Dear Journal,
It’s day seven of the Fourth and Final Community discussion on the MetaKnight. It has been a rather boisterous discussion indeed. I got involved in the discussion and learned a great deal indeed. The general flow of the thread is simply:
MK should be banned.
No he shouldn’t.
Yes he should.
No he shouldn’t, get better noob.
I’m not a noob, I go to tournaments!
Just cause you go to tournaments doesn’t mean you’re not a noob.
Well just because you’re in the SBR doesn’t mean you intelligent.
*insert troll here*
*inset random neutral person that voted anyway*
*alternate account*
Well, you can’t compare Brawl to Street Fighter.
Yes you can! They’re both fighting games!
But you complain about me comparing Brawl to Melee?
Brawl and Melee are different.
*insert more contradictory nonsense about pro-ban using theory while anti-ban uses theory as well but never admits to it*
*more trolls*
*more alternate account accusations*
*POKEMANZ!*
*other random stuff*
*double post?*
MK shouldn’t be banned.
You get the picture. Basically, you have a majority of the community (or an illusion of a majority of the community) that wants the MetaKnight banned, but that majority is looking like it will not be majority enough to get the MetaKnight banned.
So what I decided to do was ask the MetaKnight himself, and see his few on the matter. After all, he is the one with all the eyes on him.
MarKO X: So MetaKnight, do you think you should be banned?
MetaKnight: CUMHM!
And with that, MetaKnight disappeared using IDC.
The fact of the matter is, the evidence of whether or not the MetaKnight should be banned or not is not clear, and as a result, he probably won’t be banned. You have some people who see the evidence and are thoroughly convinced that the MetaKnight is banned. You have other people seeing the same evidence and are not convinced that the MetaKnight is banworthy.
I, after my arguing, my trolling, and my asking of a few key questions, have come to a rather different conclusion:
The MetaKnight IS broken, but the rules and social conditions that we play under make the MetaKnight’s brokenness unclear.
The three things that keep us from realizing the MetaKnight is broken are
1) the banning of the Infinite Dimensional Cape
2) the 50 Ledge Grab rule
3) the “soft banning” of Air Planking
The Banning of the Infinite Dimensional Cape
Smashers all around the world had forced orgasms when they first saw the Infinite Dimensional Cape (IDC). The MetaKnight now had a trick that gave him both invincibility frames AND invisibility frames for as long as the player held down and pressed up on the c-stick. With the IDC, the MetaKnight could avoid Final Smashes, Gooey Bombs, sticked C4s, the threat of being in slow motion, the threat of being small via Lightning or Poison Mushroom, the threat of a huge character via Mushroom or Lightning, Pokemon, Assist Trophies, etc., and that’s assuming you’re playing with items. Basically, he was now a god. Clearly, without a doubt, the IDC was broken, and since it was a part of the MetaKnight, one would think that the MetaKnight would in fact be banned from tournament play. But instead, IDC was banned. Basically, you’re keeping a broken character from using a technique that makes him broken... because it can be used to infinitely stall the match, just like Sonic’s Homing Attack under the stage. (interesting tidbit, MK can fly under the stage and give Sonic the business for doing that. )... there is actually more to IDC than I want to put here, but whatever.
The 50 Ledge Grab Rule
The 50 Ledge Grab Rule was created due to this phenomenon known as Planking. Simply put, Planking is the abuse of the ledge to obtain an advantage. Characters such as Martha and Gaymenwatch are supposedly capable of planking, but no one character could plank quite like the MetaKnight. With 5 jumps, 4 specials to aid recovery, and 2 glides, not only was the MetaKnight the best at planking, he was also the best at dealing with planking.
Instead of “getting better” and “learning how to deal with planking” (similar to constant arguments from the anti-ban about getting better against the MetaKnight), Planking was quickly discouraged without hard evidence (sound familiar?) via the 70 Ledge Grab (which, apparently, the MetaKnight said, “So?” to), which was upgraded to the 50 Ledge Grab rule, which states that if you grab the ledge more than 50 times a match, you are disqualified from that match. The thing with the 50 Ledge grab rule is simply that no matter how many characters you wanna say can plank, the MetaKnight is the best at it and the best at dealing with it. So without it, one could assume that the MetaKnight is in fact broken... but this non SBR approved rule (If you look in the Official SBR Ruleset, you may notice that nothing in it says anything about the 50 Ledge Grab Rule.) has kept the MetaKnight in the game.
The “soft banning” of Air Planking
Do you know what happens when a resourceful person gets limited? That person begins to really use what he has to its fullest potential. The MetaKnight is no different. Just like the MetaKnight said, “So?” to the 70 ledge grab rule, the MetaKnight has now shown that it can say, “So?” to the 50 Ledge Grab Rule... by Air Planking. Once again, with 5 jumps, 4 recovery specials, and 2 glides, the MetaKnight can stay in the air, spamming fast, long ranged, high priority attacks (as well as airdodges) for quite a long time. This is basically air planking, using aerials to defend yourself. There are two very extreme, very popular cases of Air Planking (Plank vs DaPuffster, which can be seen on Youtube, and Dojo vs DEHF, which is probably destroyed evidence. lol), and in both cases of Air Planking, the MetaKnight won. The MetaKnight’s air planking just may well be this game breaking technique, but outside of those two cases, no one is really actually doing it. With such an amazing record (the MetaKnight is 2 and 0 loses when he air planks), you have to wonder if the MetaKnight really is broken, but no one is doing it because air planking is gay, and as a result, is socially discouraged... but if it wins you matches, why not do it? Play to win, right?
Because of these three conditions, the MetaKnight is not being played at his full potential and cannot be played at his full potential. It’s one thing if a human is not capable of playing the MetaKnight due to the limitations of being human (as is the case with Melee Fox, who is the best character in that game, but requires excessive tech skill and near perfection to be unbeaten), but Planking, IDC, and Air Planking are all in the human scope of ability to perform while playing the MetaKnight. The only problem is that there are these conditions that keep the MetaKnight from being played at full potential to see if at the highest level of play, it is in fact play the MetaKnight or die.
Sincerely,
MarKO X
PS: is it a conspiracy to keep MetaKnight in the game? Well... that may be another journal entry for another day...
