Dunno if this has been mentioned and I'm probably the only one here complaining about it, but.....the lack of animation of clothing articles bugs be. Dunno if it's hardware limitations, it hasn't been animated yet, or what.

Just to get an idea of what I mean, notice Marth's cape.

(50% slown down, so yeah.)

There are probably other characters like this, but....yeah. Something that I'm surprised noone's apparently paid attention to.
.....All credit for the GIFs go to FlynnCL, btw.

Well they are still working on the game, perhaps they didn't get around to animating Marth's cape yet.

I recall Bowser's fingers being pretty stiff during the first smash developers direct at last years E3.

Huh, hadn't noticed. Having seen it I can say I hope that it's just because it's a work in progress, but I honestly won't mind too much if it stays this way.

It doesn't really matter to me. If lack of clothing animation means more time put into the Wii U version then i'm all for it.

I honestly wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't pointed it out, to be fair, this is the 3DS version. I honestly don't care about the quality, I already find it questionable that it is going to be ready before the Wii U version.

Don't the 3DS and Wii U versions have different teams working on them respectively? At least if I recall correctly...

Aesthetic adjustments are usually made last in game dev. Get the basics down first, then go to the capes.

I really wouldn't care if the 3DS version lacked cloth physics because very few games do cloth physics well! :V

The only two games off of the top of my head that do it really well are Journey on PS3, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (there is this one dress for Lili you could get as pre-order DLC, and it has AMAZING cloth physics. Other than that though, this game's cloth physics were nothing special).

The only cloth physics that matter to me are Rosalina's, so I can see the cosmos beneath her gown!

@ Pazzo. Pazzo. : Good point.

But yeah. I had a feeling it's not final since, you know, still in development and all that jazz. But just wanted to point this out, is all. :p

Well thank you. We need more people who notice the small things like... capes... :p

At this point in the development cycle, I'd be pretty surprised they would have time to change stuff like that. The game will be in beta now; minor bug fixes and such is all that will be happening. The game is out in about 3 months, after all.

It kinda looks animated to me. It looks more profound at the very beginning in the 2nd gif. Maybe it just acts differently this time. In both scenes, Marth lands an attack and is falling back again. Perhaps if there is no contact it would flail around more, or he would need to fall for longer. So to me, it's hard to tell, but if that's the case then yeah it could animate a little more.

Wasn't it said that the team working on the 3DS version is the same for the Wii U version? I can't seem to find the interview that answered this right now...

Seems that there is a mild bit of animation to it, so perhaps it's just being tweaked slightly? Or maybe some of the footage we've been shown is actually a tad bit older than we've been led to believe...(Note: I doubt it.)

Yeah, it does seem like there is a little bit of animation there, but it seems a little stiff.

Additionally, does anyone remember how well animated cloth was in Brawl? More or less? Given the 3DS power level, could Brawl's be a good benchmark for identifying how well animated it is?

It was...animated.

I mean it would often clip through him, which you could notice when you paused it. It was vaguely realistic, but not very advanced.

It's looking to be pretty similar in Smash Wii U. But since this is such a fast paced game, it really shouldn't matter, you will only notice when you pause and mess around with the camera.

Don't forget the direct was likely made in advance. Coulda been a month or two before we got it.

Wouldn't animating the cape cause some slow downs? Now I'm no tech genius or anything, but I'd imagine this is intentional to keep the game at 60fps in 3D.

There are probably more sacrifices than this as well. 3D 60fps is a hella of a feat.

I would say it's just they hadn't gotten to it at that point. Small animations like that are taken care of during the polish stage of things. You'll get your cape flap don't you worry.

This is also true; we were probably witnessing out-dated footage.
If Diddy and Lucario's Brawl icons aren't a sign that we were witnessing out-dated footage, or soon-to-be-updated footage, I don't know what is.

If I were a programmer who were trying my hardest to make Smash run 60fps in 3D... I'd likely have two cape animations, one with physics and another with normal animations.

But my eyes tell me that that cape was perfectly stiff. It's in perfect alignment with Marth's shoulders at all times.

New idea, what if the cape is stiff to preserve framerate in Smash Run? There's like 15 items on-screen, up to four players, and a giant maze to run around. Compared to a normal march it's all pretty crazy.

All I'm gonna say is, hopefully this eliminates clipping for the most part. I'm so OCD about that kinda thing...

Self-clipping, possibly. But if his cape is stuck to his shoulders, then if he turns his shoulders back (say, during a backflip) then his cape will cut him in half. Wii U advanced physics is your best bet.
