I think if/when K. Rool gets a redesign he will take from both his classic and Paon design.
I do like his body structure more from the Paon design, the larger arms and his legs, add a tail and give him his gold belly, plop the Rare head design with the bulging eyes and larger crown and he's perfect..
Yeah, the original K. Rool's limbs look a lot like an action figure. I just think of that as limitations of the time. We can lose those. But I think the main things, like his googly eyed face, are important to keep so I'm really glad Sakurai did so with the K. Rool MII outfit. I don't like the Paon K. Rool face at all. The Paon face really sucks out the personality from the character. I think K. Rool has a funny face, including big bulging googly eyes that makes him staring at the camera really funny.
One thing that helped me temper my disappointment when I saw the Mii outfit, besides the fact that we got K. Rool content after years of nothing and after so many people said he would never appear in any form again, was the fact those big googly eyes on the miis look hilarious. I think Paon loses that.
I posted about this on another forum, but I'll leave this here as well.
I like both, but I hope they stick with K. Rool's original design. You look at the original model and you can clearly perceive his insanity; he's nasty and menacing. His permanent manic expression is distinguishable and striking. On the other hand you have his modern design where it's overly softened up in my opinion. He looks way too happy... not in a crazed way either. He looks legitimately joyful. He goes from malicious and deranged, to mischievous. The claws and flesh belly push to a more generic image. These combined with the bigger less defined arms bring him closer to the semblance of Bowser. He has thinner arms in DKC2/DK64 which differentiate him a bit from the all too common fat, buff guy physique. With the way he is now, I can't imagine clothing would look too well on him. Take a look at the Paon model mods, or the Smashified edits; his arms are too big for the Kaptain overcoat, and his girth would make the Baron labcoat look like a dress.
As for a redesign, I think the original is perfect, especially the face. It has a very discernible aspect to it. Now I love most character redesigns, but not for K. Rool. Maybe I'm just very particular about it, but I see a lot of fan art of K. Rool and even slight changes to his look turn out to be large alterations for me, oftentimes to the point of him taking on the appearance of a generic crocodile character. That's my biggest concern with a redesign, having him stray too far from his unique appearance. I'm sure some of you will agree with me on my point of view that most fictional crocodilians look the same. I'm not sure what exactly it is, but I think they too closely resemble real life crocodilians. Kremlings don't.
Really hope he keeps his weirdly-understated fourth-wall breaking mannerisms. Stuff like the double-takes (think DKC2 where he looks at the viewer twice in quick succession after some attacks) or pretending to be defeated before attacking. Actually, if K. Rool's ledge attack and floor-recovery attacks could KOs at highish %s (100 or so) that'd be a good equivalentto his feigning death in DKC.
Haven't done one of these in a while - moveset time! Featuring LOTS of GIFs!
King K Rool
King K. Rool enters the fray as a heavyweight projectiles specialist! Contrary to many of the stalwart Nintendo villains, King K. Rool typically eschews brute force in favour of the vast arsenal of weapons at his disposal. This moveset emphasises that aspect of his character, whilst referencing all of his varied appearances. It's zany and chaotic, but that suits the Kremling King perfectly.
Of the main references from games, the only I believe I've omitted is the gases from DKC2 - I omitted them in favour of more cannonball based moves for thematic consistency between the DKC1 and 2 sections of the moveset.
General Animations:
First Jump: (DKC)
Second Jump: K Rool gets a burst of upwards momentum from his helipak (DKC3)
Run: (DKC)
Special Attacks:
Neutral Special: King K. Rool throws his crown at the opponent. Its direction can be controlled. (DKC)
Side Special:
King K. Rool fires a spiked cannonball from his blunderbuss with varying behaviour. Its angle of bounce can be controlled by the tilt. Angling upwards gives a much higher bounce; angling downwards results in cannonballs which fire in circular arcs.
Down Special: A Cannonball drops in front of King K. Rool from the top of the screen.
Up Special: King K. Rool shoots forward whilst spinning at a high speed. Can be fired in any direction by quickly inputting that direction, like a single use Pikachu quick attack. (King of Swing)
Smash Attacks:
Forward Smash: King K. Rool causes a short range explosion from the tip of his blunderbuss. (Original)
Down Smash: King K. Rool slams the ground, causing a shockwave. The greater the charge, the stronger the shockwave. (DK64)
Up Smash: King K. Rool viciously spins the blades of his helipak above him (Original)
Neutral Attacks:
Jab: K Rool does a quick one-two punch. (DK64)
Forward Tilt: K Rool punches forwards; his glove flies off the end . Good, disjointed range, but the glove is weak without the fist (DK64, though not like a boomerang anymore)
Down Tilt: K Rool swipes at the opponents feet, tripping them. (Original)
Up Tilt: K Rool performs a powerful uppercut. (DK64)
Aerial Attacks:
Neutral Aerial: K Rool quickly spins in midair. This animation is similar to his up special, so see the gif there. (King of Swing)
Forward Aerial: A quick swipe forwards with his claws (Barrel Blast)
Backward Aerial: K Rool fires flames from his blunderbuss behind him for a long range, disjointed aerial. (DKC2)
Downward Aerial: A belly flop sex kick (Donkey Kong Land)
Upward Aerial: King K. Rool weakly spins the blades of his helipak above him. Disjointed.
I've not done the dash attack or grabs, but hopefully this post is useful at least for a source of GIFs of the various sorts of attacks he could use.
Why would anyone want that to be his Down Special? A ground pound is just boring, and it's half the reason people just scream he'd be a Bowser clone.
I mean if he appears it could happen (and if Sakurai is familiar with DK64, I'd say it's probably as either a down special or a down aerial) but when I'm making the moveset I'm always going to omit it in favour of something that's interesting. I hate ground pound moves and having it as a special doesn't glue with the rest of him.
Are we discussing personas?
I've actually thought about it a while back, so how about Sir K. Rool of Kremalot?
Would be a nice contrast to the eastern style of Bowser's Kingdom in Mario Odyssey.
Maybe it would be a bit too on-the-nose, or a bit too political, but I had the idea on a Komrade K. Rool dressed vaguely as Stalin who rallies the Kremlings against the Kongs. I'm sure there's a pun to be made somewhere between the Kremlin and the Kremlings. Maybe the final world could just be a huge fortified castle a la the castle spire from DKC2, but also referencing Russia's Kremlin, with a lot of K. Rool Propaganda like flags decked in red (or green), and statues of Komrade K. Rool adorning the backgrounds. maybe cutscenes could show K. Rool commanding Kremlings with speeches that are just the Rare-style incoherent gibberish speak. Maybe his final boss weapon of choice in such a game could be a large war hammer (I'd also suggest maybe a cleaving sickle, but again, that's probably too on the nose.)

It wouldnt be the first time Nintendo took a jab at the ol' sickle and hammer, one of Bowsers punishments in Mario Party 2 was the 'Bowser Revolution' in which he steals everyones coins and distributes them equally. Marx, Kirbys backstabbing friend from the Super Nintendo may be a little more subtle reference as well.
It would never happen today, but It would be pretty funny to see an intro cutscene in which DK finds his banana hoard stolen, then redistributed to every Kremling on the island.

And they only get like, 2 bananas each between every Kremling.
And the more I think about it, a sickle would be a sweet weapon. K. Rool swings a large hammer for slow attacks that leave him open to be jumped on, then brings the heat with a boomerang sickle. Maybe it could bounce around the final boss level like Wendy's ring projectiles from Mario.
You can count me as a supporter. I actually had a really bad habit of not finishing my games when I was younger, and I especially had trouble with Donkey Kong games including the original DKC and DK64. So I never actually got to K Rool... That's not to say that I didn't enjoy the games, but it was just hard for me to see it though till the end, especially when things got difficult (as they often did). That said, I loved the cut-scenes that K Rool appeared in DK64, and thought he was a pretty awesome and fun character. I'm not sure the thought really occurred to me to add him to Smash until I got here during Smash 4 speculation, but I instantly loved the idea, and I still do! I'm just not sure what to expect from Sakurai when it comes to DK reps. Dixie is probably the most likely, but I want both of them!

I really want to believe that King K. Rool will be in Smash Switch. I've wanted him since Melee (love his trophy there btw), but I've always been left disappointed. I'm not sure what to think about in this situation, but I will try to hold some hope this time. K. Rool is my favorite video game villain, so seeing him in Smash would really make me happy. It really upsets me how he hasn't appeared in any of the newer DKC games and I'm hoping that changes in the future, but for now I want to see him added in Smash. So here's to our King! May he one day grace us with his presence in Smash.
Also, if they do add him, I hope they add the "Auugh!!" sound effect when you footstool him (or when he KO's). I would absolutely love that!

Thinking about it, Cloud and Bayonetta make a good case for the Kaptain outfit being likely. That said, how would Sakurai resolve the issue of having the crown as an attack in the Kaptain form?

For a Kaptain and Baron costume, if it were me I'd just Occam's Razor the issue and have him hammer space his crown in any costume where he's not already wearing it.
Yo, so hear me out. Am suddenly super annoyed by the fact that Rare never got to make another handheld game for Nintendo outside of Diddy Kong Racing DS. Nobody else feel this way?
I definitely feel this way. I was secretly hoping they'd come back to remake Donkey Kong 64 on 3DS. With Orcarina of Time and Star Fox 64 getting ported over to it, I was thinking that it'd be great for it to happen with DK64. Sadly, that didn't come to be.
I wish Rare went ahead with DKC4 instead of DKRDS. It probably would have been a big success and when Retro took over the series they would feel less need to do a soft reboot.
I don't think we'll get anything besides Kaptain because presumably a large portion of moves will come from the blunderbuss and it's the fan favorite costume. Baron and Krusha seem unlikely to me, but who knows?
I'd like to be counted as a supporter for K. Rool. Donkey Kong 64 was one of the first games I ever 100% completed and I loved the way K. Rool was portrayed. Hopefully his diabolical nature is captured in Smash. He's a DK character, a heavy, and a villain, which are three categories that really should be accounted for. I also played through DKC 1 & 2 on the Virtual Console and his boss fights were really memorable.
I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I am feeling really good about a DK character getting in. Between the high demand of K. Rool and the recent appearances of Dixie Kong, it's hard to imagine Sakurai not going for either one especially if some inclusions will be decided by the Ballot. I wouldn't say that a DK character is guaranteed, but there's a lot of reasons to be hopeful.
Rayman may be my most wanted newcomer period, but K. Rool is the probably the most deserving to get in and would be so awesome to see. Count me in!
For some reason, I have always been an advocate for more villains in Smash. They have always intrigued me more than the heroes a lot of the time. Count me in Kutthroats!! All hail the King of the Kremlings!
Totally down for King K to be a fighter. I think the biggest thing hurting his chances is not being in a game for a while, but he is a character everyone wants. Plus Smash need more villains, and what better way to revive his character than in Smash Bros. add him in this game and just throw him in the next DKC lol.
