Izaw: The Art of Samus

Cosplay By Jenni Källberg

Samus, a character currently considered only six spots away from the bottom of the official tier list, may have more tricks up her sleeves (or suit) than most expect. Swedish player Izaw has been creating in-depth tutorial videos for characters for quite some time and has sat down to tackle the famous bounty hunter. The video is voiced by Samus herself and makes for an incredible watch. Go learn The Art of Samus!

Learned something new? Izaw is also looking for suggestions on which characters should be covered next. For readers with ideas, sound off in the comments below, and check out some of the other videos in this series like The Art of Cloud and The Art of Falco. For more action with Samus, check out our interview with Jonny Westside: The Samus That Shook ESAM Saga.

the voiceover would have felt a little more in-character if "Samus" didn't use smash lingo... but that's just me nitpicking...

I watched it a few days ago. I didn't realize how good up airs are. Also found some more reasons to use the down air in the video. I'll have to practice with Samus a bit more, been too busy with other characters.

I hope he keeps up the awesome work. It is immensely helpful.

So, Art of Marth?
Why can I only like that once? :(

Great stuff here. Maybe with this, people can finally start to see some of the full potential of Samus, rather than seeing a certain cancerous video or For Glory stereotyping and stop looking. Samus really does have some of the most highly damaging combos in the game. This video has been put together so well, and that Samus voicing it was a fantastic idea. This was better than porn.

Seriously awesome stuff by Izaw once again! Love the Samus voice over and the tutorial is really well made...as someone who is trying to get better with Samus myself, I definitely found this guide very useful...

If Izaw does an Art of ZSS, then that's all my top 4 characters that he's covered...thing about ZSS there's not much I don't already know since there's already a ****ton of tutorials for her, its just a matter of execution...

I know down throw into up air into up air then up special (up-special is counterable/escapable tho) gets about 30 somethin percent. At least in Sm4sh.

It was great to watch this develop over the many months. And more and more Samus meta is being covered every week. I felt bad for Izaw because the closer he would get to completion, more stuff would be discovered. Thanks again @Izaw for doing this guide. I don't know who convinced you to do Samus, but I think all will benefit from your hard work. I know I will. I'm just sorry it took as long as it did, nevertheless this is one of the highest quality smash 4 guides ever! Thanks a ton.

This is brilliant work. I used to play Samus for a relatively short while. I wasn't too terrible (which is to say, at least I was clearly enough above the average For Glory level), but 'good' would be an overstatement, probably. She's a ton of fun to play though and I really feel she has potential, despite all the strange issues and blind spots from which she suffers. This video guide does an outstanding job of displaying Samus's many qualities, while adressing a number of her weaknesses at the same time. Samus is clearly not easy to play and I think she's better than her reputation suggests. I really think she'll turn out much better in the future than she's believed to be right now, as players uncover all the hidden tech and perfect the execution of her combo's and spacing.

She's still a character you're gonna have to put work a lot with to take a stock. Meanwhile, a good chunk of the roster can take stocks in an easier manner.
True... She's pretty technical when it comes to combos and kills.

Depending on character and % it's usually ~38% for the full string.
Though, that last move is easier to dodge, usually with a jump or a counter.

Anything in the low range of % it's pretty easy to get OR if they Smash DI away you can follow with Bairs and even a Reverse CS. Or Fair if they slip to far forward.

Anything high % after you land the 1st or 2nd UAir it's way better to bait an Air Dodge for UpB or Charge Shot. Mind games haha.

It's all about the %. Samus doesn't have anything that's really simple and guaranteed you have a very tight window.

True, especially when it's with crazy stuff like bomb tactics..

Found a bunch of combos for Samus (as of 2k08)
Grab, pummel, pummel, up throw= 10-12%
Zair, grab, pummel, pummel, up throw=14-19%
FF U-air, Up+B= 11-16%
U air Fast-Falled -> UpB
D air -> UpB
at 0 % ONLY Charge shot -> running grab -> pummel->Pummel-> Up Throw
Running attack to UpB
F air if the last hit doesn't connect -> UpB
missile cancel -> Dash attack -> Up B
Dair->d-tilt at mid %s, otherwise they don't have enough hitstun
Dair-> charge beam (have them bounce off the ground)
Short hop super missile -> running short hop reverse bair. 17% - 21%
Short hop super missile -> Zair
Fast fall Dair -> Bair
Non-sweet spot Zair -> Grab -> Pummel -> Any Throw (preferably up or down) -> Up B
Fast-fall up-air -> up-tilt -> fast-fall up-air -> forward-air 0-53%
Fast-fall up-air -> jab-cancelled jab -> down-tilt 0-28%
Homing missile->dtilt
Dash Attack->Jab->dtilt/smash
Fully Charged Blast -> Dash Attack -> UpB
fulljump uair-> homing missile
fulljump uair->->(possiby jump to uair)->ff? fair or uair->screw attack
ff shorthop uair->screwattack
dash attack->screw attack
jab->dtilt
from the ledge-> ledgehop fair or uair->screw attack (especially effective on yoshi's)
shorthop zair->shorthop zair immediately->fulljump double zair (lame, but it works sometimes lol)
dair->chargeshot or jab to dtilt in the 40% "bounce" range
homing missile->dtilt (or jab to dtilt depending on how airborne the enemy is)
sometimes this works :/ dthrow->fully charged charge shot->dash attack (take advantage of the stun)->uthrow or fthrow
0% hm cancel ->charge shot ->dash attack -> upb = 50%+
0% hm cancel ->charge shot ->dash grab->pummel ->dthrow->jump to force air dodge->bair
30%+ nair->fastfall->ftilit
lower percents. Pointblank zair->charge shot
lower percents. Pointblank zair->jab->downtilit
uair-uair-bair medium %
and dair - upb ofc
smash missile and charge in for an dair is pretty safe too
Thank you Xyro77

Pretty good video overall. A couple of things I'd like to point out though:

- Down smash is good for more than just sending opponents out at a low angle near the edge. It's reasonably fast and because it hits on both sides one after the other, it's great for catching rolls
- Down air can actually be teched on the stage, which the video doesn't mention, so it's not a reliable combo starter in that sense. A lot of the time the opponent will accidentally tech it by being slightly too late with their shield.

Good video though, very informative for anyone that might want to pick up our favourite bounty hunter.

The voice over makes it hurt to watch. Also, a lot of what he (well, she) says is pretty obvious stuff, isn't it?

If you picked her up without the guide you'd automatically know she should SHAD instead of roll, You can SH off a charge w.o the shield popping up? Missiles/Weak CS cause a jab lock and can abuse them on platforms? Jab1 leads to Bair at high %?

Point being it helps people expand what they know and gives you a good focus on what to look for as Samus. The ending especially shows you the plethora of options she has. Her combo game isn't boring at all, she just has a tight window haha.

l don't care anymore, l'm maining Samus. Wasn't good at ZSS anyhow.

This video kinda reminded me about how Ganon also has options for almost anything and the only problems were keeping opponents out and choosing the right options once the opponents forced into the appropriate scenarios, except Samus has a much more noticeable and difficult combo game, which honestly turns me off from her the most. But that's me looking for some wins without much practice lol.

Always fun to play, but l can't see myself playing her seriously and constantly applying all of this, as interesting as she seems. Maybe if l memorize the video???

Excellent work anyway.

Yeah, I guess that does make sense.

Though the video is still a little cringe worth. Might be the voice IMO.

I have to agree, the only reason why I don't main either samus is for the combos and technicality. They are pretty weird playing, but powerful in the right hands.
