I think Yu would be more likely than Aigis simply because of iconicness.

Also Jack Frost is assist trophy material at best.

Even though goro deserves it more

Hey, PQ2 looks great!

It seems Joker will make his Nintendo debut prior to Smash Ultimate's release.

Now that he’s officially making his Nintendo debut this fall, it’s time to pledge my support, if there were to be any Persona representation he’s a prime candidate, with lots of moveset potential and popularity to boot!

Don't know why I haven't posted here before, I support. I loved Persona 3 and 4, I've really been enjoying 5 so far. I think Joker could be a great Smash character.

So I was thinking, if we were to get Joker doesn’t anyone think we could see other Persona games represented besides 5, or just 5 like how Final Fantasy 7 was represented in Smash 4 (I’m just saying I would kill for Mass Destruction in Smash)

It would be neat to see some Persona and SMT stuff in addition to Joker, and it would probably be music. Mass Destruction would be a good fit.

I'd be surprised if we only get Persona 5, given how ATLUS has shown itself to be very very very willing to license all sorts of Persona, MegaTen, and other IPs out to other companies for crossover events.

I imagine that if Nintendo wanted ATLUS content in Smash Bros, then Nintendo could probably pick and choose whatever ATLUS content they wanted. Here's hoping they do want to do that~!

So it seems like there would be a lot of general Persona content then.

So then there’s Joker’s stage, I was thinking a palace like Futaba’s Palace would be a good home-stage for him, either that or even the Casino from the beginning of the game would be just fine.

As for an Assist Trophy... It’d likely be Morgana since he is the mascot of P5.

I'm of the opinion that you can't have any stage other than the Velvet Room. It's a series staple, and given how it can change it's appearance and structure, it'd be easy to turn it into an arena.

That’s a great idea actually, additionally it could change between different Velvet Room layouts from across the series like Kalos Pokémon League.

Also I thought, the Assist doesn’t necessarily have to be Morgana, it could also be Aigis, a HUGELY iconic character from the series, or Jack Frost, an Atlus staple. Either way all of them would be interesting.

Yeah, I considered Aigis and Jack Frost personally, just to spread things out so the majority of Persona/SMT representation wouldn't all be from one game. Also, if it was different Velvet Room layouts, you could have the different residents appear in the backgrounds of the stages, too.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking, Elizabeth and Theodore could appear in the background from Persona 3, Margaret and Marie could appear in the background for Persona 4 (The limo could have it’s doors open for blast-zones), Caroline and Justine in the Persona 5 one, so on and so forth, covering the Persona series as a whole. It’s a perfect stage for the series.

I personally really want a general ATLUS travelling stage - including the streets Tokyo from SMTIV and SMTIVA, Destinyland from SMT1, the Idolsphere from TMS#FE, a labyrinth from Etrian Odyssey, etc., though I agree that the Velvet Room would be best for Persona in particular - maybe including five versions, if they want to use the P1/2 and PQ designs in addition to the iconic ones.

In terms of assist trophies, Morgana, Teddie, and Aigis would make sense as Persona mascots. Jack Frost/the Jack Bros would make sense as ATLUS mascots as well. I could also see Flynn, Nanashi, "Hero," Demifeind, etc. be chosen as ATs if mainline MegaTen wasn't being represented directly.

The Jack Bros would be amazing as an Assist Trophy, they could all go around on the battlefield dealing their own elemental attacks and it would be great fanservice for such a sought-after hidden gem on the Virtual Boy.

In addition for the other Assist Trophies from the Persona series, I know Morgana would make sense because he ties into Persona 5 and actually does a pretty good job as a mascot character... But I feel like Aigis wins out since she’s such an iconic character that I feel like Sakurai would go with her as the Assist Trophy, she’s a lot like the Zero or Alucard of the Persona franchise so it makes a ton of sense for her to be the Assist.

Actually I could see about role for Morgana working out better, he along with Ryuji and Ann could appear in Joker’s Final Smash for an All-Out Attack:

Joker is my dream smash character, but I don't think he has much of a chance to be included in the base game. If DLC happens, I really hope he's considered. I know Sakurai was very impressed with P5

Yeah, something really going in favor of Persona representation in general is that Sakurai is actually a huge fan of the series, he loves the games so I really think he could bring a Persona character to life in Smash if he tried and would love to see whoever it may be.

Yeah, if there is any argument for MegaTen/Persona being important to Nintendo history, it's their casually developing a game exclusive to the Virtual Boy. That cannot have been a good business move...

As for Morgana in an All-Out-Attack, recall that Riki is both a assist trophy and in Shulk's Final Smash. So, Morgana wouldn't be impossible as both, though I agree that Aigis is a better option.

That said, it should be noted that Sakurai seems to respect the series from a developer perspective moreso then be a fan of it from a gamer PoV. He did say that Persona 5 has the greatest UI of all video games (and I have a personal conspiracy theory that the new Final Smash cut-ins are directly inspired by P5); however, he also commented that he struggled to find the amount of time it would take to play it.

It’s a great game, I actually played it on emulator before and had a blast, but I agree that releasing it on Virtual Boy was not the smartest business move. It’s a shame too because it really is the textbook definition of a hidden gem.

Also since the whole thing about Morgana is that he can turn into a bus, I feel like it would just be kinda redundant with the inclusion of Kap’n as one, he could use his Persona and all but I feel like Aigis has so much more history and weight to her, she could use her Persona but as well as this she could use missiles, gattling guns, cannons, her rocket boosters, there’s a lot to work with her cybernetic body, even just for an Assist (I imagine it being similar to how she was in the Arena series and Blazblue Cross Tag Battle)

Yeah that’s true, Sakurai is a fan but that said it’s a long game so he struggles to find a dedicated time to play it. That being said he certainly has a lot of praise and respect for the series, pointing out a lot of the strong points that it has in his Famitsu article.

Yeah, it does look pretty fun from the limited gameplay I've seen of it - I certainly would purchase a remake if ATLUS was inclined to make one.

That's true - Zorro definitely isn't as iconic of a Persona as Athena is, and the bus gimmick is taken. Aigis does also have a giant arsenal of options for moves too, so she'd make a lot of sense.

True, he does seem to know a lot about it in spite of claiming to not have played much of it. It should also be noted that the respect is likely mutual, given how there is a SMT Devil Survivor character named after him and, in the English version at least, Futaba casually shout-outs Smash Brothers in one of the least subtle references she makes in Persona 5.

Okay, another thought about a possible assist trophy: If we wanted to represent the Persona series mechanically, then it'd make the most sense for an assist trophy to be someone who assists you in the Persona series (i.e., the navigator).

So, my idea is that Futaba could appear as an assist trophy. She appears briefly on the stage in her Phantom Thief outfit while summoned, before leaving and turning background inside the Necronomicon, giving the other players time to prepare. She then uses Position Hack to make it so all players expect the one who summoned her are buried, or, if no floor is below them, sent plummeting off-stage (as Abra has the teleportation gimmick taken already).

Not saying that it is likely to happen even if we were to get a MegaTen assist, given how most assist trophies are just lesser-known protagonists and not assistive characters, but I thought the idea was fun enough to share.

Also I mentioned this on Twitter, but the guns Joker uses don’t really go against him because the guns that he uses in the game aren’t realistic and are heavily exaggerated compared to real guns. I feel Joker is a reasonable contender for DLC since he’s from the most popular Persona game, he has a lot of moveset potential to draw from, and on top of that he just appeared on a Nintendo console as well, so with all that taken into account him as DLC wouldn’t surprise me too much.

Snake proves that guns are fine anyway, so it definitely shouldn't be an issue!

This is purely prospective, but I imagine the game will be rated T anyway. With Bayonetta being on the base roster as well as Snake returning, not to mention the outright brutality of some of the Final Smashes we've seen, I think they might be a little more flexible with the contents of the game and allow things like guns. Could be wrong though.

Have to say that Joker is probably my second most wanted character at this moment. It may not be the most likely pick but I'm definitely supporting his inclusion.

So what do you guys think the series’ symbol for the Persona series would be?

I’m personally thinking it would be the Velvet Room logo since it’s one of the most recurring areas in the series, it fits for the series symbol very well thematically.

The Velvet Room logo does seem the most fitting. I can't think of what other symbol there would be. Maybe the Take your Heart (you know, the one with the hat) logo, but I think the Velvet Room one would work better.

They could opt for the Blue Butterfly that represents Philemon (who had a major role in the first two (technically three) games)
It's been a constant presence in the franchise since P3.

Yeah... I don’t think it would be the Phantom Theives logo.

While I think the character would be Joker since P5 is the most popular game in the series, I think the symbol would try to represent the series as a whole rather than just one entry, Final Fantasy is a good example, the symbol could have easily just been the meteor from the logo but they opted to go with FF instead which better reflects the overall series instead of just being tied to 7 (Even if the way they did it was really lazy)

I speculate in the opposite direction of the Theives' hat and make it more generic, with the series symbol just being Jack Frost's face. It's basic and not super Persona-y, but I don't know if they'd bother with the nuance of MegaTen/Persona being different and its also the logo of ATLUS, which would work out in the same way that the old Metal Gear logo did.

I agree that it wouldn't be the Phantom Thieves logo. That seems too restricting, no series logo as far as I know seems to only represent one game in said series.

Joker would be looking so cool.

Persona's heavy PlayStation affiliation (much more extreme than modern Final Fantasy) and his relative youth in the scene though really hamper his chances.

Nevertheless, I'm playing through Persona 5 now (on the fifth palace) and have loved Joker since before I got it. Here's hoping!

If Persona had a series logo, I would think it would be the butterfly, Philemon, as he's technically appeared in every game in the series

(although there's debate if the butterfly in the beginning is either Philemon or P5 SPOILER).

So how about songs, the Persona series is well-known for it’s catchy and upbeat soundtracks, which I think would fit perfectly into Smash.

Here are some songs I think could be in:

Poem for Everyone’s Souls (Velvet Room Theme)
Snow Queen (Persona 1)
Maya’s Theme (Persona 2: Innocent Sin)
Mass Destruction/Burn My Dread (Atlus Kitajoh remix) (Persona 3)
When the Moon’s Reaching Out Stars (Persona 3)
A Way if Life (Persona 3)
Pursuing My True Self (Persona 4)
Reach Out To The Truth (Persona 4)
I’ll Face Myself (Persona 4)
Shadow World (Persona 4 Golden)
Time To Make History (Persona 4 Golden)
Break Out Of... (Persona 4 Arena Ultimax)
Maze of Life (Persona Q)
Light the Fire Up in the Night (Persona Q)
Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There (Persona 5)
Life Will Change (Persona 5)
Beneath the Mask (Persona 5)
Last Surprise (Persona 5)
The Whims of Fate (Persona 5)
Rivers in the Desert (Persona 5)
Our Moment (Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight)
Groovy (Persona 5 Dancing in Starlight)
Road Less Taken (Persona Q2)
