is that it wouldn't be completely accurate.

The purpose of the project is to work towards something much more clear than what we have. I don't know why you're all upset now. I even complimented your style.

It's not "my modded version." I was looking for a way to record matches past 3 minutes and I THOUGHT that I was using a normal version of Brawl with extended replays. I found out after I started recording matches that it was Brawl Balanced and told the players upfront. Of course it changes things, but it's not like that really matters. We're looking at playstyles, patterns, and habits NOT winners and losers.

Because the project wasn't originally designed to give advice I have tip toed around doing so. Once again, working to the point where I can give advice is just one of the goals.

I don't need any more enemies or upset people.

Peace.

Don't get me wrong, I was upset at B brawl.
Your thread looks a bit promising too.
You can continue it, but hopefully in a regular brawl. An ike would never risk so many off edge attacks because of his extra recovery.

It seems like some of you are missing the big picture. If you watched Kirbykid's commentary for other vids, you would notice that he's a really smart player. He's offering his time to help us Pits for FREE! If you are not Koolaid, R@vyn, Vex, Sage, or another top Pit, you had better listen up because Kirbykid has a wealth of knowledge from his experiences in traveling and playing this game for so long.

Don't get mad because someone critiques you. We all get critiqued whether the player is better than us or not.

Anyways, these vids have been a great help KirbyKid. And thanks for the different play styles ^__^!
Don't get it twisted..It can be a good idea, but im pointing out that there are 3 different types of friendlies warmups'(what you do to get your hands warm and without showing too much before singles start), fun(Just messing around chillin with friends, and constructive(getting better)..Weather KK was doing constructive or not, i wasn't therefore makes the project semi useless scale of style and skill because it doesn't simulate stress and pressure that a real match does, and no i generally don't like players that aren't better then me pick me apart on a warm up, and and point out the "okay" ways to counter is sometimes, but that wasn't the point of my post. the point is if you want this project to work, you have to simulate it in a stress and pressure relm.

Why don't we leave determining what is "useless" and why to the person doing all the research. It's neat to think that everyone powers up in the heat of a tournament battle to show their true colors. But the fact of the matter is, based on the way people (like you) learn and how your brain works, you can't say that you masked the majority of your playstyle in our matches.

Think about it this way.... practice makes perfect? No no. Practice makes permanent. Or something close to that. Who you are and how you play the majority of the time greatly influences you. So, I doubt that you spend more time in money/tournament matches. So, looking at friendlies, however you play them, is a good place to start looking at who you are at the core.

Furthermore, so far I'm just looking at playstyles. Whether you have more under your belt or not, you exhibited a good example of a defensive/camp style. I haven't even begun to break down skill yet. That will come within a month or so.

You keep implying that I'm not better than you, but then you also say that friendlies aren't where we really show our skills. You can't have it both ways. Be careful. If you want to go down the "experience" / "tournament rankings" route, you may be surprised.

I haven't begun to "pick" you apart.

Oh. And Part 6 Featuring Kos-Mos.

Pit: One of the greatest Heroes of our time
Reading this really reminds me of a thread by someone named Mookie Rah (I don't know if that was his smashboards name or not, but it appeared in his signature). He described two types of players, one being a re-active player, and one being a pro-active player. A Re-active player usually sticked to one strategy and didn't use much else. He would P. Shield and be at least a good fighter, but he didn't really do much else. A Pro-active player he described as formulating their strategy around the other players strategy and punishing everything they did. Eventually causing fear (or anger) and the Pro-active player could take advantage of the other player even more. To discuss the rest of his post would take too long, and I don't know if it's even around anymore. I read it two years ago before I joined Smashboards (the post was what got me thinking about joining), and it really improved my game. What are your thoughts on that, KirbyKid?

There are a lot of ways to describe different playstyles. I don't know if these two players are the only two types he described, but it seems to fuse a bunch of different types/descriptors together.

just a note ..... in my honest opinion.
Noted.

ehh i have nothing to prove to random Pit players i just so happen to run into, i was just pointing out the flaw of his project since it was at my expense
Just to keep things straight here's what happened.

I talked to UTDzac before hand about helping with the tournament.
I brought the set up you played on.
I asked for permissions to run the project.
I asked if you wanted to participate.
I asked that you fill out a questionair.

And now you think I did all of this at your expense. The only thing you "lost" is a bit of time.

As I have already explained, there aren't flaws in my project. Balance Brawl or not... Tournament match or friendlies.... I needed examples of different playstyles and I got it.

Project success.
