Hey, I just want to let you know I'm having the same issue the others are. Can't load in any alt stages. I'm using Dolphin to run it,

Interestingly enough though, I managed to get Cool Cool Mountain to load in one time, by sheer luck. I was doing exactly what I do every time, and for some reason it just worked. No idea what I'm doing, but I do appreciate the work you did to compile the stages, and would like to say thank you!

So I tested out both the Homebrew and Hackless on Dolphin using a fresh install off Mediafire and it worked perfectly for me, so I can't help but feel like it's an execution error rather than a technical error.

Remember when selecting an alt stages: hold the button combination for a few seconds, then select the stage while holding the button combination and pressing A, do not press any other buttons and don't let go of the button combination.
For example, if I wanted to play PM Skyloft, I would hold L, put the cursor on Temple while still continuing to hold L and no other buttons but L, let go of the control stick and wait a few seconds while continuing to hold L, then press A while continuing to hold L. A slight nudge on the control stick while pressing A or letting go of the button combination before pressing A will make it load the regular stage. Let me know if it still doesn't work or if this was the issue.

I figured out what I was doing wrong! When you select the alt stage you have to quickly tap A and release. If you're holding A during the loading screen at all then it just does the standard stage.

I was under the impression you had to hold A as part of the combination of buttons.

Thank you for the help!

Dont use A at all... press Start. I feel like every thread about alternate stages should start with BIG RED LETTERS reading, "Don't load alternate stages with A button, PRESS START"

I actually never realized this, I guess I always tapped A, I didn't know holding A made a difference but now I know. I'll add this to the OP to use start instead of A. Glad we figured it out the problem!

Just an update, I'm in the testing phase of my build ;) I can only assume these extra costumes are gonna give me a bit of a fight before they lie down and cooperate:substitute:
Awesome! Hopefully the extra costumes end up working. I'm assuming the most complicated part is the stock icons right?

Nope! All the cosmetics are done and accounted for. Getting the CSPs to fit under the file limit is the real challenge, especially when I'm trying to go for quality here.

this build is awesome but it crashes all the time so your first priority should be to make it more stable instead of increasing stage count, costumes, etc. Until then this is not the build for me. sorry 'bout that

I've never encountered problems with crashing or have had reports about crashing and I have extensively tested it to be stable. Where is it crashing, I can try to figure out the problem for you.

Wow.
For a Smash Cadet, it looks like you have this thing going pretty good.

Plus, this is one of the few P:M builds that use 3.6B. (I'm developing a build now.)

I'm impressed.

I actually caught this error a while back, and have updated it since. Try downloading the newest version and everything should work fine, sorry about that!

Alright my man, here's the deal.

I got my menu's working great, every character has 10 slots and the ones that can have extra (with the exception of Wolf) have an extra costume, so that's Toon Link, ROB, Ganondorf and Sonic that have 11 costumes. The problem I'm having now is that with all the files in place, I'm basically at 1.99gb and the SD card will not run correctly due to not having sufficient read/write space. I'm going to try to find a way to downsize some of your music files but if I cant mitigate this problem, I might just run default stages instead of 200+. That's a worse case scenario though, I'm still dedicated to getting this to work for everyone.

Ahh yeah, it would be hard to fit everything under 2gb. But that's awesome that you got it to work! You could always remove unnecessary stages to keep it at a smaller file size too instead of only keeping default stages.

Although this problem seems to be fixed for the majority of people, I spent about a collective hour or two over the past week reading and re-reading these messages and your solutions seem to be both overly complicated and unneeded compared to my experiences with the mod, requiring more finger athletics than I'd like. I myself have had only minor problems loading the custom stages and have been able to solve the issues myself in a matter of minutes. So here's the way I used, listed in step form for easier reading:

  1. Select your character (Duh...).
  2. Search the stage list (in the OP, hidden in a spoiler) for a stage you wish to play, making sure to know approximately where the base stage is and on what page, then continue to the Stage Selection Screen (SSS). This is due to the limited time in the next step.
  3. Choose the stage before or during the time where the background menu music "freezes". This usually happens 5-10 seconds after entering the SSS (The game will freeze at the same time every time you open up this screen).
Choosing the stage within this time period will cause the game will stay frozen for about another 5 seconds. This is important because choosing the stage after the music resumes will only load the base stage no matter what buttons are held. If this happens, return to the character select and try again.
  4. Hold the required button combination for the desired stage and ONLY these buttons during this frozen period, after the base stage is selected but before the game unfreezes.
  5. Voila! You have your desired stage to play on to your heart's content.
NOTE: While writing this up, I booted up the Dolphin version and it seems people are correct about those versions, but went very haphazardly about explaining it.
The instructions provided from me seem to only work on the 4GB homebrew version when played through a USB loader on a physical Wii (Not Wii U, Wii Mini or Wii Family), but also be easier to perform as long as you enter knowing where each stage is, due to the bigger window for button-combo input that occurs after selecting a stage. This also happens to not distractedly change the SSS in undesired ways, like stage striking and page turning. Select the stage before the music stops, hold the combo while the game is frozen. Simple. Also, thanks for the mod!!

Every time I use the pack, from the PM menu, it launches brawl instead then crashes after I leave the main menu. I'm using the hackless version on my wii.

I'll run them through the Stage Manager later and see if I can do just that. Is it easy to add new stages with that? I've never attempted it before.
Naw, you have to use the ASL Tool to add the button combination for the stage and module, then add the stage to the melee folder and the module to the module folder. Brawl Stage Manager is good for viewing the stage and replacing/deleting it, but you can't add the stage through Brawl Stage Manager unfortunately.

  1. Search the stage list (in the OP, hidden in a spoiler) for a stage you wish to play, making sure to know approximately where the base stage is and on what page, then continue to the Stage Selection Screen (SSS). This is due to the limited time in the next step.

  3. Hold the required button combination for the desired stage and ONLY these buttons during this frozen period, after the base stage is selected but before the game unfreezes.
Although this is a valid way to select the stage, it is not quite necessary to select the stage when the background menu music lags/freezes in the SSS. With the stages that require R to load, I would know what page the stage is on and hold R accordingly.
For example, if I wanted to select Balloon Fight which is an alt to Hanenbow on Page 2, I would hold R on page 1, which will turn the page on Page 2, continue to hold R, scroll to Hanenbow then press start while continuing to hold R. For stages that require X to load, I would have my cursor on Random or not on a particular stage, hold X then scroll to the stage, then press start while still continuing to hold X.
But if that method that you listed works for you then that's good.

Hmm, I heard this error usually occurs if you named your SD Card "projectm". If this is not the case, I would say try reinstalling over a clean reformatted SD card.

Well, I like my files organized, so guess what I named my SD card! yeeeah...

Checking to see if it works now, I'll tell you later.

EDIT: It worked! Awesome pack, but some skins are missing custom CSP.

Mr.L (white)
Ganon (all alts)
Charzard (black alt)
Samus (all alts)
Pit (black alt)
Rob (all alts)

Good to hear that it worked!
I left those CSPs untouched as SJS hasn't made CSPs for those alts yet, once he releases his new CSPs with those alts I will update my pack with them.

But in the meantime, I've just updated the build to version 1.3!

In the new update, I applied the palette from NyxTheShield's SSS Screen to my build, here's how it looks.

And I changed the HUD to Smash 3 while still keeping Stock Icons

And of course I added more stages. What's new to the Homebrew Edition is that certain stages have Omega Variants which can be accessed by holding Y before selecting the stage, only few stages have Omega Variants however once more Omega Stages get uploaded to Brawl Vault I will include more.
Another new feature to the Homebrew Edition is that holding L + A when selecting a PM Legal Stage (bottom two rows of first page) except Fountain of Dreams and Castle Siege will load a Legal Alt Reskin of the Stage

Full changelist:

Ver. 1.3 - 09/08/2015
- Changed SSS Screen by using palette from NyxTheShield's SSS Screen
- Implemented new HUD (Smash 3 HUD with Stock Icons)
- Replaced PM Results Screen with Colosseum Results Screen
- Repositioned Alt Stages for Skyworld, Hanenbow and Pictochat
- Added stages
  • Added Freezeflame Galaxy to Bowser's Castle
  • Added Melee Adventure Mushroom Kingdom to Peach's Castle
Homebrew Only
- Added Stages
  • Added Duck Hunt to Hanenbow
  • Added Dr. Mario to Pictochat
  • Added New Skyworld to Skyworld
  • Added Mushroom Kingdom III to Delfino Plaza
  • Added Big Battlefield to Battlefield
  • Repositioned Alt Stages in Delfino Plaza and Mushroomy Kingdom
  • Added Omega Stages: Hold Y on Certain Stages to get an Omega (Final Destination) Variant: Yoshi's Island, Delfino Plaza, Kongo Jungle, Peach's Castle, Temple, Brinstar, Bowser's Castle, Halberd, Mushroomy Kingdom, Training Room, Skyworld, Pictochat, Hanenbow, Pokemon Stadium 2
  • Added Alt Reskins of PM Legal Stages: Now every PM Legal Stage (bottom 2 rows of first page) except Castle Siege and Fountain of Dreams has an Alt Reskin: Hold L + A

Oh my god thank you so much for the HUD
No problem!

For those who haven't seen, here's the Brawl Vault link for the HUD in this build

Does anyone think it's possible to be able to use ASL on custom stages?
I'm not quite sure, it's not possible using the ASL Tool, however there could be a way to do it by manipulating the code directly, I haven't seen anybody do it yet though so I don't know if this is possible.

Hmm that sounds like it the SD Card might not have enough room then if it's not able to write those files. Right click on your SD Card and go to properties to see how much space it can store. The Hackless Edition needs 1.81 GB of free space I believe, but if your SD Card can't fit it then there's always ways of going around it.
Does it say anything else when you transfer the files to your SD Card?

It is possible to do it with the ASL tool. However, it counts it for every custom stage so every STGCUSTOM would have to have the same number of alternate stages/module files and the same button combinations for loading them. I worked around this in my personal build by just having duplicate stage files when necessary to prevent the game from crashing if you don't want as many stages on a particular slot.

Oh I see, cool! That's good to know, thanks for the info! Is the naming the same though, like would the alt for STGCUSTOM01 be STGCUSTOM01_Z and module st_custom01_Z?

"The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “STGPIRATES_C.pac” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)"

I've already done this and also have re-downloaded the file at least 5 times and I still get the same exact problem everytime. It's killing me this pack looks amazing lol

Is your SD Card formatted as Fat32?

Also, have you ever had this problem when installing vanilla Project M?

I'm using this on a wii u with a classic controller. Everything works great, but none of the stages that require z to load work. I think it has something to do with the classic controller's zr and zl buttons being read as a different input than gamecube's z button. I don't know if it's fixable though :/

EDIT: I am also using the homebrew version
