I've shifted my mindset from "he's more likely than not" to "50/50." If he doesn't get in I think the ballot is most likely not going to be used for DLC unless Sakurai goes "btw Wolf won here you go."

When the first ballot character hits I think we will get an idea of how things are going to go based on who the first ballot character/characters are.

I mean if we get some obscure character that no one expected then it's clear the amount of votes won't count for characters and it's all Sakurais choice.

I wonder how this thread would feel if Chrom comes from the ballot....I mean he along with K. Rool has a Mii costume but he's also in a Final Smash, we don't know what his position is in Japan though......

-Sakurai says in an interview why he chose a costume instead of a playable fighter
-DLC ends and he's not on the roster
-A freak accident occurs and he's given an NPC role of some sort

The point of the matter is, Captain Falcon is a veteran fighter. Not only that, but one that happens to have been a staple in the Smash series since the beginning. This cannot be ignored.

This is what makes Captain Falcon a bad counterexample for the (hypothetical) reasoning of recentness in regards to potential newcomer K. Rool.


So again, the only reasonable counterexample is Duck Hunt.
This is because:
a) Duck Hunt is a newcomer, not a veteran fighter.
b) Duck Hunt is not a guest (which have their own guidelines).
c) Duck Hunt is (currently) the only Nintendo newcomer that hasn't had any recent (or at least post-Brawl) releases.

And even then, Duck Hunt is more along the lines of an exception due to its status as the token "surprise" fighter.

DHD is from a single game released in the 80s, while K. Rool hails from one of Nintendo's biggest franchises that is actively getting new installments.

Duck Hunt isn't really the surprise fighter, that was Wii Fit Trainer (who would have thought she would be in). Duck Hunt was reasonably possible.

Wii Fit Trainer was unexpected by near everyone, but was NOT meant to be the surprise (that would've required her to have been unlockable and not be made public knowledge until after release, not accounting for leaks).

People should stop trying to get patterns out of Sakurai. By now it's obvious he adds who he wants anyway. The King's hiatus don't mean anything if he dislikes him anyway, same with the votes. I wouldn't put it past him too to just hide the results, add who he wants from the top 10 and call it a day.

I believe someone found Sakurai's "Opening Idea" of Smash 4 and Rosalina, Robin and Duck Hunt (Who Sakurai labelled as the surprise) were mentioned as fighters there

Rool is a special snowflake in terms of precedent (different in details, similar in principle IMO), the fact that he and Isaac are getting so many votes and outranking so many muhrelevant candidates will hopefully persuade the team to stop using said criterion as heavily as they did this time around. Your latest game being newer than other characters doesn't make you remotely interesting, your personality and moves do.

tbh, even though I check the playstyle and potential after everything else, it;s still freaking important.

Because even the SG articles about the GDC slides shows that Sakurai put a huge emphasis on how the characters feels according to what he is, not just what he is.

And I actually do consider the playstyle to be far more important than potential, it almost defines a character in ssb

The video showed a solid point: Notice how King K. Rool is in the middle of the group of Mii's while the others surround him? Which leads me thinking to something else. From the group screenshots of the Mii bundle, King K. Rool is in front of the other Miis, almost like he's leading them or something. This could mean that King K. Rool is going to be revealed soon?

Then again, I'm looking way too much into this.

Recent in-game appearance is, in case the ballot sticks true to what it promised to us from the beginning, irrelevant.

The relevance is made by the people voting for him on the ballot. That's at least my interpretation of it.

Oh and yes, with a lot of people voting for him and thereby being potential consumers of the K.Rool DLC the argument of the Kremling King being not so marketable is invalid.

I honestly think the ballot doesn't mean much. If K. Rool truly is deconfirmed (which in my heart I believe he is, which is why I removed him from my sig, it's too painful) then the popularity of characters means relatively nothing if they have other "factors" in their way. Be it relevance (which is all that really stood in his way if we're talking purely about ballot here) or anything else.

They're either using the ballot to pick from preselected characters, or they're not using the ballot at all. They presented it as a suggestion box. So technically any character is game, as a character with 1 vote could be selected. They can pick any character and say it was a ballot pick...

If K. Rool truly is out of the running, I'm just hoping that it's because they wanted to add Dixie first. I hate to think we could end up with a near 60 roster and have NEITHER of them.

To be fair if you haven't played or seen them it's difficult to come up with one. It's once you do that you realise all the potential.

Isaac getting moderate votes won't do a damn thing in relation to the "criterion".
Dark Dawn exists. It was released in 2010. Isaac was in it. He may not have been the protagonist, but he was in it.

He was "relevant", yet didn't make it.
His son Matthew, who was the protagonist of the game, was "relevant", yet didn't get added in Isaac's stead.

So explain to me why Isaac being moderately popular in the Ballot as far as we can assume will make the development team decide not to use relevancy as a "criteria" (which wasn't the case to begin with; it only affected how much of a priority a heavily considered newcomer was in comparison to the others, not whether or not they were "eligible") in the future, when he had relevancy.

When the first ballot character hits I think we will get an idea of how things are going to go based on who the first ballot character/characters are.

I mean if we get some obscure character that no one expected then it's clear the amount of votes won't count for characters and it's all Sakurais choice.

I wonder how this thread would feel if Chrom comes from the ballot....I mean he along with K. Rool has a Mii costume but he's also in a Final Smash, we don't know what his position is in Japan though......

I agree. But Isaac's lack of an AT is actually a big issue within itself. There's no chance it was removed because he was considered a playable character but was cut or something.

His lack of an AT can only be attributed to a complete lack of relevance and care for the GS series.
